So you base that on the one chance he had to use it today in the last quarter and chose not to. Haven't seen him use it every other week he's played and hit targets ranging from 15-40 meters away?
Have watched him for more then one week, there was a time in the 1st and 2nd quarters when he did not use his left. Look Marley only uses his left side but is still a very good AFL player. When you are fighting it out for a spot in the AFL side all these little things hurt you.

Having not been able to see the match I have to agree on principle!!

What I also find odd is that anyone cares about a players skill on his non-preferred at AFL level in 2014? The need to be skilled on either foot is straight out of the 80's! Players as good in traffic as Broomhead don't need a left foot for anything other than balance.

Ablett is probably the best opposite foot kick in the league (yes better than Mitchell) and you very rarely see him use it. He is always good enough to get onto his natural leg.

By the sounds of things Broomhead got stuck on the wrong side and had to squeeze out an ineffective kick. Instead of encouraging him to improve on and use his non-preferred and maybe have a 50-60% KE I'd much prefer to challenge him to take the game on and get onto his right foot which goes at 70%+ and is far more damaging.

At the end of the day to think that being one side dominant is holding him back from team selection is garbage, IMO!

Correct. The opposite boot is a get out of jail card. Most coaches will now encourage players to get back on the preferred side- especially now that there is so much run, handball and space to find your balance. Obviously being able to use both sides is a luxury, but not necessarily as important if you have speed, agility and balance

I think speed, agility, and balance are the luxury items here - non-preferred kicking skills should be pretty mandatory. If you can't kick both feet then either you cut the side of the contest you run to down, or you need to have explosive speed AND space...

If you think that having balance and agility means you don't need a wrong foot, just have a quick count of the number of times Pendles uses his right foot in games - no one has more balance and agility than him, yet he uses his non-preferred reasonably regularly.

Okay, well how about we agree that for players with Ablett's explosion, agility, and power don't need an opposite side, but players that don't have Ablett's speed, agility, and power probably do?

I can live with that if you can...

True, but that is because he is balanced on both sides. He has so much time and space that he could still use his left if he wanted too. Don't get me wrong, all footballers should have above average kicking skills on both feet, but kicking with both feet would would be seen as an advantage but not essential compared to the player who can find the footy more often and still have one good leg.

Not for mine. There isn't really any circumstance that I'd agree that ability on the non-preferred foot is required at AFL level. Williams, Kennedy and Seedsman are all examples of developing players that rarely, if ever, use their non-preferred foot.

I could also name a shit tonne of players that lack Broomhead's ability in traffic that get by without a non-preferred foot.

The other aspect is I'm pretty sold on Broomhead and will back him in to take the game on and display his skill rather than settle for the get out kick.

That's not to say there's anything wrong with your stance I just find it irrelevant for AFL footballers these days :thumbsu:

I find it amazing how many blokes on AFL lists don't use their opposite side. It's something that should be drilled in at a young age.

You don't see players use their opposite foot much any more because they are drilled to handball until they can give it off to a teammate running in a straight line eliminating the need.

Apparently he was ordinary in the VFL last weekend, still hasn't strung together the kind of games to demand a debut

Wet crappy weather meant there were no real standouts. Hes been good for a few weeks before that and we have the dogs (before having a tough team the following week). We have looked a little flat at times since before our bye.....wouldnt mind rotaing the likes of broomy and Kennedy through

Kennedy was the stand out, I think he deserves a game more

7. Ben Kennedy
Statistics: 24 kicks, 3 marks, 6 handballs, 30 disposals, 14 clearances, 9 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s, 6 tacklesCraig McRae says: Back to his AFL standard type of football at this level. He was clearly one of our best players. His 24 kicks, 30 disposals, 21 contested possessions and 14 clearances are an example of him at his best, winning the ball in close. He was a really good performer for us. In those conditions it was all about effort and we needed players to play their role. He was the leader of that.

Get him in he's ready to explode

So does that mean put Tim in for one week but then sorry mate you won't be good enough to play against the big boys next week so trot off back to the VFL?
If he's good enough to play against "the dogs" he's good enough to play against the "tough team" the following week.

Broomy & Kennedy would have opportunities to make it very very difficult to send them back to the VFL if they play very well.
Neither can do this if they are the sub though. Having said all that, I agree with you. Not a fan of giving kids just one taste of the big time & then sending them back to the 2nd's
