I think tinder is a cesspool, but the other apps were better when I was on them at least.

If someone wasn't giving me anything in return, I wasn't going to bother trying to drag a conversation out of them.

Even simple open-ended replies to get things rolling were fine, it didn't always require them to be an insanely witty conversationalist up-front.

If all I got was a 'thank you' type reply, with no follow-up, and nowhere to go, I'd move on unless I was extremely bored.

Tinder (or equivalent) is just a medium that enables people engage in conversation with strangers.

If I am talking to you, I can see your name is Deliverance, you support Hawthorn (red flag) and have an avatar of.. whatever that is (I could ask, that's a conversation starter). That's all I have to go on.

'Hey, nice to match with you. I can see you go for Hawthorn. How do you think they'll go this year with a new coach after such a long time under Clarkson?'

If something like that (not necessarily the most interesting conversation starter in the history of the world but something based on what's known) gets 'yeah good' or something in response then that's a pretty clear indication you don't want the conversation to continue.

Yep, agree with that. Maybe I misunderstood the original point. I thought PG was literally just getting "nice profile". At least your example, asking a few questions first up shows interest and as you said will give some idea of their interest in return.
