Time for a new coach?

Speaking to a guy down at AAMI Stadium today (I work there, hes a Power fan too). He believes that since their has been no major changes at Port Adelaide that everyone has gotten too confertable in their positions because they know that they are not going anywhere anytime soon. Im not talking about the Players im talking about the CEO, President and Coach.

Cunningham used to hold Williams at Bay because he had done so much for the club and loved it, John James comes from a cycling background and couldnt care less about Port on the field, just off the field. Bolton rarley gets a mention anymore.

Chocco was a good coach but has been outcoached on so many occasions and struggles to react in game time hence he does not have a plan B, something a U8s coach has!! Collingwood can have him because I believe hes past his used by day at Port Adelaide.

So after Alberton Magpie sends Chocko to Baghdad, who would you get to replace him

Sheedy Semi Retired

Voss Gold Coast Bound

Bomber Thompson Essendon tried and he stayed with the cats

Paul Roos He likes Sydney and they Like him

Leigh Matthews He likes his golf too much to leave Qld

Primus Most likely

"Cwaigy" One club coach.

Hardwick, Possible

Without painting the target on Choco, you have to assume one day he'll go, whether of his own decision or otherwise. And this same redundant argument about who will replace him will come up.

But who knows anything really about the coaching pool out there? The club will interview and you would hope appoint on the basis of greatest aptitude shown, with an eye to finding and developing the club's young talent through the future and an appreciation of what it is to 'be' Port Adelaide.

Roos was an assistant coach, unknown quantity, ditto Worsfold, Clarkson, while he did coach Centrals to a premiership, you can't pin SANFL success as the badge of merit to succeed in the AFL, so I guess Craig too was fairly unknown as a coach despite some success with Norwood (but no flag). Even Bomber Thompson came up from the assistant pool, hung in there through the tough times and is now reaping the benefits. Hopefully Bailey will survive his tough initiation and prosper. Sure there are the failures too, but that's where you have to put some faith in the club to make the right decisions.

There are plenty of assistant coaches who will make good coaches. The question is whether you can land a great one and avoid getting a dud.

McKenna, Harwick, Primus, O'Donnell, Longmire, Adrian Fletcher, Brad Scott, Peter German, Brent Sanderson, David King and Brian "Choco" Royal all come across as being talented individuals who if they coached the way they played the game will be good senior coaches. German has coached in the WAFL and I think he was the WA coach in 2006.

You have to find one that will sit comfortable with the culture and traditions of the club and will be good enough to impose a change that is for the better not the worse.

If you look at great sporting clubs in many sports, you see that they are smart enough to replace a great coach with another one if not straight away, then not long after the first one left.

We did it with Fos and Jack. Hawks did it with Kennedy and then Jeans and Carlton with Barassi and then Parkin. North took longer to go from Barassi to Pagan.

Look at Richmond, average coaches since Hafey, St Kilda after Jeans, Melbourne after Smith,

It IS silly to discuss replacing Choco, but if metaphorically speaking he was hit by a bus tomorrow, i reckon the club could do worse than give the job to Mickan who's now at Glenelg. He's done some good things there, as he did with WWT a decade or so ago. I'd be more inclined to go with someone like that than Sanderson, Scott or Royal.

I know this is from left field but Grant Thomas? He was a good coach at St.Kilda and should never have been fired in my opinion.

Only if Gerard Neesham can be his assistant :)

Mark Williams is the BEST coach in the AFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is a GUN. Would luv him at Carlton. Ratts will be good but not as good as Choco.

you have to be taking the piss, lol you are the single most ridiculous poster on bigfooty

I will give you 4-

1. Craig
2. Worsfold
3. Roos
4. Thompson

no surely you jest!!

craig - the worst finals record in the AFL
Worsfold - a good coach, a premiership coach but no better than Choco (look at WCE 2008)
Roos- a good coach, premieship coach but no better record than Choco
Thompson- good coach, premiersghip coach with the cattle to do it. Which other side can boast 9 all Australians from 1 year in their team?

If Choco were ready to give it up, I would only consider 2 other coaches and they are Clarkson and Matthews.

Choco just needs to go back to a simple game plan with forwards in the forward line.

Great idea get rid of a guys who coached a side that should of finished 6th to 10th into a grand final... I assume this thread is a joke of some sort

Just on the OP's comment regarding John James being only interested in off field issues consider this.

John James is doing his job which is looking after the off field side of the club. He's doing a great job generating dollars, ie he is one of those people, from the coach down to the boot studder, that Fos Williams insisted must be focussed on success and not involved for the party.

John James is doing his job.

Craig? pfftt. Had two years where they had zero injuries for 90% of the year and fell over in the finals three years in a row. Not even close.

craig is certainly not without his problems - but you've just posed utter rubbish.

we had 1 golden injury run, 2005. however, that came to an end towards the end of the season. Injury to our leading ruckman, Roo being an idiot, goodwin playing off dal santo etc... but we could've done better in 2005 no doubt. However, lets not forget we were spoon favourites that season.

I'd be interested to know what the other year was?

given the cattle, you're dreaming if you don't think he's done a great job.

Now as for choco, a guy who also has his faults. what's certainly true is that he's shown he's a good coach, and I mean in the last couple of years. things have gotten harder, and he's shown he is up to it.

however, he's not shown that he's SOOOOOO good that he'll never be stale, or that you'll never tune him out. sometimes people need a change of scenary to freshen the place up, don't think it's now. But you don't have the best, more irreplaceable coach in the league, there will be a time - and for that reason it can be discussed. its not his time yet though.

Alberton Magpie reminds me of a special camper or 2 we have down our way; enjoy yours! :p

I don't think we should get rid of Choco - though I do think we need a board strong enough to rein him in again.

That said those spouting the whole 'who's better' lines are dribbling crap to some extent. By that rationale Sheedy would still be coaching Essendon and Pagan Carlton - and to take it to it's ultimate end, the PAFC would still be coached by Cahill.

There comes a time when coaches become 'stale' in their current environment or completing get passed by the game. Choco hasn't reached that point, but some yellow flags at least are waving. Choco needs some strong willed assistants who aren't ex-Port players or teammates of his, who are willing to tell him when he's wrong. The coaches box isn't a democracy, but it's not meant to be a dictatorship either.

I missed this post. agree entirely.

06, and I dont particularly care what Crows supporters say. You guys were statistically as far in front of the competition than any other side has been in the modern era and it came crashing down. You had another dream injury run for 3/4 of the year then came the flirting with training techniques, some unfortunate injuries/unheard of viruses but still in the end you had the GF in your hands but couldnt get over the line.

given the cattle, you're dreaming if you don't think he's done a great job.

Very good job? Yes without doubt, though I believe your cattle deserves more credit than most give it. No.1 in the league like Mr. Magpies ranking? Nope.

I dont believe he is irreplaceable either and would welcome some fresh ideas from the assistants and beleive that Mark can be stubborn to his and the teams detriment at times.

But he is a very good coach...its just a pity most outside of Alberton dont believe so because of his demeanour through the media.

I rate Chocko as a a coach and cant believe this thread....A few bad games and the knives come out. If they lose tonight is the
"Baghdad" sign coming out????

Chocko is not pefect, no coach is, but he is a good football coach. I reckon he may need to change his gameplan a bit. And I love his media persona.

But I Like Craigy too...
