Maybe in 1997 mate... Next year's cap is 9.13 mil. If Kurt was going to completely max us out, we are at 8.33 mil - a touch over 91%.

We need to spend at least another $115k odd - but that shouldn't be too much. Even if we replace Kurt with a new draftee, that takes care of about 60-odd... Luke Thompson hasn't signed yet, maybe he is in line for a windfall!

Like I said above, don't just waste the money for the sake of it. Get to 92.5% and try to land a big fish once we find one worth landing.

The new draftees are factored in. You are correct in saying, the main beneficiary looks to be Luke Thompson.

Jars just on MMM saying again Kurt has already signed with Sydney. Also interesting was Roo's earlier comment about how Kurt doesn't like the pressure on him to perform - wtf?

We're just being wasteful if we don't use 100% of the cap in every year that we're above Melbourne standard. Front loading and redistributing the contracts of Danger, Sloane, Walker, Mackay is still good use of our cap because it leaves more room for next year. Extending the contracts of Jacobs, Talia and Smith will likely also be a priority.

Is it even possible to redistribute the total contract payments in that way? I have no idea but it seems strange if you can. My point was - don't 1) go out and resign these guys to new deals with big payrises or 2) go out and desperately pay overs to mediocre players, just because we can.

Hold fire, keep as much cap space as we can going forward to get someone worth getting. Of course, if it's possible to rework existing contracts so they are front loaded, in turn giving us more cap space in future years, we should do that.

What I don't want us to do is go out and throw 400k a year at Tyson Goldsack because we want to be aggressive in trade week.

If we don't go after anybody this year, restructure existing player contracts so we pay them off quicker and have room for going after somebody next year, or the year after. There is no point in paying the minimum of the salary cap unless that's all the club can afford. It makes no sense at all.

That's pretty funny since his main motivation now seems to be the $. He wants high six figures, but doesn't want the pressure to perform on him?

If Dawes can play as a defender, maybe he could be a useful recruit but I feel we need to look at a speedy forward pocket or 3rd tall defender first.

BUTTON's been a bit cruel, but Dawes is definitely not for me, Alex. He has looked a very very ordinary footballer in the past few months. Zero interest IMO.

A Ruckman, an outside mid with pace, and a key defender would be on my shopping list. If a goal kicking forward pocket was available, I wouldn't knock that back either, but that would be my 4th preference.

I agree, a key forward (as I said) isn't high on our list of priorities this off season and I asked if he could play as a defender as we do need a key defender.

malthouse just said then on 5aa, if he wants to go to melbourne they will get involved

The Suns would have to be A holes to not put up a fair trade and try to get him in the draft, All clubs should act fairly in trade negotiations as at some point the boot will be on the other foot. Caddy pick and Gorringe may well be the deal as others have stated.

You are kidding right? Was that a pig that just flew past?

You guys are no different to any other club...just a matter of perspective....are you the Screwer or the Screwee?

GC and GWS are going to be especially vulnerable over the next few years. They may not want to give other clubs any extra motivation to try and screw them over. That said, they probably won't give a shit.

No we didn't. Your coach didn't want to trade him to us (Port was the top with us at the time). That same moronic coach let him go into the draft for zero return.

Mate, our preference was not to trade with you because you were being unreasonable with what you offered (Heath Scotland and a third round pick, and at the time Scotland was a fringe player). I respect Collingwood for trying to take advantage of a rival, but respect Port even more for not caving in. And yes, Choco might be a moron, but what does it say that he led Port to a premiership 6 years before Malthouse led Collingwood to theirs?

What's happening now with Tippett could be very similar to the Stevens situation - Crows are a top 4 team losing one of their best players, Collingwood are interested but have no decent picks and history says they wont part with one of their established players. Unless the compensation is fair, I'd be doing everything I could to keep him from going to a club that I might face off against in a prelim or even GF in the next 3 years such as Collingwood or even Sydney for that matter. But at least Sydney have a history of trading fairly.

Sydney wont be able to give us anything. They have absolutely nothing to give us!..... unless they give us Jetta...... very much doubt that.

Exactly, we honestly don't have a surplus of 'wanted' players. Eg talented enough to get into another sides top 26 or uncontracted.
