Autopsy Time for a rebuild?

I probably used popr phrasing there. Look, it's not as if our midfield got pantsed tonight like they did against the Dogs and Lions. There was zero composure from them but they found enough of the footy. Broke even more or less in clearances and won centre clearances. Our lack of composure is only magnified because of.our lack of structure forward of centre. You contrast that to Melbourne's structure in terms of.the way they move the ball into their forward line. It is precise and methodical. They create space in tight windows. That has little to do with a talent gap between us and them but rather a gap stylistically in terms of our front half structure.

I have no doubt that even a semi competent coach would have this team up and running at a much higher gear.

Create space? What is this magic you talk of? Is that like kicking to all the talls in the same spot?

Bottom out this year and next.
Get rid of Bassett now, poach a proper forward coach.
Get rid of Hinkley mid 2022 season.
Hand reins to Montgomery as caretaker.
Start the search now for new coach for 2023 season.
Apologise profusely to Robbie Gray and Travis Boak.
Hope like * that supporters stick around.

Our biggest uptick came when we had butters, rozee and duursma firing along.

It's a given that ken is useless and will go. Maybe it's in a year or two, who knows. But he's almost gone (yay!).

We need to start over. Unfortunately ken has burnt the careers of Boak and Gray, they aren't part of our next flag. Guys like motlop and Dixon aren't either.

Our defence is a bunch of b graders at best. We're going to need to hit the draft hard and maybe make a few more ruthless trades. Time to stop topping up with guys like motlop, rockliff, aliir, etc.

We are non competitive with top sides and falling further off the pace.
It is already in the making. The challenge is to be in "perpetual rebuilding," while remaining competitive. Port has shown an outstanding capacity for rebuilding without falling into a cliff; that, without any special F/S or Academy pick. In itself, this is a great accomplishment.

We need to move upwards. That's where we have been failing. But I have no idea on how to do it.

No rebuild is needed. This list is so ripe for a coach with some actual good ideas. We’re primed for a not-so-extreme 2012 to 2013 turnaround if someone who can develop an intelligent gameplan takes the reins. I would reserve judgment on stagnating players until then

Re-build will achieve very little if we have the same coaches/same s**t boring game plan.

Let's hope Ken steps down. Has a coach ever stepped down when the team is in the 8?

BACKS
Back line is too one paced & still lacking a legitimate AFL quality KPD.

MIDS
Injuries have seriously curtailed the develop our younger Mids this season.
- Houston has failed to step up
- Age profile shortfall - limited A Graders in the 23-28 yo window

FORWARDS
Marshall is a bust unfortunately - the kid just doesn’t appear have the on field presence, hunger, desire, or combative spirit to make it at this level.
Fantasia is a big asset, but hardly plays
I always thought Ladhams could offer something up front & chop out in the middle when required.

COACH
The elephant in the room that keeps on giving

We have no 2nd and 3rd round picks, we will make the finals this year downhill skiing against softc@ck teams. There's nowhere to hide next year, i am afraid, we need to trade for draft picks this year. Do whatever it takes to get Jason Horne.

Ouch.

We aren’t winning a flag in the next two years. So we are simply treading water.

Take the band-aid off now and get rid of him, if it’s only a 6 months payout then it’s on the club management, no excuses.

Elephant in the room - Single biggest problem this club has….

No point trading for draft picks when all we spend them on is flankers. We’re a team of flankers and haven’t drafted a genuine centre square mid for who knows how many years now.

Our midfield is dire and in serious trouble when boak retires.

We need to throw the kitchen sink at Josh Kelly

Im not so much thinking a full rebuild, but a refresh is the go.
Although not before a coaching change.

Boak, Gray, Jonas Dixon stay

Motlop Hartlett Rockliff Mayes Move on

Bonner Ladhams trade for a mid

We have a massive age gap between our old blokes and our young blokes.

It is the weakest spot on the list for sure, but it's hardly diabolical.

Despite his age Boak is still an A Grader. Ollie has been a top 5 player in the comp this season. Butters will make the grade in the middle, as will Duursma. Drew is a solid player but needs to improve. He is only 22 so he deserves a chance to develop in that defensive role. With Rockliff almost certain to be let go at the end of the year they'll have plenty of cash to throw at an established midfielder in the off season as well.

I think at times our midfield has let us down against top sides - specifically Brisbane and the Bulldogs. But against Geelong and Melbourne tonight our midfield did more than enough. It is rather the lack of composure and lack of structure forward of centre that is our biggest issue.

Alastair Clarkson was able to win a premiership with Will freaking Langford as a midfielder. Don't need a bunch of A-Graders at every spot in the middle to win games - unless youre Hinkley of course, because there's always a supposed missing piece to his plan.
Thinking that our midfield did enough tonight is absolutely baffling.

I heard Clarko is available in 2023… would be a good start, get it done!
Realistically, he’s probably available next year.

We have got a good list with some great young talent, add Clarko and we can probably lure in an elite free agent or two to top that off. Clarko then has a chance at a few more flags and cementing himself as the greatest AFL coach of all time.

if we could insert some a grade midfielders who had clean fast disposal and were first to the ball..and didnt just bomb it long to packs

Our premiership window was '14-'20. The fact that we wasted most of that time bathing in our own mediocrity doesn't change that. The list is cooked and nearly over the cliff. Injuries are often the first sign, as both Richmond and West Coast are also discovering (only difference is they have trophies to show for it).

We need to aim for 4 first round draft picks in the next 2 years as a starting point.

In the main, everything has already been said.
We don’t seem to have a visible trajectory leading to success every time we have a promising season. We just simply regress to being mediocre. This seems to be a pattern with the players as well.
Will Wines, Boak, Drew, SPP, Jonas etc ever develop into consistent ball users? Will Marshall, Amon, Bonner, Farrell, Ladhams, Burton etc ever develop the robustness and vigour required to turn into hardened AFL players?
We know the answer under Ken. We need to find out under a new coaching panel.

I don't know about a rebuild, you can gradually phase young players into more responsible roles without burning the house down.

There is no silver bullet, top 10 quality mids aren't just going to appear at the club like Field of Dreams.

Get Bergman in the centre square. He's tough, quick, athletic and can kick a ball 50m effortlessly. You need those incisive players in the heart of the team.

Reward form in the sanfl. Hayes and Garner have been killing it but we let them languish. Make some hard decisions on players. Aliir in the ruck, it still does my head in.

We could have played Ladhams or Hayes but no we stacked our backline with almost tall defenders, one who admitted he was gassed after a game of sanfl footy and threw our tallest and best defender in the ruck. And then forward when the tall forwards couldn't do the job.

Put guys in positions they are meant to play. Select a side that makes sense. SPP is not a pressure forward. Yes he did some dumb s**t last night but at least he looked angry about the whole shitshow and was desperate.

If you're going to pick a guy in a mid season draft that is intended to strengthen your current team, pick that player. All respect to Jed McEntee, he would have been there in the ND this year, probably even as a rookie. Otherwise play him in the role you chose him for.

Tell the players to play like they mean it. Our players have mastered the art of standing around. Mark, stop, start, stop, kick to a contest. If you're going to play continual contested footy, stop running at training all the time and get a rugby weights coach in.

Our kick in strategy, what a joke. Kick it long to Max Gawn. Wait what we're not Melbourne? Oh s**t. How about going the other side of the ground and a few players actually gut run to support?

Show some aggression at home. This is our home turf. Make other teams feel it. Look at the way the Lions defend the Gabba. See above about rugby weights coach for clues. We're not going to get free kicks anyway so enjoy not getting them.

Stop the selection merry go round for a select few. Every week Woodcock, Bonner and Frederick are emergencies. Just stop it. Either they're good enough or they're not. Frederick should play as a small defender, he has shown enough aptitude. The other two should be back in the wash.

Maybe accept last year's game plan is so, well last year. This year our defence looks so porous, every time a team gets out of defence they look like scoring.

Stop picking senior players because you like them. Fos Williams did it because by the end of their career they had half a dozen or more premierships. These guys don't. They're just chasing greatness and it's a bit quick.

Realistically this team has one more year left before it needs a full scale rebuild.

Unfortunately, we know who will be coaching that one year.

It is not even close to a full scale rebuild.

Yes we need to focus on youth but when you have as a core Rozee, Duursma, Butters, Bergman, Georgiadis, Hayes and Jones you are not starting from the bottom.
