So how often to you test these performance modifications?

Not often, but it's a kind of a weird question .

The engine itself isn't modified, it's from a heavier, faster, newer car. Same factory, different generation.
I've basically combined 2 cars that were destined for the wreckers. One was rusty, one wasn't running. Same engine platform.
A few more parts sourced from a third car to make it work and pass engineer inspection legally.

Like putting a Holden v6 into a HR

Not in WA
When someone I know went to licensing about that swap they knocked it back
Stupid thing was they said he could swap in any inline 6
Doubt the realized just how much you can do with an RB26,2JZ or Barra

In Qld they use a vehicle weight equation to determine maximum allowable engine size.
From memory it's something like 3 x weight for NA and 2.5 x weight for turbo.
So, 1000kg car, you could put NA engine up to 3.0 litres, or turbo engine up to 2.5 litres.
Still needs engineer inspection/approval, mod plate etc before you can register it.

I thought WA allowed a lot more mods with cars, has it changed recently?

Might be recently
Years ago small block Chevs were getting put in old Holdens
I sort of guess that as these new higher tech engines started to get transplanted into lighter bodies
WAPOL has tried to put them out of reach
Putting a Coyote or LS into an older car would probably see the car impounded
Unless you are an automotive engineer and had good lawyers

QLD has all the info available online, it's quite a detailed set of guidelines with what you can do, and what supporting mods you will need.
But yeah each state is different.

I remember seeing cars in magazines 30+ years ago
Like v8's into Capri's,Escorts and LJ/LC Toranas
Almost impossible to do over here even then
