"You absolutely never give anything away for free in business. Port did it, and look at them."

Implying that losing Stevens for nothing has left them where they are now.

They played in two grand finals in the four years after losing Stevens, winning a premiership in the process. It didn't hurt them at all.

If Collingwood had been offering pick 22 (Cameron Thurley), do you think their fortunes would be any different?
Haha fair enough, I wasnt specific enough, but I mean look at Port. The decision to just let a quality player walk for nothing is seen as one of their best. In my opinion, it shows they weren't smart enough to get the maximum out of that situation. Ironic because they won the flag the following year, but I reckon thats because they had a great list, with or without Stevens (just like the 2013 AFC). Who knows, its a decision that may have cost them at the trade table in the years since? Its all guess work.

I guess I got carried away with kicking Port. Any opportunity etc. etc.

This is exactly the way to play it...but the AFC have no balls, no vision, no aggression....I really can't believe that we have Noble etc in charge...they probably earn 250k a year yet they have no clue...how the **** did they get the job?
I would be very surprised if we're not doing exactly that.

Whether they were a good team or not didn't make a difference prior to Stevens leaving, infact they should've been a better team with him but they weren't, without him...

It could be just a coincidence but it might also not be. It turned out well for them in the end, so how can you say that they did the wrong thing?
Umm... what?

really? and what evidence do you have?

um the crows keep stressing that they are dealing with sydney ONLY...wtf? what possible good is that doing? how is that making sydney give us more? it's the most piss weak play they could make

their biggest play so far is to say that they'll put tippett into the PSD but quickly following up with the comment that they're hopeful a deal with sydney can be done and that they're only dealing with sydney...could they be anymore dumber????

Talking with Rohan/Jetta/etc and offering them big money to come home to us is dealing only with Sydney.

I agree the PSD option should have been given more public support by the club, but that's a different issue. I said I'd be surprised if we're not offering big money to players and asking them to tell their clubs they want to come to Adelaide and only Adelaide. As we've seen, it's clearly the way to ensure you get a player under value. So rather than whinging that it's happening to us, let's do it to someone else. And I'll bet we are.

We are starting to turn on ourselves! C'mon! Wait and see what Noble can make of a bad situation before eating him.

First I've heard of Kurt (rumoured) having depression. If it's true, I respect his decision to change his life up a bit, even if it is at the expense of our future club ambitions.

It was in the other thread (the one for news and rumours but no discussion). I have no idea if it's founded, but it would explain a lot of it is.

Like I said, I've had a lot of experience with dealing with and working with people with depression and it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

In his first crack at it, he got us Crouch. And Josh Jenkins.

I like Jenkins but this guy got us Crouch.

I cant wait to revist this...
I can only assume the long wait is because Adelaide laughed at Sydney's offer went through a few options and said "get back to us when you have a real offer." Sydney is either organising something to do the deal or sitting around waiting for us to call off negotiations.

OK, simply put;

Good team + Stevens = Better team, 0 Premierships

Good team - Stevens = Good team, 1 Premiership

Therefore pinning their success in 2004 on just being a 'good team' can't be right. There had to be some other factor that made a difference that they lacked earlier when they were arguably a better team, with Stevens.

I'm glad we have so many experts here who know exactly what the club is doing.. Exactly the talks that have been going on etc..

Hell, they had no idea last year either when they grabbed Crouch and Brown..
Jenkins and pick 41 for pick 31..

They've had 2 significant players walk out on them since Nick Stevens.

Josh Carr went to Freo for picks 11, 27 and 45.
Shaun Burgoyne went to Hawthorn for picks 9 and 16 (and lots of other late pick juggling)

We will never know what would have happened if they'd gone down a different path with Nick Stevens, but those two deals look like they've done pretty well out of similar situations to what we're facing here. I truly believe sending Kurt to PSD would not be cutting off our nose to spite our face. It would be copping a small short term loss (as posted above, pick 23 is hardly a guaranteed gun) in order to ensure that faced with a similar situation in the future, clubs will take us seriously at the trade table.

I'd rather nothing now and a first rounder in 2 years next time we're in this situation, than pick 22 now and pick 22 again in 2 years.

The first I heard of depression was on SEN by someone unrelated to the whole thing, who just mentioned it in passing like "and if he wasn't enjoying his time in Adelaide he could be missing his family, his mates, be depressed and looking to get home" or something along those lines. I dont know if thats where it started but it wasnt stated as fact at that point.

I think you need to disclude the first couple of years when we had concessions to build a list. I'll see if I can be bothered doing some analysis on this and start another thread, so as not to derail this one. It's an interesting topic and I must admit to working on gut feel a bit, but the numbers dont seem to add up to me. Happy to be wrong, or at least debate it with you at a later date :thumbsu:
Fair enough, I can't remember when some guys came back, but I agree you can't include anyone in our initial concessions. (such as they were). Happy to debate it over the summer, should be a lot more enjoyable than watching the Redbacks:p.

The relevance to this thread I think though, is that there are a lot of widely held opinions on here that just don't bare up to close scrutiny and the go home factor in any trading we do seems to me to be one such view. Tippett being a hack that we are better off without is another as is that our recruiting staff don't do a good job and never have. Clearly Tippett is a great player (why would there be nearly 10,000 posts here otherwise and Sydney offering $4m) and our recruiting staff have generally done a great job (again any fair statistical analysis would support this). I mean never having a top 6 pick but making 7 Prelim finals in 21 years would clearly show this.

That's what I really like about this thread. The guys on here that always critisize after the fact now have a good chance to put their views forward before anything has been done, and if it turns out that we stuff it up and they suggested another course then at least they will have some credability when they whine later. BTW the wide cross section of views on here about what we should do should make us all realise how hard it is to run a club like this and keep everyone happy. Whatever they do there will be plenty of critics.

Getting married this Friday. My money is on a deal being struck during the ceremony when I can't/shouldn't be on tapatalk... Damnit

Not sure I'd want it to ruin the day anyway.
If you didn't want to ruin our big day, then why did you schedule your wedding for the same day?:D

Can someone explain how the $figure ($1m?....$600K?) that Tippett has signed for with Sydney sits with the procedure of the PSD? Is the contractural amount lodged with AFL in someway prior to if/when he is placed in draft? ie is the 2013 money fixed in terms of other interested clubs and cannot be re-stated (higher) to force-ff/scare away GWS etc? And if the contract is for 4 years for $x, does any new club have to provide a 4 year like deal, or just match the 2013 offer? All seems unfair to the point of draft manipulation to me.

Yep, if we can't be sure Sydney won't get him for free in the draft, we would look foolish not taking 22.

BUT, if he can only stipulate his terms in the draft at what Sydney can pay him this year, which will be substantially less than 1mill, then absolutely talk to the other clubs about our intentions, make certain they are poised to swoop and cut him adrift in the draft. That would be infinitely more satisfying than pick 22 and infinitely better for the club in the long run than having pick 22 and the reputation of a feeder club you can have your merry way with.
I disagree, caving for a poor pick opens the door IMO, what's to stop others seeing this as a weakness. If a player considering leaving is worried that the club may put him in the draft instead of giving him exactly what he wants (as in the Tippett case) he may be less inclined to go. Only my 2 cents.

Somewhat conflicting messages regarding Tippets contract and the PSD from Sydney fans. Say his first two years are 600K each, because that's all they currently have, but they can price everyone else out of the PSD when Tips nominates a $1 million salary? And if he goes into the draft, surely there's plenty of teams who can fit in 600K and in 2 years time would have cleared off enough salary to still afford him?

To enter the PSD a player can nominate a minimum contract to avoid being picked up by a club that will be unable to meet the players salary requirements. Its intended purpose is to avoid a player being picked up by a team and forced to play on a minimum wage. It was never intended to be a way for a player to manipulate the draft.

In this instance Tippett will try to price himself out of any of the clubs in front of Sydney, however if Sydney (or any club) pick him they must meet his minimum stated contract. If he puts a million bucks on his head, Sydney have to sign him on a million dollar contract.
