Time to admit, Hawthorn are not very good.

Did say earlier in the year that I think we are still another trade/draft period away from being firmly in contention.

I thought 2025 was all about consolidating ourselves as a finals contender (which I would like to think we are on the way there) rather than just being a flash in the pan last season.

Need another season into the likes of Ward/Mackenzie/Weddle/Dear and for a few of them to breakout from good young players to A-graders (Weddle arguably almost there).

Probably right where they should be. Young list that is progressing but will show signs of regression. Have topped up their list to assist the youth accordingly. It’s not unusual for teams to go backwards after going forwards. I’d not be surprised if they didn’t make the 8.

Brisbane are in the flag window. 5 goal loss to a very good and experienced side pushing for another premiership is about right.

To say that aren’t very good isn’t accurate. They are good, but they’re not up there just yet.
they are the 10th youngest list and 7th most experienced in terms of average games per player

I think we can all agree that Jack Srimshaw, Harry Morrison, Josh Battle, James Worpel are not the youngsters anymore. they are not the saviours. they are what they are

They have some good young kids but the core of the side is there already.

Missing finals wouldn't be the end of the world (see Geelong 2006 after 2004-2005), and I doubt that happens anyway. I had Hawthorn 5th before the season started - could just as easily have seen them top 4 or 5th-8th. They're still tracking pretty well.

When is Day expected back? Finish top 4 and have him fit for finals, then the Hawks remain contenders. Just not favourites.

Likely not for another few months and I'd guess the Hawks would be quite cautious given his age.

It would be nice if he can get a bit of touch before the finals. Hopefully we can hold down the fort until the cavalry come back.

The addition of Lewis/Dear will also be big. Teams are sitting back against us because they know we don't have a bail out kick down the line. Chol and Gunston (both are having very good seasons but are too similar type of players) are just not the type of forward you can rely on to take the pressure off the back six. It's forcing our players to over possess the ball trying to run through the zone and we are turning the ball over far more than we did last season.

No chance we will finish top 4.

7th at best imo.
