Maxwell

Many have doubted and some have openly slammed him, I myself had concerns about his 'touch' coming back from a hand injury straight into a final.

Most here have tremendous respect for pants and his efforts in '90. So its time to give credit where credit is due.

Maxy came back and played his role, not only general in the back line but standing his opponent and beating him.

Welcome back captain courageous and apologies for doubting your ability to compete, even with a dodgy thumb.

Re: Maxwell

His game was absolutely incredible, his best for the year by a mile.

It amazed me that he could play so well after suffering such a serious injury and that his touch was so good. He was sure and steady and led that backline like a general.

The man is an incredible competitor and obviously should never be doubted (although i think we all were probably nervous).

Well done Maxy! :thumbsu:

Re: Maxwell

as mentioned in the game threads, harry & maxy played blinders, carbon copies of the 2010 finals series, and are probably the reason we won.

the defence has played (as a group) brilliantly this year and to have the confidence to think maxwell, o'brien, davis, shaw, tarrant & reid (pending injury outcome) are all at the top of their game bodes well for our last 2 games this year.

no one needs to play out of their skin for us to win - they just need to put up good solid performances and back to back it will be.

Re: Maxwell

We talk about "big game players", particularly in finals where reputations are enhanced and we think Pendlebury, Thomas, Swan etc but this bloke has done it again.

Ironically, it was his best game he has played all season, despite being in doubt and sore. His efforts in big games are exceptional and highlights the fact as to why he is a fierce leader and our inspirational captain.

Come now.

Where's the love for Tooves?

Re: Maxwell

I'm glad he played on the weekend (the fact he played a blinder is a story for another day).

Imagine had he missed, we'd won and then straight to the prelim. That's a lot of footy he'd be out for. You'd be hesitant to let him come back in if it was the prelim but him playing on the weekend has bridged the gap a bit. Got some minutes in the legs, got some touch and he did it well.

I think we're going to be okay. :)

Re: Maxwell

As good as Maxy was, I think our whole back 6 need a toast, and will need a big one in a few weeks.

We will win the flag, and when we look back, the main reason will be the back six (Maxwell, Reid, Tarrant, Shaw, Davis, Toovey).

It's the best back 6 I've ever seen, at any club I've ever seen play, and it is the main reason why we will go back to back.:thumbsu:

Re: Maxwell

Not being a fan boy or anything but I have my doubts if the defense would have stood up enough without him, West Coast put enormous pressure on all over the ground.

Just an uncontested mark here or there in their forward line towards the end might have been enough to tip the balance.

Re: Maxwell

Kudos to Maxwell, true finals performer.

I have a feeling that the combination of Shaw and Maxwell helps both of them play better. Maxwell can be less involved in the counter-attack (as he was when Shaw was suspended - and struggled being one of those guys) and Shaw can free himself up a bit with Maxwell going third man up etc.

Maxy had more poise on the weekend playing his natural role. I actually think the pace of the game in finals gives him that urgency that he was lacking when he laid off a few hospital handpasses most games during the season.

This also.

I think it was Leigh Matthews who said he thought this was the best, most cohesive back 6 he had seen last year - when it was Reid, Brown, Maxwell, Toovey, Shaw, O'Brien... Now we have added Tarrant, removed Brown and added a 7th in Davis.

You're forgetting Harry O mate! We don't have the conventional back 6 - we have a back 7. :D

Amazing for a guy who has looked out of touch this year to come out carrying an injury and play a game like that. His ability to lift himself on the big stage is incredible, has to be close to the most determined player in the league.
