time for a change!

Slowly but surely younger players are starting to get a crack now. Malceski last season, Schmidt and Moore are getting a bit of game time now that a couple of injuries are taking hold. Grundy and Philips have both had a few cracks since the start of last season. The only one that hasn;t impressed me has been grundy. The others i think will hold their own in the future. I think the main area the Swans are going to struggle is for key position players once the likes of Leo Barry and Barry Hall call it a day.

EDIT: I should add Bevan too, although, like Grundy, hasn';t impressed me.

Im pretty sure he got 25 min match time, i will have to find the paper to confirm, still not as lot . I dont know if he is being instructed to play a receiving role as he does seem to be playing that way when he is on, I would have thought as he is slightly slower than some others he would be a in the pack sort of a player.

I probably should of elaborated that he is only getting in the team at the moment because of the injuries. He'll probably be back in the 2's once Buchanan is back, but yeah, you are right about the actual game time he is getting although i didn't think it was as little as that.

I think there is potential in him though. We won't be trading him anytime soon.

exactly, he is an in and under goal kicking midfielder with exceptional skills

Would you like to suggest who we drop, I've hear Jude Boltons name floated around here a fair bit but I think he will come good.

While we dont have the youngest list I don’t think we’ve got panic stations about retirements just yet either.


I'm a bit peeved at Ted Richards this year, he is running hot and cold.

I'm really not too upset with the season so far. We've had a rash of injuries, some close losses to quality opposition, and some poor first halves which have been costing us, but we're nowhere near baby-with-the-bathwater time surely?

4-2 would have been a very good start, much better than almost anything we've achieved for the last 9 years. So scraping in at 3-3, whilst a little underwhelming, is still a solid base to build on IMHO.

I think if roos had reached that point Davis would not be playing at all, there is an old saying in horse racing, dont back a horse second up, as it was Nicks second game of the year lets give him a little more time to settle (Some horses make an absolute mockery of that theory though, so don’t take it as me handing out punting advice).

Agree with Tuco, drastic action is not called for, that’s wha is called for at Richmond.

As much as some people like to believe that people are ignoring Davis' leads and what not, the Swans want to win. There's a group of people who like to focus on how many times Davis leads and gets ignored but it happens to every single player. Davis needs to work harder if he wants the ball.

I think they are trying to blood as many young ones as they can but this has to be done cautiously.

If you think back ....one of Roos key successes in taking over from Eade was to "back the players" and not be too critical. Rather he enpowered them to take individual and collective ownership of performance on and off field. IT has WORKED!

Also Swans haven't the best list but can compensate by having a stable best 22 or 24, with a great understanding of the game plan. Players get used to playing along side one another which has been a key strength and why often senior Swans players carry injury into games. eg Kennelly was a big loss not so much for the run but his intuitive undertanding of how Bolton & Barry play and others knowing what to expect from him!

The disciplined gameplan Swans play is not suitable to too many newbies at one time. Younger players development is enhanced if they really have to strive to make it into senior side and treasure it!... but admittedly also have to have hope of getting in there.

Sometimes the worse thing to do after one bad game is to drop a player and lower his confidence even more!

Who knows why we keep taking that option but it's not only Davis' leads that are being ignored in that situation.

I saw Davis present a couple of times without getting a pass, and he looked pretty frustrated. But I think that had as much to do with the fact that he never had a metre to spare on his opponent all night, so when he did find room and it wasn't rewarded it really got to him. But as others have said, that happens every week to any Sydney forward you care to mention. Hall in particular is always screaming for service.

I think we just notice it more when things don't go our way - such as in the Adel game, or on Sat night in the first half.

Yep - I was there. I noticed Davis leading quite a bit and being ignored (so that they could pass to Hall with 3 on him). He seemed to be placed in the goal square too - spent a lot of time there. I think his second efforts are okay, but not great. Not much worse than plenty of others in our forward line though.

He's not a good overhead mark, but few in our forward line are. But, other small forwards haven't been either, and they can still get the ball to them. Look at Williams of Hawthorn - most of his goals come from passes to his chest (so do many of Hall's for that matter).

In terms of those guys, McVeigh is useless. Worst game I've seen him play. Has gone seriously backwards this year.

Mathews generally stops his man, but he spends virtually the entire night watching his man and not the ball, which makes him a liability at times.

J Bolton is struggling.

Crouch is looking slow.

Our midfield is looking quite slow and this is particularly shown up by the absence of Kennelly. I think we need to gradually rotate in some speedy midfielders from the reserves. Our midfield was abysmal on Saturday. Most of them spent much of the time watching their man and not the ball, so when we win the tap, our guys are too busy trying to shepherd their opponent rather than getting the ball.

Good post Thanks I reckon ya always get a better feel for it live. I did see Davis clear a few times (commentators made mention of it) and the kick it to Hall is frustrating if he is stationary and not one out

Might go watch the 2's this week keen to see who else I can hope they give a go in the middle next year. Midfield is too slow without Goodesy playing well!

Its not just Davis I have also noticed Schmidt Moore even Grundy
And in the first round Auskick was on his own several times to which he could have kick 3/4 And guess who they kick it to BBB / Mol which have 2 or three players on them And I still say Auskick was stiff not to be in the side for Rd 2 and thats just my opinion
