Lyon said the club would now review its free agency identification and decision-making.

"It's such an important aspect of building your list, so you need to get it right," he said.

"To this point it hasn't worked. That's not to say it can't work."
Strong words from the coach.

What does the club change?

There are probably two parts to this issue. The first part relates to our understanding of what who we were recruiting, did the club's due diligence fail to identify Sylvia's fitness/work ethic problems? The second part is the how much the club believed they could improve Colin's behavior - they may have been well aware of the issues Sylvia had to overcome but figured that under a different professional environment he would rise to the challenge.

It's interesting to see how often the terms 'professional' and 'work ethic' have been used in relation to the 2014 draftees. Between both the Simpson and Sylvia troubles it seems clear the club has put a renewed focus on these character aspects.

I didn't think D Pearce turned out that badly. I guess Sylvia did put a pretty bitter taste in his mouth from the sounds of it.

I feel that the club should still continue to identify the weaknesses in our list and approach players accordingly. However, they might need to be stricter in some of their "personality" attributes criteria so that we get players who are more committed and will fit in with RTB tough approach to coaching.

He could be talking about our failure to land a KPP, and instead of using a draft pick, settling on someone Sylvia. Which would make sense, but does that mean he thinks we shouldn't go after Rance?

IMO Rance is the player we have the best chance of landing out of all of the free agent KPPs we have gone after

it's weird. Other than the issues with Pitt/Simpson etc, most of the kids they're picking seem to have the right stuff. They chose the right characters in Mzungu and Spurr...
Mature aged blokes from lower leagues are always going to require pretty good character to stand out. AFL is a bit of a closed shop, players in the system will always have higher perceived value than those outside.

The club should target players at clubs that have been successful but due to list turnover are sliding back down the ladder. That seems to be the more sound approach - Goddard and Dal Santo are pretty good examples.

Also has to be remembered that getting an established player is a lot harder for WA clubs. Saying 'target KPPs' is great, but who? They're sought after by every club, and given a choice, a Melbourne based player will more likely choose a Melbourne based club then packing everything up and moving to the other side of the country.

Yeah, it may be that unless a Rance type announces he wants to come, we put the cue in the rack and concentrate on the draft

Would probably have to confine it to WA-born players at Victorian clubs and any player at non-Vic clubs.

Getting a good quality Vic-born player from a Vic club to choose to come to Freo is just about impossible. He will have far more convenient options to choose from and nothing else drawing him to WA.

Drafting has been very average and trading/free agent recruiting has been pretty terrible. When are fans and the club going to realise that Victorians and Freo don't gel? They have no respect for the club and no interest in Perth. Heads should roll at list management and recruiting.

Money isn't enough. Of the nine Melbourne clubs, there will always be at least one with as much cap space as Freo, and at least one that is as competitive on field as Freo. A highly sought after Melbourne based player (say, James Frawley) can choose money, success or both without having to change his living arrangements at all.

That's the environment Freo works in, and the club won't find best value when pursuing free agents from Victoria.

It's in a brown paper bag for a reason. ;)

Maybe we should try reverse-psychology ... Tell 'em we're no longer recruiting players from other clubs. Only recruiting through the draft. ;)

Victorians and Freo don't gel? Tell that to Mundy and Barlow, Crowley and others.
You know what I mean. Drafting and long term contracts is a bit different (though Melbourne city boys will always have the flight risk a kid from Ballarat/Tasmania/SA is a lot less likely to). But time and time again FFC is burnt by wasting time (Frawley, Riewoldt, Cloke) or money and time (Sylvia, Gumbleton, Jack Anthony) by getting them over.

There should be a serious change in the way the club thinks about pursuing players.

I took it to mean that it hasn't worked in this instance (Sylvia) and they'll review to ensure we don't pick up another dud.
What a bizarre thing to say. So previously Freo were haphazard and didn't think about picking up players?

The change should be a massive change in philosophy and chase. Look at the history of non-draft pick ups and there is a very obvious pattern: they don't work out.

I bet you thought the club 'learned from their mistakes' with Jack Anthony too and that Sylvia was different.....

Pick based on results and attitude not on potential unless they're under 23.

Our recruiting hasnt been that bad of late. Barlow, Tabs, Spurr, Dawson all seem like winners. Surely its the same team picking all players. Bit drastic for Ross I'm sure he wanted Sylvia.

Think your being very harsh there, overall its been above average, no one picks all winners.

The Eagles have recruited poorly from other clubs too. Let's not forget Paul Harding, Andy Lovell, Ilija Grgic, Cory Young, Warren Dean, Brad Dick, Josh Hill, Cale Morton, Xavier Ellis, Sharrod Wellingham, Jamie Cripps and Jamie Bennell.

Fremantle don't play the Eagles every week.

I don't know how you arrived at all that with what I said – actually I have no idea what you're talking about. But what I presumed from what Ross said was that it was limited to recruiting turkeys like Sylvia and Anthony, and not a blanket statement about our drafting in general.
