Can Eagles afford Kelly with Gaff now staying.

Arent they also after either Tom Hickey or Jordan Roughead?

If they get Kelly and one of those 2 ruckmen, they are in a good position keeping Gaff as well.
Yeah, for 2019 at least Kelly must be paid draftee wages. If not this year then LeCras will retire next. That frees up some space, plus Mackenzie has retired. Kennedy and Hurn are 31, these guy won't be around forever. Plus I don't think Naitanui will get another $800k+ deal.

Lycett was (how?) a RFA, so on a decent wicket. Roughead or Hickey would not be. Lobb might be, but I'm not sure if we can get him anyway.

The only issue in signing Kelly is trade currency. I suspect Geelong FC will be reasonable even if many of their fans are silly.

Dont forget Mclovin is on big coin from next year too.
You would assume they are out of the race for Kelly and Lobb now.

This is a good point. The Weagles should have no issue paying Kelly's relative cheap 120k rookie contract next year but with Gaff now staying the size of any contract beyond 2019 would be considerably more modest, less pie to go around, than it would be if he stayed at Geelong. I wonder how Kelly will feel being lowballed by the Weagles after moving to Perth on the cheap.

Geelong have a reportedly tight salary cap and just signed Dahlhaus for $500k a year. Happens all the time.

Just take out the 'or' and it's fair.

Pick 19 + Brander (pick 13 form 2017) + 2019 first round pick. It's the best we can do unless we can convince McGovern, Yeo and Shuey to join the Cats as sweeteners.
Appreciate the good will gesture but you don't need to throw in McGovern and Shuey.

With Hickey or Roughhead coming in i see it at Pick 38.
If that happens a promising youngster will be a sacrificial lamb i think.
You talking diluted pick compo?

Surely we'd just do a nothing trade for Hickey or Roughead if that was the case. Pick 75 or something. Make no difference to their clubs if they are on low money deals.

A pick after the last first round pick is a second round pick. Thus it is a second round pick. There are only 18 picks in the first round. Theoretically one for each club.
They call them end of first round compensation picks. That's the official language.

Weirdly semantic point to argue over.

Le cra will retire end of 2019. Good chance Kennedy will as well.

Naitanui's next contract will be much less after two recaps unfortunately.

Hurn is 31.

Kelly on $500k pa isn't a problem in 2020. No problem at all.

It is classed as a first round pick. The first round extends beyond 18 selections if there are band 1 or 2 compo picks.

Pick 19 last year (Motlop compo, traded to Gold Coast) was a first round pick.

They can class it whatever they want. Its just semantics. A round is one pick for each club. Thats always what it was before free agency came in.

The difference in using pick 19 or 20 as a first or second round pick is zero, but if you trade them they count differently in the '4 picks in 2 years' rule.

Is Roughead worth downgrading 20 to 39? No, he isn’t. So we wouldn’t do it.

Hickey is contracted.

We will have 20, 22 and our 2019 first. It’s almost as if you don’t want this to be true.

Can you please provide details as to what the club have said about Kelly that makes you want them to shut up?

The unrest and trade request had come from Kelly and his agent. Your coach, list manager and CEO have made bold statements and to this effect I think our club has been respectfully silent.

For all the crap on the board and the emotional carry on, the clubs have been talking privately for over a month and will either get a deal done that is fair or delay it a year and start again with Cats hoping 2019 is a better year at home front. I’d expect if he stays that your club will commit to making it work next year and hope for a change of heart and he stays longer.

20 isn't a given yet. Plenty to play out before then...
Relax you guys have plenty of ammo you haven't even thought of.
First, best you guys find that extra 800k-900k that Gaff will need... very unexpected i must say. Thought he was gone.

We don't need to find an extra $900k for Gaff, he is already on our list and was already highly paid.

Either find another $2-300k for him or we have $6-700k open up.

No.

Again people need to stop and think about the situation not as a club supporter.

Why should anyone work for an organisation that is the wrong fit as opposed to the best fit?

So that the Cats get a better draft pick? Like really?

Sorry but that not how life works.

Why should the Kelly's move and work for a club they don't want to?

So Cats supporters are happy! So Geelong gets a pick 5 spots better in the draft? Five spots! Like really?

This isn' life or death it' football and entertainment.
A 'contracted' Kelly is supposedly going 'home' for 'family' reasons.

Extra cash? We had an offer on the table all year. And an offer for lycett. I guess with gaff staying we can’t afford lobb any more, as Kelly will be the priority.
