After Danger signed for 600k I think Adelaide told Kurts manager that he will need to take a paycut to remain at Adelaide.
I do not think Kurt or his manager liked this.

Sorry Fred - that was in reference to Marty Mattner years ago being unhappy with Neil Craig. Not present day dealings.

I understand all of that but how did Sydney know he was unhappy?

Didn't Sydney renegotiate an increase in his contract as an extra intensive as well?

Or was that just cotton wool to hide the Neil Craig issue at the time?

Marty did not want to leave Adelaide and was under contract. Was advised he would not be guaranteed a spot, Sydney were interested and was encouraged to go to Sydney and meet with Roos. He left reluctantly that's why most are pleased it has worked out so well for him.

This is correct and this is the angle we need to explore.

We need to find a good player who fits our needs and convince them they are unhappy at their current club and then arrange a trade. Who? I don't know yet.

Or we simply hold off one year and go for Jeremy Cameron by offering him a 3 year deal worth close to $2,000,000 and see the GWS match that.

He is from Dartmoor and that is closer to Adelaide than it is Melbourne.

yeh, but we have to spend most of it, so it's going to have to go somewhere. the obvious answer, if we can't bring in anyone new, is to re-negotiate existing contracts and front end them. if danger is on $500k per year over 3 years, then bring $400k forward to 2013. i don't know if human nature will ultimately get the better of someone though and having banked $900k in the first year to then earn $300k/year after could result in reduced output. doubt danger would be a candidate, but you'd think some percentage of players would be.

Not saying he is good or anything but Dawes fits a similar bill at Collingwood as Mattner did. A little bit on the outer at a good club. Adelaide didn't rate Mattner that highly obviously and he has played some very good football with Sydney. I bet Sydney could turn Dawes into a very serviceable player.

True, with 92.5% of the salary cap needing to be use - we will have to increase some players wages.

Personally, I'd prefer they increase 20 player x $50,000 (or whatever they need to spend to reach that threshold) rather than giving one player a huge lump sum payment by front loading it.

as the day goes on im actually really excited about what could get for tip.

surely with the reports of big dollars floating around we have to get something pretty good,

if we get peanuts ill be filthy but until a trade is done im quite optimistic, we played some of our best footy this year with kurt out the team.

7.5% of the salary cap is $600K, so it's not like we would have to allocate the whole $800K to remain between the cap range (92.5% - 100%).

"There's no time frame on it, but we don't have until Christmas. Trade week begins next Monday … it would seem logical to have something in place prior to then," Blucher said.
Not a bright bloke, is Blucher from the sounds of things. Made a mess of Simon Black's contract recently and may have injected some bad blood between the two parties.

I think those players are slowly being weeded out of the team...

I know what you're saying but that 3rd tall forward role isn't a major need for us. Side-note: can Dawes play as a defender?

With Jenkins, Johnston, Smack and Walker - that area of the field is covered

If Dawes can play as a defender, maybe he could be a useful recruit but I feel we need to look at a speedy forward pocket or 3rd tall defender first.

We may as well pay the full amount though. It's not like it builds up over the years. If we don't go after anybody this year, we should definitely be paying off as much of the existing contracts as we can.

Same mate; Talia, Tex and Smith - those type of guys who wouldn't be on big pay packets just yet, but have performed exceptionally well for us.

If we can't get a gun, don't waste time getting a couple of 'average' players - reward the guns we have.

Maybe in 1997 mate... Next year's cap is 9.13 mil. If Kurt was going to completely max us out, we are at 8.33 mil - a touch over 91%.

We need to spend at least another $115k odd - but that shouldn't be too much. Even if we replace Kurt with a new draftee, that takes care of about 60-odd... Luke Thompson hasn't signed yet, maybe he is in line for a windfall!

Like I said above, don't just waste the money for the sake of it. Get to 92.5% and try to land a big fish once we find one worth landing.

Quick edit....edit mate.....edit

Edit: Opps....too late.

anywhere other than a queensland club and he's just chasing money. that's all it is really. his family doesn't live in sydney, they don't live in victoria.

800k here is not bad coin at all. he's not even worth anything like that to us. to offer him 900k-1m is absurd. for what he's actually done so far. halve it and you're closer to the figure. plus he's really one concussion away from retirement (don't forget he had a fractured neck when he first came over too.) if you don't want in, then good riddance. a player is always expendable. especially when they want more than their worth and aren't your best player.

The graveyard is full of irreplaceable people.
