Tigers to make the ball their object

Teams risk being made to look stupid if they are excessively aggressive against St Kilda’s young side, according to Tigers football manager Greg Hutchison.
In the wake of a physical clash between the Saints and Essendon last weekend – which resulted in a 34 point victory to St Kilda – Richmond, who meet the reigning Wizard Home Loans Cup premiers on Monday, will concentrate on the footy rather than intimidation.
“They’ll make you look stupid if you try and put too much physical pressure on them,” Hutchison told Sportal on Friday.
“There’s no point smashing blokes or whacking blokes when the ball’s not around. When it’s there to be won you’ve got to be pretty hard at it then and that’s the only time you can really test people. And the Saints have stood up really well”
“There’ve been a few clubs that have tried, but I think they’ve got enough blokes that stand up. They’ve got some strong players and they put their heads over the ball and it’s going to be a good contest for our blokes this week to make sure we put our heads over the ball.”
“You put them under pressure whenever you can, but I don’t think there’s any great need to go outside the realms of what you’d normally do in a game of footy to try and put them off. You’ve just got to try and get the ball more than them.”
Hutchison said the Tigers viewed Monday’s game as an opportunity for redemption following their lame performance against Melbourne in round two.
The side’s delivery into attack has been a focus during the week, an area where the Tigers were found wanting last Friday.
“In the game against Melbourne our blokes went away from the (preferred) style of play and they sort of went sideways and got a lot of uncontested possessions and uncontested marks. That looks good for them stats-wise, but it didn’t equate to inside-50s.”
Hutchison said All-Australian defender Darren Gaspar would take time to return to his best form after requiring a knee construction last year.
Gaspar appeared out of sorts against the Demons last week, and is likely to be pitted against the Saint’s powerhouse Fraser Gehrig this week.
“He’d be disappointed in the way he played (last week),” Hutchison said.
“But mentally it’s pretty hard to get back from a knee reconstruction and he’s been really good the way he’s gone about it. You see blokes who take 12 months to get back properly and he’s played two or three games since he’s done it.”
“I’m sure in about ten or 12 games time he’ll be a lot better than what he is at the moment.”
God forbid we try and do that!
