Are you guys still going into the league ??? Cuz, its all set up, ready to rock- Daniel and me have created our teams (how you going with your rankings Daniel??)- just waiting to fill the other 6 slots, so we can get our squads completed.
I posted all the info on the old thread- maybe u missed it ??? so ill c&p it here:

have created an 8 team league which we should hopefully fill out.

The League name is: bigfooty
The league password is: arch

The link below should give u some error message, telling you that you need to register with sandbox.com (free of course).

Once youve registered with a user name and p/word, and eneterd the league info above, and created you team name, you'll be confronted with a confusing (at first) looking draft card.
Basically, the draft happens off-line- once all 8 teams have been created. You need to give your team a name (my mine is arch's tailgators. Perhaps using your bigfooty name in there somewhere would be good- so we know who is who).
Then your next task is rank all the availabe players at each position (QB, runningback, wide receiver, tight end, kicker, and defensive players too) as to who you think is best(only need to rank the top 10-15 not the entire 50 odd). The the players are then auto-drafted using the order you picked, so if say the first 3 players you ranked at a certain positon are taken, youll get your 4th ranked guy.
Theres a good help section and FAQ's on the site, which will explain the whole scoring system, drafting, etc etc but ill answer any Q's you might have too.
Basically you want guys on your team who will
a) get alot of touchdowns (ie catch them or throw them, or run them in)
b) get alot of yards- either reception yards or rushed yards
c) in defense- get alot of tackles, and interceptions.

All these will get you points each week, which will hopefully add up to more than your opponents, and give you the win. It even gives you a ladder during the season, saying your wins-losses- total points etc.

If you know nothing about which NFL players are good, just go to any amercian search engine and type in "fantasy football", which will give you thousands of sites, which assess the "fantasy" value of certain players for the upcoming season, and if youd want to draft them or not.(ie will they be sitting on the bench all year???, are they likely to have injury problems??? etc etc)
One good one is: www.thehuddle.com

or
http://www.foxsports.com/fantasy/university/football101.sml

phew- hope that I havent scared you off already. Once you get into it, its good fun.(i promise)

good luck !!!!!!

Go the Jets.

Sorry Arch - I have to pull out, I use the computer at work to access the Net, including BigFooty (explains why I'm never around on the weekend) and I'm not allowed to play fantasy footy of any kind.

I asked nicely and the firm usually gives me anything I want as far as net access goes but unfortunately fantasy footy games of any kind are a definite no-no.

Sorry 'bout that mate - good luck and Go the Redskins !!!!

Cheers Arch, I'm still interested but it might take me a few days to read up on it, being totally ignorant about the NFL, is that OK.
My team will be called Mantis' Marauders.

thats ok if anyone wants to pull out BEFORE it starts- no biggie- just so I know and can get someone else to fill a slot.

(PS-do you work for one of the big firms BSA???)

Arch,

I'm not sure. The number of player positions wanted was difficult enough to decide upon. For example, should you go for more running backs or opt for wide receivers? I don't know which represents better value, but I've only glanced at the FAQs so far.

I'll go have a look at the rankings now. This should be fun if you can get enough participants.

thats debateable (check the message boards at the huddle), some say WR's are a better bet, some will say RB's- but last year (when I did this for the 1st time) I got burned choosing too many Wr's.
There are "usually" only two or so RB's competing for ball carrying time, while there are up to 4-5 WR's competing for the QB's attention so to speak.
Ive gone for 6 Rbs total (3 nfc-3 afc) and 5 WR's total.
Each week though, you must play:
1 QB ONLY (so dont load up with too many QB's as you can only play 1 each week)
1 RB
1 WR
& 3 Offensive Flex (RB's or WR's)
1 TE
1 Kicker
3 Def Flex (i think) which makes 11 total- so you'll have 9 on the bench each week.

Word of advice though TE's are generally useless points wise, apart from a few in league who are vital to their team, and Defensive Backs wont get you many points either- so keep the amount you choose in those categories low as possible.

PS- thats why I tried to start it early cuz theres so many decisions to make.

Geez arch i played Virtual General Manager last year with the NBA with a few mates and it was much easier than this sounds but ill research and give it a go.

it seems daunting at first, but im sure youre smart enough to work it out.
I did it for the first time last year, and it took me a while of tinkering with it, before it all suddenly clicked.
The draft and pre-season stuff is more tricky, but once thats out of the way-playing the actual season is alot simpler.

Okay Arch, I've read all the Game Assistance stuff and I'm excited. A head-to-head league should be good. I hope I don't have to play you three times!

Thanks for the tips, that should help quite a bit. I was set to choose too many quarterbacks, having forgotten that only 1 starts each week. Ranking players is hard! It's difficult to know how many will reproduce last year's form.

Also, how many players in each category should I be serious about ranking? At the moment, I am personally ranking them down to about No. 16 (a first-choice player for each team) and then accepting the rest on last year's stats.

daniel,
think about the fact that its an 8 team league, so you will always get one of the top 8 that you draft at any position.
If you decide to grab, say, 3 players at any position, then it means your 24th pick could possibly (if you happen to have the last pick at that possie) be the one you get.
If like me, do you decide you only want one TE, then theres only any need to rank the top 8, as thats all it'll go down to as far as youre concerned.
so it depends on how many players you want ata certain position, as to how far down you bother ranking them.
hope that helps.

oh also,
as for taking players on last years stats:

1)dont forget that a bunch of superstar players each year are always injured, and therefore, wont put up any numbers and so will be at the bottom of the list, but will come back this year. (ie Terrell Davis(broncos) & Vinny Testaverde (jets)

2) Rookies- having no previous stats will also be at the bottom, but CAN have huge years nonetheless.

Thanks Arch. I had put Testaverde, Davis and Jamal Anderson high up on my shopping list as I was hoping everyone had forgotten about them.

I'm done with all my rankings for now. I just hope I made the right choices and get productive players, as the draft would seem crucial to the season.

Cool- daniel- im almost done now too- just keep an eye on the injuries at NFL.com, to make sure none of ur high picks cops a season ending injury in training camp or a practice game.

Jod,
It randomly selects the order, and then rotates through it for each position.
Thats why they split up QB's, RB's & WR's into AFC and NFC, so you cant get totally dudded at any of those positions. (ie you may get the 8th pick of NFC qb's, but that means you'll get your first pick of AFC qb's & so on)
You always get at least one of your number one picks though. But 8 team leagues have slightly "unfairer" drafts than standard 10 team leagues because there is 10 positions to draft at. (ie so two teams get 2 first picks).
u may wanna read up on that, but i think thats how it goes.

Man I hope I get Kurt Warner !!!!!!

[This message has been edited by Arch (edited 03 August 2000).]

Yep Arch, I'm an NFL fan anyway so I like to keep up with the news..

It would be good to see complete fantasy player rankings from several previous seasons to know how much the statistics vary from year to year. For example, although everyone wants Kurt Warner, he did come from nowhere last season and there is the possibility he won't be the same player..

dead right

Im just a fan of his though. Hes not an arrogant prick like many of 'em- just a real good, down to earth, bloke.

Not that that gets you any F-points.

Trick is looking for the next "Kurt" though.

I think Cade Mcnown (chi) might be it-
but i still dont have the balls to draft him high up.

I used to keep track of the NFL a couple of years ago but then lost interest and havent really followed it since and i was just wondering what happened to Jerry Rice and Michael Irving. They were both wide recievers im sure you would know who im talking about. They prolly retired.

I was wondering Arch do you still regard Emmit Smith highly, where did you rank him and what did you do with Terrel Davis?

both are in my drafting range- but terrell is definitely a higher priority than emmett.
"rb's aint like wine- they DONT get better with age"

also rice is still going but nowhere as good as he was- and irvin copped a scary neck injury and retired and the end of last season.
