MELBOURNE has today announced Peter Williams as the newest senior coach to try and turn around the Demons' fortunes after a bottom four finish this year. The Demons finished 14th with five wins from 22 games, and Neale Daniher stepped down a couple of months earlier. In a surprise move, the relatively unknown Williams will step up to the plate and look to build something special for the future.

"I'm happy to be here to see what we can produce, with a mix of youth and experience on the list," Williams said. "We underperformed this season and I will be excited to turn it around, starting with the off-season and then building the club into a contender."




*Note: Hopefully this game does not corrupt itself

The goal will be to try and win premierships, and then potentially move around if need be to gain as much success as possible. I wanted to take a club that had sacked its coach last season.

MELBOURNE has completed its trade period by bringing in Adelaide's John Meesen for Pick 37, whilst receiving Pick 14 in exchange for Travis Johnstone who headed north to Brisbane. In a less notable trade, some guy called Chris Judd headed from West Coast to Carlton in exchange for a guy with a likely small future Josh Kennedy who traded navy blue for blue and gold. In terms of retirements, Byron Pickett and Clint Bizzell retired, alongside some other okay players in James Hird, Nathan Buckley and Chris Grant.

The Demons delisted Simon Godfrey, Heath Neville and Daniel Ward, Ryan Ferguson and rookies Daniel Hayes and Shane Neaves. They headed into the National Draft with selections four, 14, 21, 53, 66 and 73.

CALE Morton became the next big face of the Melbourne Football Club, drafted with Pick 4 in the AFL National Draft. The Claremont rangy talent was joined by Northern Knights' Jack Grimes (Pick 14), Calder Cannons' small Addam Maric (Pick 21), North Ballarat Rebels' Kyle Cheney (Pick 53) and South Adelaide's Tom McNamara (Pick 66). They then picked up Sandringham's Stefan Martin in the 2008 Pre-Season Draft to round out coach Peter Williams' list for 2008.

Demons competitive but fall short in four pre-season outings​

March, 2008

Melbourne has shown some promising signs in its first preseason under new coach Peter Williams despite not winning a game. Losses of eight points, nine points, 18 points and three points showed great development, with even a youth-based side only going down by three goals to Brisbane in the third match. One area of improvement for Williams will be playing four quarters, with the team having some big quarters, but not able to sustain it throughout matches, leading in three of the four matches at some point during the match. Against the Lions, they had booted 10.2 to 4.12 at half-time before fading out. Unfortunately the Demons head into the season with Ricky Petterd set to miss half of it, breaking a leg in that loss to Brisbane,

Demons name three debutants in clash with Tigers​

MELBOURNE will welcome three players to the AFL ranks in its Round 1 clash against Richmond in what is signalling a new era for the club. The Demons have named top pick and number four overall in the AFL National Draft, Cale Morton in the side, as well as Jack Grimes and Jace Bode. All three showed promising signs during the preseason, and with injures to Aaron Davey, Brock McLean and Ricky Petterd, spots opened up for the youngsters.

Morton slams home sensational six on debut as Demons reign supreme​

Round 1, 2008

DEBUTANT Cale Morton has had a match to remember, slotting half a dozen goals to lead his side to an high-scoring 34-point win over Richmond. Last year's number four selection in the AFL National Draft looked at home inside the forward line, kicking 6.2 from 11 disposals and six marks, teaming up well with David Neitz who was unstoppable at centre half-forward. Neitz booted four goals from 24 touches and nine marks in a stunning performance, while Brent Moloney was a standout in midfield wiht three goals from 30 touches and five marks. Cameron Bruce (27 disposals, four marks and one goal was another big performer over last year's wooden spooners to hand new coach Peter Williams a dream start to his career.

"I'm thrilled for the guys who showed so much over the preseason," Williams said. "It will be a tough side to pick next week with so many outstanding players, and others who have really stepped up in the reserves. "We will be keen to take a horses for courses approach, but are excited that Cale was able to have such a profound impact on debut."

Melbourne was fortunate by the fact that Richmond was inaccurate throughout, as Matthew Richardson kicked a remarkable 4.9 and Cleve Hughes scored 1.5 to account for two thirds of their side's behinds on the day. The Demons had plenty more inside 50s (58-49) and dominated the contested possessions (87-64) and clearances (44-25).

Morton boots four as Crows destroy Dees

Melbourne's honeymoon period under new coach Peter Williams had a rather abrupt end straight into Round 2, smashed by the Crows to the tune of 50 points. Adelaide had 35 scoring shots to 15, and controlled play despite Melbourne have more clearances and only four less inside 50s. Cale Morton booted another four goals, but there was not much to smile about from a Demons' point of view as they were outclassed by the Crows.

Dogs pile on pain for suffering Dees

Despite a promising first half, Melbourne struggled during a hefty 61-point defeat at the hands of an experienced Western Bulldogs outfit, going down 18.6 (124) to 9.9 (63). Despite leading at half-time, Melbourne only managed 4.6 to 14.8 in the second half as the Dogs ran rampant all over the field. Adam Cooney was unstoppable with 28 touches and four goals, while Scott West booted two from 25 disposals then strained his groin. Russell Robertson was reported for tripping in a dirty day for the Dees as Cameron Bruce was best-on with 26 disposals, four marks and a goal. The Demons won the clearances, but were dominated at the contested ball and inside 50s.

Melbourne's improvement was evident during a 33-point defeat at the hands of Hawthorn, but still allowed far too many scoring shots during the 16.20 (116) to 12.11 (83) defeat. Cale Morton booted three goals, while Brock McLean shone with 30 touches, but it would not be enough, as Lance Franklin slotted five goals, and Tim Boyle and Cyril Rioli both finished with four majors. David Neitz had a dirty day out despite booting two goals, reported for charging and will miss the Round 5 clash against the Swans.

Dees bounce back despite no goals from leading goalkickers​

DESPITE missing gun forward David Neitz to suspension, and leading goalkicker Cale Morton having just four touches and no goals, Melbourne was able to bring up its second win of the season with a tight six-point victory over Sydney. The Demons booted 16.8 to 15.8 in a tough contest, having to hold on after leading by as much as 31 points at quarter time, which was reduced to 25 points by half-time and 20 points by the final break. It was enough to get the job done despite the Swans kicking four goals to two in the final term. Instead of the main suspects, Melbourne found a way to score through Matthew Bate, Russell Robertson and Lynden Dunn who all slotted four goals, while Brent Moloney was outstanding thanks to three goals from midfield.

Cameron Bruce led the way through the midfield with 30 touches to team up well with Moloney (24), Brock McLean (23) and James McDonald (20), but it was hard to look past the contribution of Robertson, whose four goals from 25 touches and seven marks was a clear best on ground. Despite losing the clearances for the first time this season (29-36), the Demons dominated the inside 50s (53-40) and did enough to get over the line against a fairly strong Sydney side in the end, taking Melbourne's win-loss record to 2-3.

Young Dees defence overpowered by experienced Dockers outfit

Melbourne's new-look defence, which saw Lynden Dunn thrown back after four goals forward, and Jared Rivers and Paul Wheatley back in the defensive six, did not quite go as planned, with the Dockers dominating on their way to a 20.12 (132) to 10.7 (67) win. Chris Tarrant and Matthew Pavlich combined for 11 goals, while Matthew Bate was the top Demon, kicking three goals, and Cale Morton's goalless form continued. Brent Moloney was the clear star for the Demons, while David Neitz looked lively with two goals from 19 touches and nine marks.

Second term flurry sees Demons home against Cats

A returning Adem Yze showed he was willing to grab his chance with both hands, slotting three goals from 22 touches and four marks in one of the top performances of the day as Melbourne stunned reigning premiers Geelong by 14 points. In the upset of the season, the Demons showed just how far they had come this season, booting six goals to one in the second term after leading by two points at quarter time, to race out to a 30-point advantage at half-time. While the Cats managed to claw their way back, the shared impact across the board, and dominance of Jeff White over Dawson Simpson was a massive factor in the result.

Back-to-back wins has Dees back on even keel

Melbourne has levelled its win-loss record for season 2008, toppling Carlton by a goal to head to 4-4 so far. The Demons booted six goals to two in the second term to blow out the result to 34 points in an eerily similar way to the week before, though Carlton also hit back in the second half, booting seven goals to three and only just falling short by six points. Both sides - who finished in the bottom three last season - showed good improvement, with David Neitz slotting 4.4 from 11 possessions and nine marks back at full-forward, while Adem Yze continued his form despite not hitting the scoreboard, notching up 26 disposals and eight marks. Brock McLean, Jeff White and Russell Robertson were productive again too.

Port powers to victory with strong second half

Port Adelaide has reminded Melbourne the Demons still have a way to go to compete with the top sides, booting 11 goals to six in the second half to run away with the Round 9 contest, 17.12 (114) to 12.9 (81). The Demons led by two points at both quarter time and half-time, but in what has been the case for most of the season, have not been able to sustain the effort throughout four quarters of play. Warren Tredrea booted four goals in the win, while Steven Salopek was dominant with 34 touches and two goals for the Power. Cale Morton found his form agains with four snags from seven disposals and five marks, while Jeff White, Brock McLean, Brent Moloney and Adem Yze were also busy, and Jack Grimes played his best game of his debut season.

Injuries begin to mount heading into midpoint of season​

Saints talls run Demons defenders ragged

Melbourne was no match for a powerful St Kilda attack, going down by 47 points in a high-scoring contest. While the Demons managed to notch up the century of points, St Kilda had 37 scoring shots to run out big winners, including 14 goals in the first half. Nick Riewoldt slammed home five goals, and Fraser Gehrig four while Cale Morton continued his ripping debut season with five goals of his own, and David Neitz chipped in with three. Unfortunately the result was not the only sour point for the Dees as Colin Sylvia broke his ankle and will miss six week due to the injury.

Dees fall short against inaccurate Pies

In a massive Queen's Birthday clash, Melbourne has fallen five points short of Collingwood, going down 11.19 (85) to 12.8 (80) after leading at both quarter and half-time. The injuries mounted for the Dees heading into the halfway mark of the season, as Adem Yze twisted his ankle and will miss games, while teenager Tom McNamara and ruck Paul Johnson also had injury concerns in the match. Cale Morton managed to slot four goals in the loss, while Brent Moloney and Jeff White were outstanding, though Travis Cloke slammed home five goals from 14 touches and 11 marks making the most of the Demons being short with McNamara off the field injured.

Inaccurate Lions get up over Dees

Despite inaccuracy threatening to cause a boilover, Brisbane was able to secure an 11-point victory over Melbourne, getting up 13.18 (96) to 13.7 (85). The 11-point margin flattered the Demons who were well beaten for the inside 50s count, but accuracy kept them in it, also winning the contested possessions and contested marks. With Colin Sylvia out injured, Isaac Weetra started forward and kicked a goal, while Cale Morton's four majors without a behind continued his remarkable accuracy. Brad Green wound back the clock for a sensational performance, while Brad Miller was best-on in a standout game thanks to 22 possessions, 10 marks and two goals.

Robertson ruled out for season as Dees draw with Eagles

Having knocked off the reigning premiers a month earlier, Melbourne had another great performance against the 2006 premiers, West Coast, drawing at 117-apiece in a big game. While the end result was a good one considering the opposition, a second half fadeout - after leading by 31 points at quarter time and 45 points at the main break - was again a major talking point. David Neits kicked five goals and Cale Morton slotted four majors from seven touches, while James McDonald was absolutely superb with 34 disposals, teaming up well with Cameron Bruce (29 and two goales) and Brent Moloney (21 and one). Brad Ebert kicked four goals for the Eagles in the draw, while Chad Fletcher was huge with 30 touches and a goal through the midfield. The worst news for Melbourne was a serious back injury to Russell Robertson who went down after a solid game, and now the high-flyer will miss the rest of the 2008 season.

Demons surpass 2007 win total with biggest win of 2008

Melbourne has reaffirmed itself as a big improver in season 2008 with the most comprehensive performance yet, winning by 40 points over North Melbourne in a dominant outing. The Demons did it a little differently compared to their other wins, leading by two points at the final break before piling on a whopping 8.2 to 2.0 and running away 16.11 (107) to 9.13 (67) winners. Melbourne dominated the inside 50s (52-37), contested possessions (89-75) and clearances (36-29) in an eye-opening performance. Six players had 20 or more disposals, with David Neitz best on ground thanks to 26 disposals, 14 marks and two goals, while Brock McLean, Brent Moloney, Cameron Bruce and James McDonald controlled the midfield. The win was made all the more impressive by the fact Melbourne was missing two key talents up forward in Colin Sylvia and Russell Robertson to injury.

Melbourne gave it a huge crack but fell short by five points in their bid to upstage Essendon in a repeat of the 2000 AFL Grand Final. Melbourne led at quarter time, but trailed by 16 points at the main break following a disappointing second term, before racing back to within a kick, but unable to get ahead, falling 15.7 (97) to 14.8 (92) to the Bombers. Addam Maric tore his hamstring and will miss a month, while Cale Morton kicked another three goals, and the likes of Cameron Bruce (36 disposals, one goal) and James McDonald (28 and one) had leather poisoning, but there was no stropping Jason Johnson for the Bombers who kicked a couple of goals off 31 disposals.

Melbourne has doubled-up on wins over last year's wooden spooners Richmond, saluting by a straight kick, 19.6 (120) to 17.11 (113) thanks to some Adem Yze magic. Returning to the side after a long stint in the VFL, Yze booted four goals from 14 touches, teaming up well with Cale Morton (four goals) and Brad Green (three) inside 50), as the Demons got up in a thriller after leading by 22 points at the main break. Jeff White was strong through the ruck, though Matthew Richardson was unbelievable at full-forward for the Tigers, slotting half a dozen goals from 13 possessions and nine marks.

Crows slam home 15 goals to four in second half stampede

Adelaide has shown no mercy in a 63-point walloping of Melbourne, winning 23.9 (147) to 12.12 (84) thanks to a 15.6 to 4.2 second half. Trent Hentschel slammed home six majors in the win, as the Crows forward line was unstoppable, and it came despite even numbers in the inside 50s, and Melbourne winning the clearances. Adelaide was just better at the contest, and Tyson Edwards and Simon Goodwin ran rampant around the ground. Cale Morton was the standout up forward for the Dees, slotting 4.4, while Adem Yze and Colin Sylvia were busy, the latter coming in and kicking two goals off a stint out due to injury. Another sour point was the strained groin to Jeff White, with the reliable ruck set to miss a match, and his absence was noticed against Rhett Biglands.

Melbourne has claimed another win to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Adelaide by getting up by 29 points over Western Bulldogs. Melbourne won 17.7 (109) to 11.14 (80) as the likes of Robert Murphy and Ryan Griffen got injured leaving the Dogs two down on the bench throughout late in the match. Adem Yze continued his great form with another three goals, while David Neitz, Caleb Morton and Colin Sylvia all hit the scoreboard with multiple goals, and Mark Jamar stepped up in the absence of Jeff White. Unlike the Bulldogs, the Demons were without an injury, allowing them to take the win despite losing the inside 50s, contested possessions and clearance count.

Melbourne has given its finals hopes a huge boost, with an 11-goal spanking of Hawthorn. The Dees never looked like losing, piling on six goals in the first term, and lead by 30 points at the main break on their way to a dominant seven goals to one third term, and eventual 23.10 (148) to 12.11 (83) victory in the clear best performance of the season. James McDonald was the surprise hero in front of goal, booting four goals playing off a wing, whilst a whopping 16 of the 22 players kicked majors for the Demons. Paul Wheatley and Nathan Carroll were also superb in defence, while Brent Moloney was lively though the midfield in a high-possession game.

Heartbreak for Dees as Swans win thriller

In a game that could have gone a long way to securing Melbourne a finals spot, the Demons have suffered a heartbreaking three-point loss to Sydney. Despite being more accurate, the Demons were smashed in the contested ball (90-67) and overwhelmed in the clearances (36-24) and inside 50s (55-46) and even only received four free kicks for the entire match. Cameron Bruce did all he could with 31 disposals, six clearances and 10 marks in a best-on performance, while Cale Morton and Adem Yze both kicked three goals. Barry Hall also snagged three majors for the Swans, while Brett Kirk and Jude Bolton combined for a whopping 67 disposals in the win. It was the first match where the Demons did not make a change at the selection table coming in, but could not repeat their heroics of the week before, going down 15.16 (106) to 16.7 (103).

Demons move within two points of a finals spot heading into the last round

Melbourne is in the position of an unthinkable finals position, defeating Fremantle in the penultimate round to set up a potential spot if the Demons can win and results go their way. Melbourne took control in the first half to race out to a 25-point lead over the Dockers in their Round 21 match, then piled on six goals to two in the third term to put the result beyond doubt, culminating in a 17.16 (118) to 9.16 (70) victory. Cale Morton booted four goals and David Neitz snagged three, in a real team effort, which saw the teams fairly evenly matched, but Tom McNamara keep an inaccurate Chris Tarrant to just 1.6 for the match. Brock McLean looked good, but it was hard to look past the two key forward, who combined for 37 disposals, 24 marks and 7.6 in the win.

MELBOURNE will play finals in new coach Peter Williams' debut season after the red and blue side got up in a thriller over Geelong, securing eighth place in the process. Helped by Adelaide defeating Port Adelaide, the Demons snuck into eighth and will head to Perth next week to take on West Coast in an elimination final, the side that the Demons drew with earlier in the season. For only the second time this season, the Demons made no change to their lineup, and it worked with Melbourne getting up 17.8 (110) to 13.19 (97). David Neitz and Brent Moloney both booted three goals apiece as the Dees won the contested possessions (80-69), clearances (33-25) and inside 50s (46-36) in a comprehensive display. More impressively, Melbourne was down by four points at the final break, but found a way, booting five goals to two in the last term to run out winners despite seven less scoring shots.

Five players had 20 or more disposals, led by Cameron Bruce (24), Brent Moloney (23) and Jack Grimes (23), while five players booted multiple goals. Moloney in particular was influential with three goals from 23 touches and three marks in the middle, raking up eight clearances, while Bruce had seven to go with 24 touches and seven marks. Grimes, and Brock McLean were also dominant, as was Mark Jamar who took 11 marks and had 16 hitouts from 16 disposals in a another big win for the Demons over Dawson Simpson in the Cats' ruck stocks.

Demons role dice with Robertson for clash out west​

MELBOURNE has made just one change to its side that was successful against Geelong in the final round, bringing in some extra firepower with Russell Robertson replacing defender Chris Johnson for the elimination final against West Coast. Despite having a plethora of other options, the Demons have rolled the dice with Robertson coming back in off a 10-week stint injured. His back was given the green light for the first final, and coach Peter Williams has rolled the dice. "It's a risk, but he's a quality player, and the medical staff have given him the green light to go," he said. "We will allow him to play in the pocket more so than up the field to work him into it."

Robertson gamble turns match-winning call as inclusion piles on eight goals in huge win​

Elimination Final, 2008

ANY critics about the move to bring back exciting forward Russell Robertson were silenced early on in the Elimination Final, as the talent who had not played for 10 weeks, made up for it in a match-winning elimination performance. Robertson booted eight majors in a career-high and season-high for his club, sending his team into the semi-finals. Melbourne won by a whopping eight goals out in Perth against West Coast, getting up 22.14 (146) to 14.14 (98). The Dees led by four points at quarter time, but extended it out to 16 by the main break. West Coast kept in touch at the final break, cutting the deficit to 15, before the Dees slammed home seven goals to two in the final term to run away with the contest in a massive win.

Aside from Robertson's eight-goal best-on-ground performance, Brent Moloney, Brock McLean and Cameron Bruce all racked up 30-plus disposals, while Cale Morton kicked three goals from eight scoring shots, and David Neitz was also prominent with three goals from 17 disposals and five marks. Jeff White beat Dean Cox at the stoppages, and while the Eagles star was too strong around the ground, the Dees killed their opposition around the clearances (42-26), at contested ball (90-67) and inside 50s (59-49) in the big win.

Davey recalled for Demons against smaller Magpies ​

FOR the second consecutive week, Melbourne has rolled the dice with a returning injured player, bringing back the classy Aaron Davey for the do-or-die semi-final against Collingwood. Having narrowly lost the Queen's Birthday clash to the Pies, Melbourne will be keen to turn it around, and the Magpies have gone in with a smaller outfit. John McCarthy has been named at full-back, making the Demons move Paul Wheatley to the position and utilising Tom McNamara off the bench. Not needing the extra size, Colin Garland has made way off the bench for Davey to slot straight into the forward pocket, pushing Colin Sylvia up to the wing, and Adem Yze to half-forward. "It is a bit of a different line-up we are looking at," Melbourne coach Peter Williams said. "We noticed they went a bit smaller and think Tom could be caught out on the faster opponent, so we've shuffled accordingly. "The midfield is where the game is won though, and if we do what we did last week, then we can give our forwards first chance, and we are back at full strength in that regard, and actually have too much speed for their talls."

Good times keep rolling for giant-killing Dees​

IT was a nail-biting finish, but a goal in the dying seconds to ruck Jeff White helped the Demons get over the line against Collingwood, sending the black and white side out in straight sets. Melbourne moved through to the preliminary final thanks to the 16.6 (102) to 14.15 (99) victory to land in the final four after being bottom four last year. Trailing by 14 points at quarter time, the Demons cut the deficit to just five points at half-time, before Collingwood extended it out to 15 at the final break. Somehow Melbourne found a way, with White going forward and kicking three final term goals - including the match winner - to help his side to the three-point victory.

White was a star with 15 disposals, eight marks, 20 hitouts and four gaols against josh Fraser, while Brent Moloney had a match-high 29 disposals, as well as five marks and eight clearances. Cameron Bruce (28 disposals, three marks and six clearances) and Brock McLean (23 disposals, seven marks, six clearances and a goal) were also impressive, while Jared Rivers kept Travis Cloke to just one goal after the big man had a big day out last time. Aside from White, the forward line all contributed bar the out-of-form Davey who will be better for the run despite amassing just six touches and one mark in his return from injury.

Demons shuffle positions but remain unchanged​

MELBOURNE'S giant-killing side that took down top four side Collingwood will remain unchanged for the battle against Top 2 side Essendon in what is set to be the Demons' toughest challenge in the finals series to-date. They have defeated fifth placed West Coast over in Perth, then stunned the Magpies at the MCG last week, but now take on a far more experienced Bombers outfit, led by a forward duo of Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas. Teenager Tom McNamara has been given the job on Lloyd in what was a huge show of faith from coach Peter Williams, whilst Jared Rivers has been thrown onto Lucas, while Nathan Carroll takes Courtney Johns. "We had to move a few players around because the size of the Bombers is different to the Magpies last week," Williams said. "We're excited by the challenge coming up against a well-rested side that is one of the best in the competition. "We hope to continue our form, but we know how good this team is."

Unbelievable Dees book stunning Grand Final spot​

AS if it was a dream, Melbourne fans are waking up today with the knowledge their side has been transformed from a from a bottom four outfit to one that is now a win away from a drought-breaking premiership. Melbourne stunned top two side Essendon by 22 points, piling on 14 goals in the first three quarters, then holding on in a nervous final term to win, 15.15 (105) to 11.17 (83). The Bombers led by eight points at the first break, but a whopping 11 goals to three over the next two quarters saw the underdog Dees race to a 40-point lead at three quarter time. Essendon hit back in the final quarter, but booted 4.5 in an inaccurate display to fall 22 points short in the end.

David Neitz booted 4.2 from 17 disposals and 10 marks, while Brent Moloney kicked three goals from 28 disposals and seven marks out of the middle. Brock McLean (31 disposals) and Cameron Bruce (26) both had productive days out, while Cale Morton was consistent with two majors, and Aaron Davey built on last week's performance with 1.3 from 13 disposals and two marks. Matthew Lloyd managed 4.5 from 12 disposals and 11 marks for his side, but the Bombers were outclassed by a hungrier outfit who dominated the clearances (32-22).

Demons forced into extra size for tall Saints in 2008 Grand Final​

A FOUR-tall forward line from St Kilda has forced Melbourne into making an unlucky change, with Ricky Petterd out of the successful Demons' side. Matthew Warnock has been brought into the team to match up on Justin Koschitzke, with the tall joining the likes of strong forwards Fraser Gehrig, Nick Riewoldt and Matthew Ferguson. Warnock will join Jared Rivers, Tom McNamara and Nathan Carroll as the four talls in the defence, whilst the forward line remains light and speedy against a taller outfit. Both sides head into the Grand Final as having the two longest premiership droughts of 44 and 42 years heading into the 2008 decider. "It's an incredibly tough call on Ricky," Demons coach Peter Williams said. "We just felt we needed the extra height in defence, and unfortunately he was the one to miss out. "We feel we are better matched this way, but in saying that, we think we can have an advantage up the other end with our athleticism. "St Kilda has been the best team all year and have a 20-4 record so there's little doubt what is confronting us, but we're ready to accept the challenge."

Melbourne become premiers in remarkable run from eighth​

MELBOURNE has come from eighth spot on the ladder to claim an unbelievable drought-breaking premiership over St Kilda. The Demons had not won a decider since 1964, but were the best team on the day, stunning the Saints who had a 20-4 record heading into the match for the 2008 season. Leading by seven points at quarter time, Melbourne booted five goals to two in the second term to bolt out to a 29-point lead by half-time. A tighter third quarter saw them lead by 30 points, before running away with six goals to four in the last term to run out 44-point victory, 17.15 (117) to 11.7 (73).

Key forward David Neitz was named the Norm Smith Medallist, pulling down 12 marks to go with 23 disposals and slotting 3.3 for the match, as the Demons won the inside 50s (53-45) and clearances (30-28) counts. Though the Saints won the contested possessions (87-76), they did not have enough contributors with only Fraser Gehrig (four goals) kicking multiple majors. Brownlow Medallist Nick Riewoldt finished with one goal from 10 touches in a stellar job from Jared Rivers who took nine marks from 19 disposals and even kicked a major himself. Brock McLean (25 disposals), Brent Moloney (24) and James McDonald (22) controlled the midfield, but the forward line was dominant with all six players hitting the scoreboard, and four of them picking up 20 or more touches for the Demons.

The win provided plenty of great storylines from first year players Cale Morton and Nathan Jones, to veterans such as Neitz, Adem Yze and Russell Robertson all earning premiership medals. It is near impossible for Dees fans to put their thoughts into words given the side finished bottom four in 2008, but turned it around to win in 2008.
