Couldnt the Crows bid for Viney at 19 or whatever we have?
They could.. but it really wouldn't have mattered. As long as GWS (pick #1) & GC (pick #2) didn't bid then they couldn't be forced to use pick #3 on Viney. Presumably the club with pick #25 placed a bid for him, thereby forcing Melbourne to use their 2nd round bid (#26).

Like most things AFL, it seems your understanding of F/S trading is somewhat limited, so let me explain:
  • Clubs get to nominate any players which they intend to take under the F/S rule.
  • Clubs then meet before the start of trade week, in order to bid for these F/S players.
  • If another team wishes to bid for an F/S player, then the F/S team only has to use their next pick on the player. In this case, if GC made a bid with pick #2, then Melbourne would have had to use pick #3. Failing that, Melbourne's next pick is their 2nd round pick at #26 - which is what they were forced to use.
  • If the F/S club decides not to match the original bid, then the player goes to the other club.
  • Once bidding is finalised, the successful picks are sealed and cannot be used in any trades.
  • Note also that GC/GWS compo picks cannot be used as part of the bidding process.

Reading through the last couple pages of this thread, I like the possible trade floated that gets Rohan or Parker to Geelong, Horlin-Smith to us, and Boofhead to Sydney, in some way, shape or fashion.

75 was back in 2008, thats going back a bit.
57.34 in the last two seasons at just over 1.5 a game isnt anything spectacular and lower than his career average.
Even Tip$ averages are better than that and we all know how dodgy he has been in front of goals.
Do you think he is going to kick bags of 50+ a season for the next 3 years as a Crow?
He only played 11 games in 2011, largely due to injury. That accounts for his low tally in that season...

Kurt has to agree to the trade.
How likely is it that he'd refuse a trade to Brisbane though, if they come up with something attractive to Adelaide, where Sydney can't? How is this unlike the Clarke situation last year, where his preferred destination (Freo) was ruled out early due to a lack of trade options, thus seeing him traded to Melbourne.

I'm guessing that Brisbane is still 3rd on his preferred destinations list - behind Sydney and GC. Provided they're willing to offer him a decent salary (and by all accounts they're desperate to land him), I can't see him objecting too strenuously.

Issue is he's been spending less and less time as a key forward and more time as an undersized ruckman/utility. Play him exclusively as a key forward and I think we would see him get back to at least 50+ goals a year. I think Walker will develop more and more into your classic Carey style CHF. He has elite endurance, his foot skills are sublime and he's no mug when the ball hits the deck. Add in Roughead as a side kick and the two could rotate extremely effectively between FF and CHF. Would probably then have to play either Jenkins/McKernan as 2nd ruck/3rd tall forward, putting us on the taller side, but not really that tall.
Fair enough, cant comment on every game he has played in the last couple of years so I will take your word for it.
I wouldnt be upset if that was what we got for Tip$ but I would hope we do better or at least a first rounder as well.

Yep understand that, Vader. I was purely going on stats alone. Its been pointed out he has played less forward so that accounts for lower averages. I know he is a good player and would fit in with the Crows but he has to want to play for us or we just get another Tippett.

No, if he gets injured, they have to at least pay him out (or come to an agreement for similar). The Fev debacle was more recent, but I'm pretty sure Kouta missed a lot of games through injury, right when his contract was at its highest.
and this payout still forms part of the clubs cap even if the player is not a listed player?

Sounds pretty simple, GC rated Jack Martin ahead of Jack Viney. Will be interesting to see whether there's any further dealing between GC and Melbourne which might explain GC's apparent generosity... or whether it was a straight out business decision.

And Iva, fwiw, Melbourne have said they would have used 3 on Viney anyway, so GC were never going to get him regardless...
Thanks a1118868, I guess we will never know, but I suspect that Melbourne would be saying that now to mend any burnt bridges with young Jack

AFC, AFL say no clause in contract

Hutchy: I don't know.....herp
The AFC has said there is no clause, the AFL has said there is no clause, Tippett's manager has said there is no clause. Nothing short of actually showing the contract seems to work, and even then...

57.34 in the last season and a half. He had a major injury when he only kicked 16 in a season... You first said he was an inaccurate kick. That was the whole point of me putting up his returns for the last 5 or 6 years.

No one has said anything about bags of 50 per season or anything else. BTW Tippett has only managed 50 goals in a season once. Roughead has had 3 x 50 or more goal seasons playing alongside Franklin. Would have reached it again this season had he not played so much in the ruck (more hit outs per game and total than Tippett)

In his first year yes, heavily back ended contract I believe, they're expecting a few players to retire over the next couple of years.
I would have thought they'd be expecting people like Hannebury, Jack, Jetta and co to also be asking for rather large pay rises too.

On the off chance Tippett does make it to thew PSD - can we afford to redraft him?

Can we fit his salary into the 2013 salary cap?

If so, we should let it known, we can afford him and we will redraft him. Even if that means he sits out.

If we get Roughead for Tippett we are laughing all the way to the bank. We would do this in a heartbeat especially considering that Roughy can play forward, back and as a back up ruckman and he is only 25 (same age as the culture Kurt)
I agree Stiffy, Roughead for Tippett would be a perfect replacement. Roughie can do everything Tippett can - play as a key forward & relieve in the ruck ... & also has the added benefit of being able to play as a key defender if need be (which solves another problem should we have an injury like we did with Talia).

Roughie didn't look right during the finals - was this form, injury or not happy with Clarkson. Worth enquiring, because Hawks may be looking to use Bailey/Hale as ruck/forwards around Buddy & Gunstan.. & may be looking to strengthen their backline.

Yep I have stood corrected. Still feel he is not a one for one trade, need something else to sweeten it.
