Ok, so I am moving overseas in April and am desperately looking to sell my car. Only problem is, I know absolutely nothing about cars, nor have I sold one before.

It is a silver Holden Omega Commodore 2008 with registration and getting a road worthy tomorrow. After that I will clean it all up and get it ready for sale.

What is the best way about selling it quickly without getting completely ripped off? Is carsales.com my best option? I am happy to sell it cheaper than normal to hurry up the process.

Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated as I am clueless!

carsales.com.au is probably your best bet. have a quick google find out the average price of similar types of cars with the same amount of K's and rego.
undercut them by a grand, make sure you take plenty of photo's and look at descriptions of other vehicles to give you an idea of what to write.

but, don't mention you need a quick sale. thats just saying you want to ripped off.

Spray tyre shine on those tyres.

Gloss em up.

Be careful with the roadworthy - only valid for a month once you get it so if the car doesn't sell in that time you need a new one.

Carsales is super easy.

Pics of all sides of vehicle, pics of interior and pics under the hood
If it has a specific probs then list them and take photos.
Make sure you have the cars history and state that you do
If its had work done then list whats been done

Price wise do a search on what they are going for and price accordingly

The people who come to look at it will attempt to find faults in order to try and drop the price. Make sure you are aware of any superficial damage etc and point out that you know of that you already know and that is the reason the car is priced cheaper than average.

Full service history helps. Tell them its done mostly country miles.

The people who come to look at it will attempt to find faults in order to try and drop the price..
Not entirely correct. People look for faults because they don't want to buy a lemon. Lemons cost money to fix.

Make sure you get contact info of the first few who made offers, even if its below what you want.

Time and time again I've seen people rejecting those initial offers only to find later they were the highest bidders!

Look up the value on redbook.com.au.

Search on carsales.com.au and compare the values on comparable cars for sale.

Set a price around what comparable cars are going for and expect to get $1-2k less.

I don't know what a 2008 Commodore is worth off the top of my head but I'd guess about $10k. Commodores aren't exactly unique so if there are 50 for sale for $10k why would someone specifically buy yours? If you are happy to sell it cheaper then maybe list it for $9k. If you go at the cheap end of the scale you will get the cheap end of the people scale with people offering all sorts of ridiculous prices, so I wouldn't advertise it too much cheaper than what's on offer.

Since you are moving overseas don't list that in your ad or tell prospective buyers. Just tell them you're downsizing to a smaller car etc. or they'll think they've got you up against a wall and will lowball you.

If you live in a larger city I would also suggest listing the car on Gumtree as well as carsales.

I sold a car last year and surprisingly most of the inquiries and subsequent offers I received came from gumtree.

My advice being a Commodore sell it a bit under what its worth. You are going to have a lot of competition and if you want it gone then accept a small loss.

Huge thanks to everyone for their advice, didn't expect this much input, so really appreciate it.

I got the road worthy certificate which cost me $100, but thankfully the car didn't have any problems so that's all it cost.
Have taken the following photos and am going to list it tomorrow, but I'm really undecided on what price I should list it as? Keeping in mind I'm looking for a quicker sale and the car is perfectly fine apart from a small scratch above the back left wheel.

Go to Kmart and get a fabric car shampoo and clean the seats...I can see stains on them from the pics.

http://www.redbook.com.au/cars/rese...-commodore-sv6-ve-manual-my09/SPOT-ITM-232134

Advertise it at $9999.00 and be prepared to take it down to $93999.00 and STOP.

Deal in 9's.

Its done not too bad on kms for its age.

Looks clean and dent free.

It is a perfect car for a 'P' plate HOON....be prepared to have P Plate Hoons turn up with Dad or Bro or Mate or all of them in tow.

Look good with mags and lowered!
