It is speculation, but every one of the 41K Freo Membership followed some VFL team (and some still do).

A lot still have/had their VFL team as their primary allegance while the Kiddies follow Freo.

I've met every breed of VFL supporter (with Freo memberships) at the footy.
I don't doubt that that is the case mate, but you don't have the complicating factor of the Tassie, North, South, Northwest divide. Once the novelty wore off people would only travel when their team was playing.

Essendon verses Carlton at North Hobart oval ..i was there .
St Kilda V Carlton at Burnie as well ..i was there.
don't bother going to the other games because my side isn't playing ..i'm pretty typical of your average Tassie footy supporter .
I was going to goto the game, at North Hobart, my dad worked at The Mercury at the time and he asked if I wanted to go, I only thought North Melbourne because he made a mention of them, maybe they were going to play no idea, cannot remember.

But I did have a feeling Essendon played, I am the same as you, though Collingwood has played down here at my knowledge, I thought I heard of a practice match once in Devonport between Collingwood and Carlton back in about 1999 I am not sure if that actually ever took place.

I don't think it would have been bad if the teams had a sponsor that would drive them down, I remember in 2003 the NTFL weren't too happy about the amount of money it cost to bring the players down to play the North/South game, as the crowd wasn't great that year (I was there and it was disappointing, the game was over at half time the SFL were out gunned.) I think it cost them about $2,000 to come down.

I think some teams back in the TFL days would go up the night before and stay in a hotel which you could imagine with the league not getting the big crowds it was in the 1980s and such it was a lot to pay out.

Glenorchy had their own supporter bus in 1999, which was a good idea, and before that there was a train that had New Norfolks team and supporters on it though the supporters of the Eagles were annoyed they had to stay until the team got done with their after game stuff (not the usual after game talks and stuff the players stayed around and were drinking I think we (Glenorchy) lost that day, we won the ressies easily..but I thought that was a god idea at the time you paid your fare on the train and into the ground at the same time.

I think the Ulverstone situation in the old state league pretty much sums up the problems an AFL team would face in tassie.

I was a North Hobart man so I remember the ground with fondness and the battles with the Pies. It didn't seem small when I was young:D
The old days of the Magpies/Demons rivalry, I remember Byron Howard breaking all Magpie supporters hearts when Kim Excell lead us to the finals one year, we beat Burnie at North Hobart and went onto the play the Demons, damn him! I also remember a game it was a Sunday one of the first Sunday games, Glenorchy played North at KGV Maple kicked 7 goals, and North thumped us hard.

I used to stand behind the goals as a kid, and took a Collingwood flag when I was younger, no one ever made any comment at the fact it wasn't a Glenorchy flag, it was near enough..black and white..and had a Magpie on it.

I remember the Demons had a couple of small flags there once haven't seen them since. It was around the time Michael Maple went to Glenorchy so it would've been 1998, I remember talking to Michael before the game, great bloke, tough as nails on the field.

Ive been to every Premiership Seaosn game at Aurora Stadium (exception Hawks vs Freo 2001) and none have involved Collingwood! A good friend of mine, you may know him (and his allegiances  ), has been to quite a few with me ;)

So the AFL who used to look after The state of origin series has used the ground wouldn't take much for the current adminstration to do the same.

Think next time blues man.
When State of Origin was around, they were still playing at Whitten Oval, and Victoria Park... Grounds must be of an outstanding standard these days, so the cricket oval (park in the city and walk over!) and the bog hole arent gonna cut it!

If it makes you feel any better I was around when we couldn't win a thing before the statewide league:D . The new league gave us back the glory days. I think our last win before that was against sandy bay years before:eek:

Unlikely mate. It is not just North versus South in Tassie you have to throw in the NorthWest as well. These regions despise eachother. That is part of the reason the statewide football competition went under.
.
Its not Civil War down here!

And is this a thing with the older generation, cause I aint feeling no hate between the regions...?

Gravel rash:D I have had the misfortune to play there:D
:D You poor bastard I have heard some stories about players that played there, and their scars from the oval. I don't thinl the AFL would like that oval much, I remember when Before The Game on Seven was there some guy was heckling Dermott saying he'd be afraid to play on that ground. :D

Luckily those were the days when you could have a drink during the breaks. Helped dull the pain and calmed the fear of going to ground. I think I still carry pieces of Queenstown around with me now..just so I can't forget. I may have post traumatic stress:D

Night all:) It is nice thought, but there are so many reasons why it couldn't work unless things change over the next decade or so.

I mean how can the regions work together if you have one of the newspapers showing people how to rig an on-line poll because they believed the other candidates from the other regions were playing dirty just to get their landmark into an Australian version of monopoly:D. Let alone decide where the games will be played;)

Tasmania could support an AFL team, both financially and on the field. The thing is Tasmania will never get an AFL team, lets face it, New Zealand and Singapore will have a team in the Australian Football League before Tasmania ever does.

Tasmania should just jump on the A-League bandwagon. Getting crowds of around 7,000+ to A-League practice matches at York Park is pretty impressive considering 3 or 4 of the teams in the A-League get less or only slightly more to their regular season matches. This won't happen though, since it's Tasmania, as we've seen New Zealand get a side in the Australia Soccer League before Tasmania.

What about the Australian Basketball League? I won't even bother we all know New Zealand and Singapore have sides while Tasmania is, yep, not involved.

I find it ammusing that the only side Tasmania can boast is a cricket team. What's wrong with Australian cricket, get with it, New Zealand and Singapore should have sides, not Tasmania, what a fass. Tasmania can't even support a team, they don't have a big enough population to produce competitive players, they are a blight on the competition and are bringing it down.

Tasmanians should just get with the picture, you're not apart of Australia, you're worse than New Zealand. Go join some other country, you're not welcome here.
By the way, this post was supposed to be sarcastic rant. Thought the continued mentioning of New Zealand would have given away that it wasn't serious :p
