With prizemoney of 1 million on offer if a club wins in both day and night premierships do the cats go all out for the preseason cup in the hope they can go back to back in day premierships? A win in both would I think be worth 1mill for both cups in one year and 1 mill for day premiership. This is serious money.

Or do we lay off and acknowledge our late start to preseason work and build gradually to the day finals a la Sydney?

i think because we went all the way into september this year and started pre season late if he go all the way in pre season cup and then in the home and away its only really going to start wearing on their bodies by round 20/21 etc. Remember this year when people were debating resting mooney, jimmy gaz ottens chappy etc for the finals? I don't like the idea of this and would like to think we take the freshest route to the finals in 08.

However if we go ok in the preseason cup and make it through the first couple of rounds i think the boys should really give it all they've got. It's good experience for the youngins and won't really do any damage.

I think with the late start, they'll schedule the pre-season to run as best it can to get the players right for the season proper. I don't think the preseason cup will factor much into considerations. Throw the kids in I say.

I don't think you aim for the pre-season cup, but you do give it a crack. I mean you try a few young guys and maybe experiment with players in different positions but once you are on the field you give it 100%. If that means Gaz and Bartel only play 75% of games to keep them fresh and Varcoe/Prismall get more time in the center so be it.

Maybe if we won the first two mtches, we'd give it a go. But considering there wasn't a match in last season's preseason where the team that had finished higher on the ladder the previous season were ahead come the full-time siren (although I stand to be corrected), then I don't really fancy our chances.

Exactly.... Unleash the younger players and test them. Rest the key players (ie. Scarlett, Ottens, Mooney) and replace them with the younger guys to give them an oppotunity to crack into the ones in the proper season.

Looking forward to see how Hawkins, Djekurra, Varcoe, West and Gamble go after another pre-season.

To me it's a combination. For sure try out some younger guys and give them game time, but at the same time the senior players need match hardening before round 1. Playing the preseason cup every week is better than practise matches in the bush.

As was mentioned above, once they're on the field try to win. Look at 2007 to see what a good habit winning is. I see no reason why you wouldn't wish to continue.

Plus $200,000 in prizemoney is better than nothing.

I wand to see Hawkins, West, Davenport, Varcoe, Dejerkurra and Prismall get a lot of game time. Other than that I hope we play our best 22 with the odd cameo from first year players.

Play the youth, but also play to win. Ie don't select players who are to raw/ haven't earnt it.

Its easier to play on AFL Quality grounds then it is to travel 4 hours to nanagoon and play on there pothole infested paddocks.

You'd think that's what they'd do.

Perhaps if they progress to the later stages, we'll throw in some of the senior boys and have a crack at it - but given how far we'll be behind most other clubs in terms of a pre-season, it may not come to that. Would be nice to win it and have the chance at the extra prize money, although I'd say the club would not be as desperate for it as some others might be.

nope....

give blokes like hawkins, djerkura, gamble, varcoe, donahue, davenport, lonergan etc. a bit of game time.
Change to ..............a lot of game time. Then add West and D johnson who need a chance to win a place in the ones and Blake and Byrnes who need game time to cement a place and Bedford.
Then Ottens Milburn Scarlett Harley Mooney ( the older players ) and Johnson S. ( who needs management) and any other established players who are not quite fit can be given just the right amount of match time to be ready round one. However beware another romp in a tropical rainstorm which is our usual lot. This sort of contest needs careful thought.

We are as likely even with the youth strategy most supporters have gone for in this thread to win the preseason cup in 2008 as anyone else.
Then a hard slog to another day premiership would bring a huge bonus.

Its dreamtime ..................... sorry about that.

Geelong should and will try to win every game they compete in.
The team that takes the field will be determined by injuries, fitness levels and the need to put fringe and up and coming players under the heat of Senior football.
There will also be a need to test new strategies and player versatility's.
The club, coaches and players will have the 2008 premiership as their No. 1 priority but talent, pride and the hunger for success will ensure that we have a red hot go at the NAB cup.

I dont have a problem with the cats going all out to win the NAB cup but i do believe youth is the way to go in a competition such as this, the club know what they're doing, i'm sure they'll make the right move.

Another point, why do the AFL dangle so much money in front of the winner of a pre season competition and dont reward minor premiers of the home and away season. To me seeing Carlton have the option of winning a mil and Geelong getting bugger all for finishing top seems out of whack!!

Get the younger guys and fringe players in there. Also pick a team for the conditions. If we had to play in Darwin again in conditions like we did in the Port game up there last year I would be disappointed if we risked some of the bigger blokes like Ottens and Moons.

It's really not about the result in the NAB it's about the showing, sticking to game plan and trialing of different positions etc.

yeh when i said etc i meant all those types of players.

IMO every player on the list should get a game in the nab cup.

same as last year.

play some youngsters and rotate the regulars.

If we make it through some rounds then work out if want to have a go at it or not.
