Funny how a lot of us here use a very similar type of stat to back up our ideas that we are on the way up, and so many say we are deluded fools for getting ahead of ourselves.

If as the article says the Tiges are using it for -
"Once we got used to the game plan and started being competitive, our aim was to be a top eight team for the rest of the year so we have something to build on for the year after.
"It's all about building a winning culture for the rest of the year."
- then you can throw the tanking rubbish right out the window.

No Hawks never tanked , they beat us in the 2nd last round of 2004 in the battle for the spoon and ended up with picks 2 & 5 and we got picks 1 & 4. We all know how that worked out.

Carlton are the original proto type of tanking your arse off to win a flag. If it works for them look out.

West Coast are the second team to adopt such tactics and have already pulled the trigger on this season this week. They are a disgrace.

Melbourne are the 3rd team to adopt the tactic and look be doing a perfect job of developing their golden tankers list , except they screwed up with Jack Watts.

I hope all three clubs burn in hell. Andrew Demetri is a disgrace for letting these 3 clubs get away with such tactics and all 3 clubs are morally bank rupt pieces of sh$t.

Ladder over 5 games is not representative of where teams are at.
Pies are a long way better than we are at.
A bunch of teams that are "below" us, that are better ATM.

Lets see whats that ladder like after a few more rounds with Freo and the Pies.

Theres no doubt we've improved, but get a grip on reality, we're not top 8 material.

Seems you need to back and re-read the article.

I can see where El Tigre is coming from. Who have we beaten that is any good? The Lions have won one from their last 9 and will most likely lose 3/4 of their next 4. Port have been woeful and were coming off Darwin.

We will most likely win some games in the second half of the season that in the first half, where sides think they could make the 8, would not let slip. West Coast were aiming top 8 and now who knows.

I am fully behind Dimma going for wins but I also want to see the Goo have a good run in the ones and maybe even Posty. Although I think he needs another preseason to get accustomed to his body. I love the fact that Dimma the the footy department are aiming to pump 500 games into the 22 and under blokes as quickly as possible. For me - this and learning the game plan takes preference over winning a few games.

In terms of the Hawks. They may not have tanked but they made a conscious effort to bottom out and rightly so. They traded out all the experience they could and let guys like Holland play in the twos. Sure there was no Paul Johnson at full back but they weren't hell bent on picking/and retaining a side that could win games. what did we do? we drafted mark graham. lol

What are you referring to? I understand that Dimma said about being a top 8 team for the rest of the year, not just now at this particular point in time.
But we are in the 8 at this point in time, and he obviously dosnt want to drop out by the seasons end. He would be aiming for at least top six i would assume.

yep its quite funny really. so that ladder is really telling us we have beaten pa, wce, and bris, who have won just one game between them since rnd 8.
surely we would expect enough improvement as we go to get over these injury ravaged and atm deplorable teams.
we have not beaten a side outside the bottom 4 since rnd 8 it rings true for the entire season.

we play syd who imo wont make the 8, freo ,who have to much to play for, nm who are middle of the road, collingwood top4, adelaide who are struggling melbourne who were always going to finish well outside the 8 carlton who will probably have a top 4 spot on the line, stkilda, and port.

sheesh for those who are so obsessed with winning atm we could maybe end up winning 8 games and not win a game against a decent team. we have been there before.
we are in melb shoes people we are going to struggle next yr improve yes hopefully but we will struggle.
i dont get this fixation and need and impatience to win games when quite clearly winning atm is a secondary consideration to development structures and processes.
people keep kidding themselves that winning games will build momentum for next yr what codswallop we have seen time and time again that winning games this season has little to do with the next it only becomes important when you have the cattle in your system that will enable you to challenge. we still need to give ourselves the best chance possible at the best kids available.

Well that's just brilliant, now if only we can convince the rest of the league to scrap the first 8 rounds...

Excellent idea to keep the season interesting and have something to "play for"..however it does have its flaws...

Rounds 1-9 most teams would be going at full tilt, where as now there are a few teams who are putting the cue in the rack, especially WCE, who I am starting to become very suspicious of as the tankers of 2010. bizarre selections, bizarre tactics and reluctance to change certain players performing poorly, but i digress...

Tiges for the top 4!

Just worked out that since round 12 (inclusive) we are sitting 2nd on the ladder, with the Bulldogs sitting on top.

The season obviously started then....

Seems like some people are missing the point.
Some one gets it :)

NEWS FLASH everyone-- its a make believe ladder set up by Dimma from the moment he thought the team had clicked into gear.

Gus summed it up perfectly
"After the Hawthorn game in Round 8, (coach Damien Hardwick) pretty much said our season starts now," Graham said.
"We've put up a ladder every week from Round 8 to show where we sit, so we can see how we are travelling compared to the rest of the competition.
"Once we got used to the game plan and started being competitive, our aim was to be a top eight team for the rest of the year so we have something to build on for the year after.
"It's all about building a winning culture for the rest of the year."

Its all in the article in black and white, yet everyone is trying to put some sinister negative twist on it. As the article said, even Collingwood do a similar thing.

I think it's fair to say that Hardwick is very aware that we have had a very soft first 5 rounds on his new imaginery fixture and although we are in the top 8 on said ladder he would expect us to have won those games against piss poor sides like Port , Eagles and The Lions.

This week will be a challenge and if we win it we could be knocking on the imaginery door of the imaginery top 4 . Imagine if we achieved such a feat.

Very good idea but I would of prefered if they had of kept the theory in house. Now some of the real top 4 for teams will get real fired up on us because we are imaginery finalist.
