And so it came to pass.

Kurt did leave the AFC, he did return home to play on his shiny new blue surfboard and Adelaide did receive a mid to late first round draft pick. However the Noble one said that we had done a good deal because we could have received nothing and the Sunny ones said that they made a last minute decision to offer Kurt a contract because he was home sick and after all he was a Gold Coast lad at heart.

And as we speak the AFC are scouring the elite schools of Australia for the next episode in this sad and sorry tale.

It would seem entirely outside of the spirit of the rule for it to actually end up causing us to lose a second player to an expansion club for nothing, or less than he's worth.
It also seemed entirely outside the spirit of the rule for the AFL to amend the Father-Son rule to definitively prevent us from getting Gibbs.

Not a stretch, it's a safeguard to ensure that GC/GWS couldn't stonewall clubs and force players into the PSD for a freebie...
I understand why it exists, but the exception is if we agree to a trade. If he goes in the PSD we get nothing so there is no trade. It doesn't say we can let him get picked up on the PSD.

Out of curiosity, what would Adelaide demand/want from the Swans? Be realistic because obviously the buying power is held by the Swans as he is uncontracted and GC would be pushing for KT in the PSD.

I don't get how gws can't take him in the PSD because they took Davis, but gcs can even though they took bock

^^ I found that too but yeah, it says TRADE.. Nothing about they can be taken in the draft with the other clubs permission..

The other thing is that Davis left last year.. How many drafts does it go on for that GWS can't take one of our players in a draft because they took Davis as an uncontracted player?
Maybe because they have a 2 year window to take uncontracted players, it covers 2 years also?
Or this year, they should really be able to take players of ours you would think..
Either could only take 1 uncontracted player unless the target club agreed to allow another player to go in the first 2 seasons of the expansion clubs. GC are out of that now and GWS has this draft to target players.

Can't see us offering up $kurt and hoping Vlad gives us a 1st round pick as compo.

AFL probably didn't want it happening.. Clubs could be pricks with players that asked for trades if they couldn't get a decent trade (like possibly now) and force them to the PSD, then just agree with GWS to take the player, knowing they will end up at a place that most probably really don't want to be - GWS..

Jesse White for Tippett and our AFL licence (and maybe a third rounder chucked in).

Sounds fair. :thumbsu:

Yeah, they could just wait a year and do it then instead.

There are things we can do.

We can tuck away 5 X $1 million and make an open offer to the top 5 kids at the Gold Coast Suns. Even if we don't get one of them over the line we can cause maximum disruption. There are 15 clubs in the AFL waiting to cannibalise GWS and GCS, we have to make it 16. Whilst we might laugh at Eddie declaring a Jihad on any club that pursues any of their elite players, how many have they lost.

It's time to stop applying the the best behaved club award every year. Get even and get ruthless.

They have a 2-year window for signing uncontracted players, so yes, the prohibition against taking a second Adelaide player lasts for those 2 years - 2011 & 2012.
Picking someone in the PSD is not the same as being traded
It was specifically spelled out in the AFL Player Rules that the same rules applied to the 2011 PSD. I can't see anything in the AFL Player Rules covering the 2012 PSD - but I'm assuming the same rule applies:
36.11 Participation in Pre-Season Draft - 2011
(b) WSFC may not select a Player under Rule 36.11(a) who nominated for the Pre Season Draft under Rule 5.2(a) if that Player was most recently on the List of a Club from which WSFC has:
(i) Listed an uncontracted Player under Rule 36.7; or
(ii) selected a Nominated Player at the 2011 National Draft .
unless such Club agrees to the selection
(c) If WSFC selects a Player pursuant to this Rule 36.11, the Club that most recently Listed the Player shall be entitled to a compensatory selection as determined by the AFL pursuant to Rule 36.7.
In other words.. if the club agrees, then they are able to take a 2nd player via the PSD (or they were last year - I assume the same applies this year).

36.12 Uncontracted Players - 2012

WSFC may by no later than the date and time nominated by the General Manager – Football Operations include on its Primary List up to one Listed Player from each other Club, excluding Gold Coast Football Club, (or more than one if the other Club agrees) provided that:
(d) such Player is uncontracted for the 2013 AFL Season; and
(e) WSFC has not included a Player on its Primary List from that Club under the mechanisms set out above in (a), (b) and (c) (unless the other Club agrees); and
(f) WSFC may not list more than 16 Players in total via this Rule in combination with the mechanisms sets out in (a), (b) and (c) above.

Could the bolded line (if it works as I'm posting from my phone), be the reason that GWS cannot sign Tippett as an uncontracted player?

According to the dates listed on the AFL website, the deadline is;

October 19, 2pm - Deadline for GWS Giants to pre-list balance of any uncontracted players under List Establishment rules.

Does that mean they can't take any uncontracted players in the PSD? (Which is mid-December)

EDIT: I only mention it because there's no mention of GWS participation in the PSD this year. Though all the other rules regarding uncontracted players also mention a cutoff date, but list a rule regarding PSD participation. Though the logical thing would be that the 2011 PSD rules apply to the 2012 one, which I expect is the rules. Just looking for an explanation why Noble might have answered that way.

This is correct and this is the angle we need to explore.

We need to find a good player who fits our needs and convince them they are unhappy at their current club and then arrange a trade. Who? I don't know yet.
You don't think Harper has been working on this angle for the last 6 months or more, working on the assumption that Tippett was going to leave?

Out of curiosity, what would Adelaide demand/want from the Swans? Be realistic because obviously the buying power is held by the Swans as he is uncontracted and GC would be pushing for KT in the PSD.
Why would you ask supporters? We aren't Adelaide.

Could the bolded line (if it works as I'm posting from my phone), be the reason that GWS cannot sign Tippett as an uncontracted player?
Umm.. no. PSD is a different kettle of fish to signing of uncontracted players. However, both have the clause which says that GWS can take a 2nd player from the same club if the club agrees.

In other words.. if the club agrees, then they are able to take a 2nd player via the PSD (or they were last year - I assume the same applies this year).
Well that's a relief, and, at least means there's an avenue we could potentially explore.
Good find.

It was intended purely hypothetically. I was wondering what your main needs are.
Don't worry about him, he's a tool to just about everybody at the moment.

I understand why it exists, but the exception is if we agree to a trade. If he goes in the PSD we get nothing so there is no trade. It doesn't say we can let him get picked up on the PSD.
If he gets picked up by GWS in the PSD then we receive compensation for him, the same as we did when Bock signed with GC and Davi$ signed with GWS. We don't get anything though, if any team other than GWS picks him up.

They have a 2-year window for signing uncontracted players, so yes, the prohibition against taking a second Adelaide player lasts for those 2 years - 2011 & 2012.

And if I'm reading that right the AFL sets the compensation. That would ensure we get a 1st rd pick as compensation, at least equal to the compensation we received for Davis you would assume. So GC have to trade assuming GWS come to the party and threaten to pick him.

Fair enough. Interesting that they included a section for 2012 uncontracted players but not a PSD section.

Looks like the usual poor reporting by media outlets which seems all too common these days...
