In relation to James Gwilt being drafted from the EFL rather than the normal trend of TAC Cup, VFL, SANFL, VAFA, WAFL etc. My understanding was that players could not be drafted from local competitions and they had to go thru the correct chanels of playing in one of the above mentioned comps.

So my question is how did he get drafted from the EFL??

Players must register with the AFL if they wish to be considered in any of the drafts. I believe that they also must play at least one game with a club in an affiliated competition. Most competitions outside schools are affiliated.

Registering for the draft makes you eligible for three years. After that you must register again.

There are usually 1500 - 2000 players eligible for the draft in any one year.

To get to a state screening day or the draft camp AFL clubs must formally register their interest in you. This usually represents about 200 players. While the vast majority of draftees come from this process there is nothing to stop a club drafting someone from a suburban (or country) team. That's what happened with James Gwilt.

According to what we have been told you could not be drafted from any local comp, that is the reason why lost a player to ACTFL a couple of years back. He was told he could only be drafted from a state league.

Likewise, that is why Sean Rusling had to play one game in the SANFL to be eligible for the draft, because the other competition he played in, his School League, was not an affiliated league.

And Nathan Ablett from Modewarre.
Both Ablett and Norman had 'aged' out of the TAC Cup though.

Perhaps Gwilt had been included on a TAC training list or some such even though he never made a final list or played a game?

The rule about only being able to recruit players from the SANFL and WAFL are rules enforced by WA and SA football as part of their licence with the AFL and were insisted upon by them to protect their leagues.

A couple of years back there was a big stink because the AFL proposed to make the VAFA an inelligable league. Players would have to play either TAC or VFL. I don't quite know where they got to.

It all hinges on what is classified as an elligable league and I have no idea what does and doesn't. In any case I imagine it would be a formality for anyone who applied to get an exemption, the aim is to support the state leagues by forcing the best players to play their, not preventing guys from getting picked up.

And played with Noble Park because he wanted to continue playing Premier cricket with Sth Melbourne. I believe he was told that if he played for the Dragons, they wouldn't let him play cricket. Something like that anyway.

Barlow was another one drafted directly from the EFL.
