After 5 years at the helm, who is responsible for the teams performance?
Who makes draft decisions?
Who develops the list?
Who sets the game plan?
Who communicates the game plan to the players?
Who makes the team selections?
Who is responsible for motivating the players?
Who makes the gameday tactical moves?
Who took a team from 14th to 3rd in the space of 12 months?
We have had 7 rounds of the season, three wins, one game that was stolen from us and ended up a draw. If the players had kicked straight at goal and not taken some very stupid options in the games against Essendon and Hawthorn both sides would have been buried by half time; you can't hold JYD responsible for the abysmal goal kicking in the first halves of those two games - that is purely down to the players.
By my reckoning we could very easily be 6-1 at this point of the season.
Laidley has proven he can get the most out of this squad. Let's face it we aren't blessed with a great list but I'd be hard pressed to suggest any potential alternative to Laidley who could get anything more from the players.

Not sure about Arch...maybe as an assistant or specialist coach. We need to make a big offer to a coach who has shown he can spot and develope young talent. I know that's difficult but we need to get the cheque book out and make a decent offer. Clarkson won't consider it, especially what his team is potentially on the verge of but someone like Woosher??? He may need a change of environment.
a shithead.
Clarkson will coach us within 3 years
Lets compare clarkson to laidley
Clarkson has developed a squad of young talent from the start
while laidley plays hacks like grant - sansbury-brown and gets sam power
No he won't.
Anyway... he made the best of taking over a team on the bottom, and wanted to stay there for a while to draft as much young talent at the top of the draft as he could. Brave strategy whcih would only pay off with some luck. More power to him, but Laidley took on a team that was performing ok so had no access to the top of the draft, has kept it performing pretty well, not to mention weathering off-field crap Clarkson wouldn't dream of.
If you think Guerra and Dew are young talent, look out. I'm not completely convinced by Ladson or a few others either. Happy to have our young guys and happy to see them played more consistently, but will not get sucked into the Hawthorn PR machine.

Guerra was only 23 when the Hawks picked him up.
Laidley is pathetic under pressure.
That may be but he wasn't exactly a spring chicken AFL wise. Apart from that he's finished anyway. He doesn't have the pace to alter his game and the rule inclusions have basically made him redundant.
Not a 'spring chicken AFL wise'? What - you mean he was experienced at the top level? Since when is that a bad thing?
Last I heard he was part of a Hawthorn back six that were all operating at over 80% disposal efficiency, and were part of a team touted as the only genuine contenders to Geelong thus far.
But hey, I'm sure he's finished![]()
What you meant to say is that Hawthorns highly efficient midfield is relieving pressure on it's not so amazing backline. I don't care what anyone says, Hawthorns backline is ordinary, and Clarkson's game plan highlights that.Last I heard he was part of a Hawthorn back six that were all operating at over 80% disposal efficiency, and were part of a team touted as the only genuine contenders to Geelong thus far.
Me too. An ordinary one paced footballer. But hey, I'm sure he's finished![]()

Calm down. A key point here is that he was rejected by two clubs already, so it's fair to call anyone arguing he is part of Clarko's group of young homegrowns.
IMO, he's a weak link and they don't appear to have many.
LOL
i was banned for suggesting this
but i think he is a shithead.
we should get Archer to take over as temp for the rest of the season then get clarkson.
The difference is that Clarkson knew his best games in SA were played across half bank but Port and the Saints played him predominately across half forward. That is target recruitment and he is rewarding Hawthorn by being a very solid contributor in a position Hawthorn was lacking. I acknowledge he isn't the best half bank flanker going around but fits into the Hawthorn jigsaw that Clarkson is constructing. We have done well out of so called rejects over the years so I think that arguement is redundant personally.

Exactly, that's my point. We're not 6-1 we're 3-1-3 and lucky to be that. Last year was a waste of time, we got flogged in 2 finals (which is what its all about). If the players can't kick straight, make bad decisions under pressure or can't follow the game plan then that is ultimately the coaches fault for picking them &/or not coaching them properly.
Our list is OK, 1 star away from being top 4 list in the comp.
An idea:
- Play all the talented kids to find out who can play.
- Don't play older players who wouldn't get a game for Geelong.
- Off load a couple of players with interstate currency.
- Load up on young talent in '08 & '09 drafts.
- Win the flag in 2011/2012.
1) We are playing young players. Why do people think that we arent?
2) Thats pretty much all of them with the exception of Boomer.
Maybe Simmo might sneak a game with the Cats & Firrito & Thompson & Jones & Pratt & maybe Rawlings & Harding. All others over the Age of 26 are treading water and could/should be replaced by younger players. Did I leave anyone out?
The fact Hansen, Urquart, S Thompson, Greenwood, Riggio & Ross haven't played (more) this season is a travesty. Surely we need to fast track their development.
