I love people being anti-draw because it is 'anti climatic'

I am guessing these people will say exactly the same thing and the first grand final that goes to ET ends up being won by a side 5 goals to zero.

Gil on radio saying the two halves are no time on and so players will know from clock when its approaching the 5 min mark and if golden score will apply.

Issue i have is no time on. What if player does bad injury and stretcher / buggy called and 3-4 mins of grand final extra time is lost?!?
Doesn't sound right, someone is getting mixed up. The normal time off/on rules would apply.

Getting rid of the replay was spot on. Think of how you'd feel when you've finally scored a ticket to a grand final after years of supporting your club only to get no result. Let alone fans that travel from outside of Victoria, indeed outside of the country (I know of a bloke that travelled from Iceland to get to the 2015 Grand Final).

Extra time until there is a winner is the best and fairest approach.

Exactly, getting to a ticket to a Grand Final does not entitle you to a result on that day!!!

The world is bigger than your Grand Final ticket, the world is bigger than some corporate wannabe that wants to see a result at a certain time.

The world is about the fan who wants to see his or her team win a premiership after years and years of toil, like a Melbourne FC fan and waiting another week for the right result is irrelevant!!!

Try and tell someone waiting 40 years plus they lost the chance of victory because of some BS anomaly in a 5 minute shortened version where the opposing team could not win in normal accepted time!!!

No.

I never want a club to have to go through what we went through.

I would go through what you went through than waiting 30 plus years of hell where where not even near it!!!

At least you lost a premiership in a Grand Final fair and square!!!

Most of us waited so long we could not even celebrate in 2017 and are waiting for the next one to enjoy!!

Sure I mean I am happy we made it to grand finals.

But, momentum.

The replay was so deflating, we were emotionally spent after the first match.

Thats fine but at least you experience hope and the expectation you where contending and had belief.

We never even experienced that in 2017 because no one believed so we could not choke and then we could not lose mathematically at the end so we could not believe we won.

We just battled and slogged it out not even daring to dream!!

What do you mean by some bs anomoly?
How did they lose a chance of victory?

Well in a real game the game is longer and things equal themselves out generally or stakeholders have the opportunity to counteract chance so hopefully the best team wins even though sometimes a draw occurs. So if that occurs thats a signal you go again next week!!

In a 5 minute stretch or 10 minute stretch weird things can effect the result like an umpire decision, one off injury so not necessarily the better team wins on the day which effects all the effort put in the year and the build up in the years before sometimes 10 years or so in terms of list build and development etc !!

Imagine if Port was in a Grand Final against Brisbane and they carried on like flogs on the weekend and they did what they did to Lachie Neale on the weekend and lost the last ten minutes of a overtime period in a GF like they did in the first minutes of the first quarter on the weekend!!

Picture this. A Grand Final is played in a uncharacteristically blustery September day. There is a gale blowing to one end of the ground. All game the team kicking with the win has had a 5 goal advantage. So much so that scores are dead level at the end of the fourth quarter. We then go into extra time and the wind picks up some more. The team kicking with the wind first nails 3 goals straight in the first 5 minutes. The teams switch ends and the team kicking with the wind second then levels things up and as the clock passes 5 minutes scores are once again level.

The game then goes to golden point just as the ball gets back to the centre square. The team kicking against the wind clears the ball from the centre but is unable to penetrate far into their attacking fifty. The team kicking with the wind gather the ball and with two long bombs have a stoppage deep in their forward line.
The ball is thrown up and the attacking ruckman fists it through for a behind and his team then become premiers.

Obviously this is extremely unlikely to happen, especially with the Grand Final at the MCG. But you've got to factor in unlikely scenarios when you're implementing rules.

I am just very anti golden point :p
I'm not a fan of golden point, but after a certain period, say after ET 2 which would be 20 minutes later, I'm happy for next goal wins.

But weird stuff like injuries or bad decisions or whatever else could happen in the last 5 minutes of normal time.

Extra time is the perfect solution, it's simply an extension of the game using the existing rules and does the job of a replay only without the hassle.

Other means like penalty shootouts are crap (although I understand why they are sometimes necessary in soccer) because it's not comparable to the actual game, and countbacks are rubbish - New Zealand didn't bat their innings with a view to scoring boundaries in case of the extremely unlikely event of a tied super over, and who is to say that scoring a single 4 followed by 3 dots should be worth more than 4 consecutive singles?

Thats true but you had the rest of the game before hand to try and win it in your own way, thats the difference and if it did not make the difference well not good enough and in my eyes fair enough. Both teams had a fair crack of the whip!!!

But in extra time you still had the rest of the game to win it your own way.

Extra time means playing a 90 minute game instead of 80 min so it gives an even longer period for weird stuff to even out and gives you an even longer period to win it your own way - your logic on this doesn't make any sense.

Yeah but you are effectively saying the last full game period is irrelevant in the finals and we are happy to roll the dice over ten minutes and are not prepared to roll up the sleeves and go again next week for fans waiting in some cases 50 years or more.

You are also saying we are going to ignore form for the whole season and because it does not suit special interests we are going to do something different on Grand Final day because a select few want a result there and then and there overriding the integrity of the game for the whole year and multiple years in the build up to try and win a premiership.

Furthermore, why should kids work towards playing AFL when the ultimate goal is to win in ten minutes of footy after, in some cases, ten plus years of toil and development?? Does that not seem a little stupid, pointless and counterproductive when a lot of the prior performance is effort based?? Is that not like asking a marathon runner, or a Melbourne Cup runner to flip a coin on the post to determine the race after a tie??? You do not see race horse owners flipping a coin when there is a dead heat on race track do you??

If Winx raced Back Caviar over 1300 metres and it was a dead heat, would you determine the winner based on which horse raised their left hoof up first??

Normally I think Gerard Wheatley is wrong about most things but I think he might be close to the pulse on this one he mentioned on AFL360 tonight.

In the aftermath of the incredible World Cup Final last night( largely due to the tie at the normal match end) the super over and winning result based on the number of boundaries is a joke!!!

Imagine if the winner of the premiership in a season was based on the number of free kicks they had throughout the season versus another team if all other avenues where tied including 5 minutes each way!!!

Given it would be terrible if the circus result last night determined an AFL premiership should we bring back the Grand Final replay??
This is a stupid analogy as it would never be used.

At the end of the day, one team has to win. The cricket system was flawed.

Play time on, if the scores are still level, first GOAL wins.

It's not flipping a coin, it's winning a 90 min game instead of 80. It's not making the rest of the game irrelevant, using your logic any time the scores are equal late in the last quarter the rest of the game is irrelevant and we are flipping a coin.

This scenario happens all the time with games. Luck of the day. I remember a game against the Hawks where we had a real big wind advantage in the 1st quarter, and they played tight, then opened up the game in the second quarter and smashed us. Gotta play to the conditions.

Yeah but you are effectively saying the last full game period is irrelevant in the finals and we are happy to roll the dice over ten minutes and are not prepared to roll up the sleeves and go again next week for fans waiting in some cases 50 years or more.

The standard game time was so closely matched that no winner could be determined so the game is extended to allow one of the teams to show an advantage.

You are also saying we are going to ignore form for the whole season and because it does not suit special interests we are going to do something different on Grand Final day because a select few want a result there and then and there overriding the integrity of the game for the whole year and multiple years in the build up to try and win a premiership.

We already do that. If we were going to take into account form for the whole season then the minor premier would be the winner and no finals system needed. If you win every single game in the regular season and all of the lead up games to the GF and fall in a heap on the day you have still lost the match and the premiership for the year.

Furthermore, why should kids work towards playing AFL when the ultimate goal is to win in ten minutes of footy after, in some cases, ten plus years of toil and development?? Does that not seem a little stupid, pointless and counterproductive when a lot of the prior performance is effort based?? If Winx raced Back Caviar over 1300 metres and it was a dead heat, would you determine the winner based on which horse raised their left hoof up first??

No if there was no way to tell the winner both Winx and Black Caviar would come first, the winnings divided equally between them and the next horse would be listed as third.

Not sure why you think ten extra minutes is not counted as effort btw ... girding up to keep going after what would have been a heart pounding last 10 minutes of the game would be an extra mental and physical challenge.

Personally I would go for extra times until a winner but if you have to have a limit golden goal not golden point.

Of course if you *have* to have a rematch then play it at the higher finishing team's home ground since we have already fulfilled the MCG GF requirement!
