How do you guys rate this bloke. I recon he played pretty well against the dogs. Will he play more this year than the previous year?

I thought he was fairly average against the dogs. Seems to do very very well in the reserves but hasnt really stepped up at senior level in the trial matches or the two he played last year. Could be interesting to see his development.

I think he is one of those players that could well and truely step up this year if he is given game time. He has bulked up a bit I reckon if he could play around 10 to 14 games it will be considered a big improvement. But our midfield is strong so he might find it tough trying to break through in the midfield.

Well now is really his chance with Schneider and Ablett missing the first few rounds.

Sorry to be boring but every time I see his or Grundy's name I type the same thing; end of season 2007 delisting.

Simply not quick enough and his skills aren't good enough to compensate for his lack of pace.

If anyone wants an example of why he won't make it look at the last 5 minutes of the game against the WDB.

He had the ball on the wing and knew he wasn't quick enpugh to get around his opponent so passed the ball to a Sydney player clear in the centre. Only problem he missed the target by about 2 metres, resulting in the centre square player picking up the ball on the half volley and therefore immdetiately under pressure.

Though one thing he did better than any of our other players in that match was in centre clearances, especially in the 1st half.

Pace is a small issue when you play in the centre, where work rate is more important, and Schmidt doesn't have a problem there, he's quite willing to get stuck into the packs. Admittedly his disposal was off in the Bulldogs game, but generally he is a very good kick, helped by the fact that he's got good vision/decision-making.

There's still a long way to go, obviously, but he's about on par with the likes of Moore, Laidlaw and possibly Bevan in terms of pressing for selection. And in a team that has a serious lack of young extractors, it wouldn't be too surprising to see Schmidt play a major role in our 2007 premiership tilt.

I agree with scottwade, he's too slow to succeed in the AFL.

He reminds me a bit of Greg Williams in that he can get in and under and get possessions. To survive he will need to become deadly with his disposal and hit targets. He seems to lack penertration in his kicking so quick handballs might be his game.

Not sure where he'll end up. Wouldn't mind seeing a bit more of him, though. As long as he can shake a tackle and hit a target he'll always be useful, I guess.

You'd hate to crucify the kid on one moment of play - but actually I had the very same thought when that happened. Obviously a ball magnet in the minors but the quality of disposals with the big boys lets him down. Hope we're proved wrong!

Jury still out on Grundy IMHO - may still have a role to play, & fast leading forwards are gonna revel in this new "push in the back" interpretation.

We've suffered some bad flooding tactics from opposition sides so far this year, and Tim is an in-an-under player so he's definitely fitting right in at the moment. Hadn't seen enough of him to comment before. He was well off the pace last year. But that long goal on the siren from outside 50 last week has the thumbs up from me. We need as many midfielders that can take the pressure off with a gola or two as we an get. :thumbsu:

Obviously incorrect. The guys problem (in the first few senior games he's played) is not that he is slow or that his skills are inadequate, but quite the opposite. His skills by foot but especially by hand are as good as the best at the Swans. While not super quick, he is not a turtle by any means. His main problem is (was) trying to adjust to the pace of the game in the seniors.

Watching him in the last two games he's played especially, you can see this. It makes him look like he is slow/indecisive/lacking skill etc...What do you expect from the guy?...its hard to get a gig at the Swans and when you do you can't expect players who've played in the Canberra comp to look like N. Buckley's straight away. Going by the last game, I think he has just about adjusted to the pace of the game in the seniors. He is also a goal kicking midfielder, something we lack with J. Bolton, Kirk and McVeigh to a lesser extent not producing this regularly.

Btw, the guy will be a gun.

Gees I'm an idiot :o

Not an idiot at all. I think sometimes we forget just how hard at it our team really is. Our intensity has been making a lot of teams look ordinary in recent years. And I've been just as guilty of marking kids too hard forgetting what an ordeal it is coming up from the reserves and trying match it with possibly the fittest side in footy.

Moore struggled in his first season as well. But before his injury he was making massive strides in his second year. And I'm expecting Schmidt to do the same.

Everyone seems excited after a couple of late goals - but I remain thoroughly unconvinced. Just lacks the polish at this stage, missing targets, poor decision-making etc - hardly Robinson Crusoe on that front at the Swans atm, but he'll miss the boat unless he takes his chances now.

I agree he is nowhere near being a first pick player. But I have no doubt that Roos will back him for quite a few rounds over the season to see what he can do.

If Schmidt was delisted he would be snapped up by any number of clubs. Once again, he suffers from Sydneyitis. Trying to break into a very experianced and settled side. How many have we received the other way over the last few years. Craig Bolton anyone? They won't delist Schmidt, the Swans are too smart for that.

Nothing wrong with this kid!
I can't actually believe anyone can be so negative ab out him. My thoughts are that he will be an integral part of the future for the Swans. Roos firstly develops a pure defensive attitude in these players because this is not something that comes naturally for these talented juniors. They all have been brought up playing with an attacking flair so Roos doesn't need to instill that in them. That just comes naturally.
Focus on looking after your man, cover your your teammates when they are attacking & then you will become one of the Bloods!!
Cheers!
