Stephen Tingay retires
Monday, July 30, 2001
DASHING winger Stephen Tingay has succumbed to chronic hip and buttock problems and today decided to announce his retirement.
After 12 seasons with Melbourne Stephen joined the Sydney Swans for the 2001 season after his brilliant 162 game-career with the Demons was severely disrupted by injury in later years.
Playing the first nine games of 1999 in the navy blue and red his career came to an abrupt halt, sidelined with debilitating hip and buttock problems, and despite his best endeavours to regain full fitness Stephen failed to return to the field for the Demons in ’99 or 2000.
In the lead-up to the 2001 season the Swans drafted 30 year-old Stephen through the Pre-Season Draft but despite his tremendous dedication to achieve peak fitness his body has unfortunately had the final say.
“It’s just so frustrating, I still believe I have plenty of footy in me and I hate to be bowing out this way, but the body just gets to a point where it says ‘no more’,” Stephen said.
“There were various stages during this season when I thought it was all coming together and following the operation earlier in the year (to rejoin torn muscle to his hip) my rehabilitation was going along well and there seemed to be light at the end of the tunnel.”
“However in recent times, as I’ve tried to progress my workload, I’ve started to feel a fair bit of pain again and as a consequence I’ve decided to call it quits.”
“I’ve spoken to team doctor Nathan Gibbs in the past few days and there may even be the need to go in for a further operation on my hip, it really is so frustrating, mainly because there appears to be so little I can do.”
Swans Deputy CEO – Head of Football Colin Seery said; “You’ve got to feel for Stephen, he has worked incredibly hard in an attempt to get back on the field but ultimately all the work has been in vain.”
“Certainly this is not the way Stephen deserves to go out of football considering the outstanding, albeit punctated, career he has had.”
