Realistically it's more than 11 games given he's going to need some games to get match fit. Then he generally plays one decent game in 3, so that's alot money for 4 good games

Surely he wouldn't, we could sue him or the AFL could fine or suspend him further. Wasn't Trigg served with a NO Talk policy from the AFL? Tippett would have also been given one as well

I thought Trigg gave a press conference - Im sure I seen his lips moving.

WHEN the Sydney Swans call out - as we all expect - Kurt Tippett's name on Tuesday, they will be adding it to the list of successful big men recruited to the Harbour City.

For a club that regularly struggled to attract top talent when it was still based in South Melbourne (one factor behind its ultimate relocation to Sydney), the Swans have since proven astute decision-makers when it comes to recruitment.

It really started in Sydney with the signing of Tony Lockett ahead of the 1995 season, the AFL's all-time leading goalkicker who was probably the biggest and best addition to the club's list.

Even though Lockett was already 29 and had 898 goals from 183 games with St Kilda under his belt when he moved to Sydney, he is best remembered as a superstar Swan.

Lockett helped turn around the club's floundering fortunes on and off the field, kicking them into the 1996 Grand Final – where they lost to North Melbourne – and ultimately being named in the Swans' Team of the Century.

The next big man to prove a hit in Sydney was another ex-Saint, Barry Hall, who was recruited at the age of 25 in 2002 – a season that would end with Paul Roos at the helm.

Under Roos, the Swans implemented the infamous "no dickheads" recruiting policy, which also led to players such as ruck trio Jason Ball, Darren Jolly and Shane Mumford coming on board.

It has proven an incredibly successful policy, helping the club to two premierships and only one missed finals appearance in the past decade.

It has also caught the attention of other sporting clubs and codes around the world.

"I'm really impressed with their whole attitude that you can be recruited for the Sydney Swans, but you don't become a 'Blood' until you reach certain standards," former New Zealand rugby union assistant coach Wayne Smith said ahead of attending a Swans training session back in 2009.

"We've got a lot of traditions and customs and bone-deep values associated with the All Blacks, so there's some synergy there."

If a quick poll of Tippett's former Adelaide teammates was conducted, it may result in some questioning whether the Swans have deviated from their policy.

The Crows were reportedly shocked and unimpressed when Tippett told them of his intention to leave via text message and reversed his earlier declaration he wanted to return home to Queensland.

But the 25-year-old is another key forward who seems set to play out his prime years in the Swans' red and white.

And from the Swans' perspective, there is a key difference in chasing Tippett compared to their pursuit of Lockett, Hall or Jolly.

This time, the reigning premiers are already at the top of the pile, rather than fighting to join the competition's elite.

But, as with all players recruited to the Swans, Tippett's reputation as a match-winning goal kicker will count for nought when he moves north.

"He'd be a great addition, but he'd really have to earn the respect and trust of the players who have been there for a long time," club great Michael O'Loughlin told AFL.com.au earlier this month.

"That's something everyone has to earn who pulls on the red and white."

Ah, perhaps that is their punishment in all this? Despite all that they now know of Tippett and his family, they are forced to select him regardless of whether they changed their mind or not. Delicious!

I doubt they'd have changed their mind. They get their man without giving up anything, with a salary reduction in the second year of a 2 year contract. If I was Sydney I'd wait to see how he goes next year before extending as well... it's not like he's going to go anywhere else after all this

If it all goes tips up then Sydney is only locked in for 1 year at a super high price. Not nearly the opportunity for lolz that 4-6 years offered.

I agree with aiof though, this isn't Sydney's "fault". They're just doing what they've been allowed to do, just as every club would and should.
