It’s time for a new coach, how many players do we need to turn over before someone realises it’s not the players.
I probably used popr phrasing there. Look, it's not as if our midfield got pantsed tonight like they did against the Dogs and Lions. There was zero composure from them but they found enough of the footy. Broke even more or less in clearances and won centre clearances. Our lack of composure is only magnified because of.our lack of structure forward of centre. You contrast that to Melbourne's structure in terms of.the way they move the ball into their forward line. It is precise and methodical. They create space in tight windows. That has little to do with a talent gap between us and them but rather a gap stylistically in terms of our front half structure.
I have no doubt that even a semi competent coach would have this team up and running at a much higher gear.
It is already in the making. The challenge is to be in "perpetual rebuilding," while remaining competitive. Port has shown an outstanding capacity for rebuilding without falling into a cliff; that, without any special F/S or Academy pick. In itself, this is a great accomplishment. Our biggest uptick came when we had butters, rozee and duursma firing along.
It's a given that ken is useless and will go. Maybe it's in a year or two, who knows. But he's almost gone (yay!).
We need to start over. Unfortunately ken has burnt the careers of Boak and Gray, they aren't part of our next flag. Guys like motlop and Dixon aren't either.
Our defence is a bunch of b graders at best. We're going to need to hit the draft hard and maybe make a few more ruthless trades. Time to stop topping up with guys like motlop, rockliff, aliir, etc.
We are non competitive with top sides and falling further off the pace.
Bottom out this year and next.
Ken won’t ever step down, he’s sticking around and milking us for every cent he can get.Re-build will achieve very little if we have the same coaches/same sh*t boring game plan.
Let's hope Ken steps down. Has a coach ever stepped down when the team is in the 8?
We have no 2nd and 3rd round picks, we will make the finals this year downhill skiing against softc@ck teams. There's nowhere to hide next year, i am afraid, we need to trade for draft picks this year. Do whatever it takes to get Jason Horne.
Bottom out this year and next.
Get rid of Bassett now, poach a proper forward coach.
Get rid of Hinkley mid 2022 season.
Hand reins to Montgomery as caretaker.
Start the search now for new coach for 2023 season.
Apologise profusely to Robbie Gray and Travis Boak.
Hope like fu** that supporters stick around.
BACKS
Back line is too one paced & still lacking a legitimate AFL quality KPD.
MIDS
Injuries have seriously curtailed the develop our younger Mids this season.
- Houston has failed to step up
- Age profile shortfall - limited A Graders in the 23-28 yo window
FORWARDS
Marshall is a bust unfortunately - the kid just doesn’t appear have the on field presence, hunger, desire, or combative spirit to make it at this level.
Fantasia is a big asset, but hardly plays
I always thought Ladhams could offer something up front & chop out in the middle when required.
COACH
The elephant in the room that keeps on giving
Thinking that our midfield did enough tonight is absolutely baffling. It is the weakest spot on the list for sure, but it's hardly diabolical.
Despite his age Boak is still an A Grader. Ollie has been a top 5 player in the comp this season. Butters will make the grade in the middle, as will Duursma. Drew is a solid player but needs to improve. He is only 22 so he deserves a chance to develop in that defensive role. With Rockliff almost certain to be let go at the end of the year they'll have plenty of cash to throw at an established midfielder in the off season as well.
I think at times our midfield has let us down against top sides - specifically Brisbane and the Bulldogs. But against Geelong and Melbourne tonight our midfield did more than enough. It is rather the lack of composure and lack of structure forward of centre that is our biggest issue.
Alastair Clarkson was able to win a premiership with Will freaking Langford as a midfielder. Don't need a bunch of A-Graders at every spot in the middle to win games - unless youre Hinkley of course, because there's always a supposed missing piece to his plan.
Realistically, he’s probably available next year.I heard Clarko is available in 2023… would be a good start, get it done!
We hack the ball out of the midfield a lot, which means kicks fall short a lot.People complain about our forward line. Half of that problem is the atrocious hack kick delivery.
Realistically this team has one more year left before it needs a full scale rebuild.
Unfortunately, we know who will be coaching that one year.
