Toby Greene… again.

Like a lot of people, I am of the opinion that Toby Greene should be suspended. However, if Fritsch, Franklin, Daniher etc etc got off, then Greene has to as well, just for consistency sake. However, this is something the AFL needs to address in the off season. The fact that a player can get suspended for an accidental head clash, but have something like Franklin get off, is ridiculous.

Absolute joke. AFL and media are always banging on about the optics and having a better influence on local footy and kids. Greene's elbow was a footy accident, and made to look worse by Danger slipping, it all happened in a split second. That's footy, sometimes accidents happen.

Selwood on the other hand lines up an oppo player and elects not only to bump, but to bump high. That's the kind of act no one wants to see in footy, especially lower leagues. Joke!

Danger slipping did not alter the outcome, as his head was in the same position. The selwood bump was intentional but soft as butter compared to deliberate elbow. Also the main difference with Fritsch (who should have also been suspended mind you) was that his opponent came from the peripheral so you could argue it was a reflex action. Greene knew full well that Danger was coming in front on and chose to raise his elbow.

I guess my thing is, OK drop it to a week, throw it out altogether, good for him, no worries. If it had been judged as no case to answer, I've seen worse decisions. But how do you downgrade the impact?

Well Dustys wallet is about to get a lot thinner based on this precedent.

Assume any high fend off from Dusty from now on will be graded as low impact, careless and high contact. Resulting in an endless amount of fines. Unless of course the fend off results in an unfortunate injury it will be upgraded.

What an absolute joke and witch hunt this has been. It’s an unfortunate footballing accident. Accidents happen in a contact sport when we are talking about a split .5 of a second reaction time. If anyone actually thinks in that time Greene was able to mentally process the angle, direction and exact point of contact of his elbow with a calculated intent into Dangerfield then they are insane. If lifting your arm for a fend off is careless, they need to all be considered careless and all high contact if there is contact to the face from now on.

But we all know if this was Dusty it would have been praised and likely play on as occurred many times over the years.

Not sure how you can say that, he slipped and it lowered his upper chest/neck. Anyway that wasn't really my point.
The fact that Selwood lined someone up and deliberately hit them, and got them in the head is a worse look.

Toby Greene suspended for being Toby Greene

Blokes fend off and raise their arms when being tackled all day long.

Danger knocked a bloke out in a grand final.

Neither should be suspensions

Come back when Dusty injures someone fending off with the hand as he does.

7 or 8 examples here you might like to relive.

Wont be able to Appeal the 1 week. Well played AFL. Change the punishment in Round 21 without any changes to the rules.

Next week when Buddy throws another elbow we will see another fine, because the rules allow them to rate Low if they want...
GWS taking the 1 match ban to the Appeals Board.

I'd challenge you across his 260 odd games for you to find Dusty elbowing to the throat of another player as a fend off.

I am aware his open palm fend off has slipped high on occasion, but he never leads with an elbow to the throat.

Dusty probably fends a dozen times a game, showing that it's very possible to do it without leading with the elbow.

Yep throat punches are much better………
Sure, show me a closed fist punch to the throat when he's fending off. I've got time and you've got 260 games to prove it :)

If Toby Greene leads with the palm, even if it does slip high, he's not going to get suspended.

General Giant before you go off - you do realise the Giants were actually successful in their appeal in some way:

The Giants - while unsuccessful in having Greene’s ‘careless’ conduct charge thrown out - successfully argued ‘high’ impact down to ‘medium’ for the high fend off on Patrick Dangerfield, reducing the sanction to one match.

So based on the above, how could anyone argue that the impact wasn't at least medium based on the below?

Dangerfield was substituted out of the match and spent Friday night in hospital, before scans on Saturday morning revealed bruising to his larynx but no fracture. He is resting up at home after being discharged from hospital, with his availability for next week's game still unknown.

-Subbed off, spends a night in hospital, bruised throat and might not play next week. There's no way in hell that is "low impact"....
