There is a lot of discussion at the moment about the relative merits of high draft picks in a number of threads. Implicit in some posts is the suggestion that we should do everything we can to get the best draft position possible.

Earlier in the season this would've looked like a theoretical exercise. But with our recent improvements, and victories over Port and West Coast, more than 4 wins this season is a distinct possibility. Add to this Port, Crows, Eagles will be reviewing their lists and may go the tank themselves. (don't think they are doing it at present)

So the question is this: Should we look like avoiding the spoon or winning more than 4 games, should we tank or not?

No: We would lose more than we would gain, in terms of building a winning culture and there is no guarentee of get the pick right.

Yes: We cannot afford to win more than 4 games this year especially with a compromised draft. We need to bottom out properly and get a priority pick.

Yes: We need to secure pick 4 but don't need a priority pick.

Doesn't matter: we'll finish last anyway without tanking

Personally, I think no we shouldn't tank even if it costs us pick 4.

What do the rest of you think?

It is sad you lot would consider tanking now with the numbers of talent you have to work with, if in 2-3 years you aren't getting anywhere without tanking then you wouldn't need to tank would you. Start winning more and don't tank, i hate tankers!!!!!
*To even have a thread for this and or want your club to do this is a very low thing. Would not want you at Brisbane

Did you even read the part where I stated that I did not want to tank?

I look at it like this, with the kids improving week to week we should continue to try and win as many games as possible and if that means we lose pick 4 then so be it.

At least then you can take heart from the fact that unlike previous years where our late wins have come from the older players dragging us over the line, late wins this year will be achieved by the kids continual improvement. I also believe that learning how to win games is just as important to a young players development as playing the games is. Teach kids how to win games now when they are young and later on it becomes like second nature.

i look forward to a year when we dont see one of these polls. i voted no.
LMAO....yeah darth cant wait for a year or 5 of polls that ask, where do we want to finish on the ladder after the home/away games, 3rd, 2nd or 1st.. Or did you like the way the players celebrated with the crowd when doing the lap with the cup in their hands....;)

I will never agree with us tanking and bringing us down to the level of the scum (Carlton), every week i hope we win.

I totally understand the reasons for tanking, but i think if we can develop players better then we will get what we need anyway. The draft history is full of superstars that went late in the draft (Chris Grant was something like pick #100 IIRC).

Who is to say that it is then time to stop tanking? When do you ever have enough great players?

I think there are a lot more important factors in winning a premiership than 1 or 2 places in the draft order.

Not fussed but if the last 2-3 games is the difference between pick 4 and a later pick then I prefer we get pick 4. No one will care if we lost 1 or 2 games on the upside we have a better shot at getting another 10 year elite player for the club that will help us get that 11th premiership. Had we won 1-2 games more the last few years we would not have had Deledio Cotchin or Martin. Without quality players we are not going to challenge.

Hit the nail on the head! At the start of the season, this was a development year where results would not count! Now after beating WC and Port (the 2 teams just above us), this should all change? WC and Port have been the 2 most disappointing teams (also Adelaide) this year but because we beat one in horrendous conditions and the other in Melbourne (like we did last year), we are heading in the right direction and should win as many as possible!:(:(

If Crows, Eagles and Port are all reviewing their list and will be culling, surely we must too as we are all not good enough! People need to remember that Richmond has pretty much full side out there (no Foley) whereas WC were missing 5-6 regulars and Port missing 3-4, makes a huge difference..

We need to become smarter than this... Terry would have made us win more than 3 games to finish the year, however, I think Dimma is looking at the bigger picture..

We didn't have our best 22 out there, we were missing, Foley Morton Thursfield & Polo who should all be in our best 22. WCE were missing Glass Selwood Kerr & Lynch from their best 22 and you could say that those missing from WC were of more importance to them than our outs are to us.

No way man I'm sick of being tagged a spooner and a laughing stock.
Agreed. I don't care about pick 4 or whatever it is i think we have enough talent in our list to build on maybe make some trades to get some more youngsters or already decent established players. Screw finishing last for the sake of getting a high draft pick.

Should be in our best 22. Only Foley "should" be in our best 22. At the moment, Morton, Thursty and Polo are NOT in our best 22. That is why they are not playing for Richmond but for Coburg!
Glass, Selwood, Kerr, Swift, Butler, Masten and Shuey are all out injured. Now fair enough, they are not all in the 22 when they have a fit squad, however, 4-5 of them are. We have a fit squad at the moment and the only one not fit is Foley who is a walk up 22 star.
Therefore, Richmond was only 1 player from out CURRENT Best 22
WCE were 4-5 players from their best CURRENT 22..

Foley is in our best 22 but injured, Morton & Thursfield have both been mentioned by Hardwick as being in our best 22 when fit and in form, neither are in form at the moment and are therefore playing for Coburg.

No point in tanking, we will get not a bad pick anyway even with the Gold Coast coming in. But, we need to win as many games as possible to give the young kids some confidence, after the win against Port Adelaide, we have been playing better footy. Although we got beat by saints two weeks ago by 35 points, we have won 2 games in the last 3 weeks which is a good side.

Really want the boys to get up this weekend, they deserve it.

I think the most amount of games we will win is 5, and one of those is Round 22 against Port. To be honest I don't think that one extra win against an average side is worth an extra earlyish pick. Hopefully Port have some of their injured players back and are in in line to make the 8.

We cant get ahead of ourselves, We will still get the odd smashing. We wont play like that every game. I think we will end the year on 4 or 5 wins.

foley aside some would argue if they are our best 22 then we need to tank.
