1. 30 years isn't a particularly 'short' period of time.
3. A good % of people who post on this site will have never seen Leigh Matthews play.
3. Goals are a lot harder to come by now than they were back in Matthews' time.

No issue with 1 & 2.

3 however.....No.

You're joking, right?

Average goals kicked by leading goal scorer 1969-1985: 109

Average goals kicked by leading goal scorer 2005-2016: 82

Only once during Eddie's career has someone topped 100 goals. It happened 18 times over the course of Matthews' career.

Average goals per team during those same eras?

Not much change at all.

You're trying to compare Betts with the GOAT here FFS....You're on a hiding to nothing mate.

Franklin must be the greatest full-forward ever then.

Am I?

I've not even entered the debate, let alone said Betts is better than Matthews.

Just pointing out that more goals were scored in Matthews' time than the current day.

The overall average from the 70's to now hasn't changed much at all.....You'll need to find a more adequate reason/excuse.

You're right.

Less goals being kicked - by total and average - isn't anywhere near proof enough that goals are harder to come by.

As you were.

Got some figures to back your tongue in cheek?;)

Eddie wouldn't even be in the top 3 as yet for small forwards overall:....All of Matthews, Bartlett & Daicos have him covered quite easily.

They also had far more strings to their bow, as players.

Betts & Milne would make for a far more interesting comparison & discussion.

Sure, but what purpose is there for presenting them again when you continue to miss the point?

Exhibit A:

Eddie wouldn't even be in the top 3 as yet for small forwards overall:....All of Matthews, Bartlett & Daicos have him covered quite easily.

I repeat. I am not saying - and never have said - that Betts is a better small forward than Matthews.

Let's see if you can come to that realization before we continue any further. Based on your efforts thus far in this thread, and the fact I've already moved to clarify that, I'm guessing it may take you a little while longer.
