Delisted Todd Banfield (2008-2013)

His hands looked alright against Freo, but last night in the dew he was mr Fumbles again. His defensive pressure was brilliant.

Tony Shaw was right when he said Banfield hasn't shown any improvement since he started. There are just no signs of development in terms of his ability to execute skills.

I'd agree, but I'm also sick of Shaw saying that Banfield needs to play, or learn to play in the middle. His lack of one-touch ability is the exact reason why he is not played in those roles.

It's this lack of ability that will be the difference with him being a top player to a mid range player. I don't mind following my team when they are in a position of development over a fairly long duration of time however it is this lack of development in Banfield that will not take us forward. I'm harsh but if there isn't improvement soon in his touch then somebody else like Green or Zorko should get their chance.

It will be interesting to see how many games he will get into the future as he offers us turbo speed that we sorely lack.It may come to a point where that won't be enough but in the short term I think he is pretty safe in a team of our ability. If Green and Zorko are tried and fail he might get 200 games.

Love Banfields chasing and speed, but like many have said his hands really are some of the worst I've seen. He really needs to concentrate and gather some poise when he's trying to pick up the pill, just seems to panic sometimes. I'm hoping he's had some more coaching on his set shots in the offseason also as he tends to stab at the ball on the more gettable shots

Unfortunately the best way to allow him to improve on his fumbles is to keep playing him in the seniors. I find it interesting he has so many doubters after playing one of his best games against Gold Coast.

I know it was dewy, but I don't think he had a great game personally and if that's one of his better games, i would rather we give Green another go for a bit. He seems to have better hands, gets a decent amount of the ball and still has red hair

Todd is also very good at positioning at the contest and often puts himself in a postion where he is running towards goal with the ball in front of him and his defender behind him. I think this is one of the reasons his fumbles are so pronounced and frustrating. You think "we are on here" and he takes a bit too much time to get the ball and pass it on. And then there is his disposal.

I think we just have to perserve as his good skills are in short supply.

I didn't have a critical mindset at my age at the time, but what was the common opinion of Craig McRae at the same point in his career?

Akermanis is the better comparison. Bright start, but massive questions being asked about his career trajectory at around this point. Had fallen into a much bigger hole than Banners.

Easily could have been delisted. Was only when he was moved into the backline that it all suddenly clicked.

Aker had just a touch more natural talent, but.

Being the most frustrating player on the list doesn't necessarily equate to him being outside the best 22.

I still think he gives us plenty and we would be a worse side without him. It's just aggravating when you see how damaging he could be if he had better touch.

I can't remember when, but at some point on the weekend, we scored a goal on the back of 3 or 4, one after the other, 100% chasing/harassing efforts, by Toddy. You simply can't find that ferocity to attack the opposition player(s) in any other player on our list. He doesn't let up.

Round 6 vs Essendon

Brown's load up forward doesn't seem likely to be lightened any time soon if... small forwards such as Todd Banfield do a disappearing act on the scale of his scarcely noticeable presence yesterday.

I'd just like to see him put somewhere else to try and get him in the game. Chuck him in the centre for the bounce or make be accountable down back.

I'd like to see that but in the reserves. I was shut down for wanting to drop him last season but his confidence has now hit rock bottom and he needs to win some easy footy in the reserves.

Yeah I've been more patient that most with him but he's in a serious slide. Even his defensive impact is absent now. Needs to go back to a lower level and develop the belief again.

In the meanwhile, bring on Green.

Love Toddy and his defensive pressure and his X factor in the team but sadly it was just not there yesterday. He wasn't alone but he had a "shocker"...

In the same camp as TBD. I've defended him because even though he doesn't register many stats, he is our only one putting forward pressure on, which isn't a registered stat. But he is really out of form. I'd put him back in the 2nds for a solid 6 week period, play him in the guts and get his belief back. Green to come into the side.
