Time up Tom Williams

I agree that Tom was pathetic tonight and i am not going to try and defend him, but the thing i dont understand with Eade is why hasn't he ever tried him up forward or in the ruck. Hudson was hopleless tonight as well, its not as if he would have been losing anything by making a move.

Tom had a disastrous first quarter so do something about it Rocket!

Williams has been played in the ruck (see Essendon Round 1 and Sydney Round 21 last year).

He can't play there. He got creamed. You might as well play me in the ruck.

It's starting to (if it hasn't already) look like he'll never make it.

That maybe so but he couldnt have done any worse playing there or up forward than he did as a key defender today.

From an outsider, who else do you have?

Hargrave looked on about par with him today, no calls for his guts.

I look at your back half and see flankers not CHB and FB material.

Morris and Hargrave need Lake back, fit and fired up to take the big forward. How close is he? I guess it's hard to tell...

I think it may be similar at the other end too. Without Hall, there was no target. Guys like Sherman, Stack and Grant aren't ever going to be the main man.

In general what KPP stocks do you have in the works?

He may have been terrible today (everyone was) but he has been ok this season?
His ok wouldnt get him a game any where else. This so called recruiting coup of picking him so high has been a disaster so much time into a player every one except the club can see isnt up to it. Scott Clayton so called reruiting guru failed big time.
Buddy Franklin should have been ours.

Maybe so, but Buddy was already gone by the time we picked Williams.

That year 4 of the the top 5 were great pickups (Deledio, Roughead, Griffen, and Franklin) but after Jordan Lewis at 7 it fell away quickly and they were picking up players like McQualter and Polo by pick 20. Some higher picks didn't even get a game as far as I can see.

The only way we would have got Buddy was to pass on Griffen. Easy in hindsight but Griffen was a standout junior and didn't have some of the attitude risk that was being whispered about with Buddy. (It turned out not to be a problem but it was a factor on draft day.)

I wasn't happy at the time with the selection of Williams. We would have done well to get Jordan Lewis but that's the intrigue of the draft. Everyone is much wiser a year or two later. There are so many "if only..." stories.

I'm more upset about us picking

  • Everitt 11 ahead of J.Riewoldt (13), and Frawley (12) Everitt was expected to go about pick 20-30 that year.
  • Grant (5) ahead of Rioli (9)
But it's swings and roundabouts - we have picked up some good later picks as well (eg Ward at 19 in the same draft as Grant)

He would get a game at a lot of other clubs. Good key defeners are hard to come by, and I believe Tom is a good key defender.
He had a really shit game yesterday, but so did 99% of the team. No player in the entire AFL could have stopped that onslaught, and we cant just blame it on Williams.

Also, if we do drop him, which I am sure we wont, who do suppose replaces him? Mulligan? Who is to say he will be any better? Williams is only 24. Still young in terms of a key defender.

I'm not sure other clubs would put up with his half-hearted efforts. It was the same in the final against Sydney last year, he just seemed to give up and not make a contest against Goodes, and he was doing the same last night. When there is a contested ball in the air with 5 - 6 contesting, he always seems to be the one on the ground holding a leg, knee, back, heartstring.

He is definitely not a key position player, and until the MC get that through their heads, we will continue to be exposed by big forwards. At best, he is a tall player who might be a handy 4th defender, but who doesn't like body contact. Maybe we should try him up forward or on a wing. Preferably dropped to Williamstown for mine, and then traded to GWS for a good pick next year - don't think Sheedy would be up for that though.

I agree on his attitude when things are tough. He just doesn't seem to want to try. If he can fix that, I think he should stay.
He has done really good jobs on guys like Cloke and Jonathan Brown in the past, there is no reason why he can't again.
