Tivendale for Welsh

Welsh had a horror season. I don't want Tivendale either but it may be best to trade Welsh before he is further exposed. Cole for Welsh might be the best way to go.

I won't come down too hard on you, but only because you are a newbie. :D
But seriously mate, that's the worst thing I've ever read. This season, his "horror" season, Andrew Welsh was so much better than Cole will ever be it isn't even funny.

Look, I'm not married to getting Cole either (although he barely played this year so his recent form is a moot point) but this club has a habit of hanging on to average players for way too long - look at Bolton. Welsh is average. He is tough but not fast or skilled and gets beaten way too often. There comes a time when you have to ask if a player is good enough to play in a premiership side and Welsh is not. If Essendon is serious about improving over the next few years, they have to start making the hard calls.

When did Welsh get beaten this season?

He beat his opponent most weeks, averaged 17 disposals.

The only part of his game that was missing was his run and drive from half back. But a knee injury will do that to you.

Good one. I'm not calling for Welsh's head but as an intelligent football watcher, I can't abide all the sentimental rubbish about him being a gun. He is average and the sooner you realise that Essendon needs to turn over a lot of its list, the better. This club has probably been the most inactive in history when it comes to trading for established names who aren't at the end of theior careers. Or maybe we should just aspire to the same level of mediocrity of the last few seasons.

This is no longer 1999-2001. We have a lot of bad players. Bullen, Henneman, Haynes etc. ned to be delisted and the better ones like Welsh need to be traded - if we can get something worthwhile for them...

You said he was reguarly beaten. Fact is he wasn't. Which is proven by the fact you can only think of one match where his opponent got the better of him. He beats his opponent and finds plenty of the footy. He is actually 4th at the club for disposals in 2005.

I never said he was a gun. But he is better than average. He has stood tall for us since day one. Young players look up to him. Damian Hardwick was an 'average' footballer, but a very valuable member of a Premiership side. Welsh is cut from the same cloth.

And the club is also one of the most successful in history. You don't break the bank to get in players from elsewhere. You develop your own and Welsh is one of our own.

Won't disagree with you there.

Tivendale isn't worthwhile.
We traded well respected, club leaders and good clubman in Carey and Bradbury. It took us years to recover.

I don't want Tivendale either. He is rubbish.

Times are changing. Essendon has, admirably, tried to make it on its own - no handouts, no concessions at draft time. But the facts are that we're struggling. For every, Stanton and Laycock and Bradley (all of whom are quality), our rivals are getting Cooneys and Griffens and Deledios. Where are we going to find our next superstar?

Hird and Fletcher have one, maybe two years left. We either try and pinch one in the next year or two or start looking a long way down the track.

I don't hate Welsh but he did have a poor year. Forget his disposals, he is not damaging enough when he has the ball for it to matter. If you look at those who finished behind him in the Creigton (he finished 13th), they are either fringe players or were injured. Welsh still played 21 times - and please, don't compare him to Hardwick.

In the end, Welsh probably won't be traded - but it's due to the increasingly small numbers of good players on the market. If there were any good, young midfielders around, I think Essendon should move heaven and earth to get them.

Then please tell me how Cole will be better than him?

Look, it sounds like we are going to get Cole anyway - and I would rather lose a Welsh or Richards than a draft pick. Cole just strikes me as a talented player who will provide our sluggish side with some much-needed dash. A change of club will do him the world of good.

I rate Cole, you don't. Time will tell.
