Delisted Todd Banfield (2008-2013)

Banfield is in some horrendous form. I wouldn't rule out him being delisted at the end of the year.

I would be absolutely astonished at his delisting if it was to happen. It'd be an amazing knee-jerk reaction given what we have seen in the past (and the persistence shown with players like Harding, Corrie, Sheldon, Polkinghorne and Hawksley). Maybe at the end of next year if nothing's changed, or he might be off our list if we get an offer that's too good to be true.

No doubt he is in really bad form. Delisting would surprise me.

I think he is quite simply being played out of position. Has absolutely no goal nous.

I think the plan of Todd becoming a long term small forward needs to be scrapped.

I think you'd find the fumbling disappear if played down back.Last night would have been the perfect game to give him a go.I sure as hell would hate him to be delisted before that was experimented with.

He is our Toddy, a work in progess.
Still hope one day things will just click with him.

Being able to cleanly handle the ball doesn't tend to just click though. It takes years of gradual improvement. Unless...

... maybe he should get his eyes tested. Sometimes players can have blurred vision and not realise it.

The fact that he keeps getting games would indicate that the coaching staff don't think he's a chance for delisting.
Scott Harding says Hi.

Toddy can go FWIW he is not going to improve. Fallen down the pecking order considerably, due to bad form and injury .

I can't think of too many less skilled players I have ever seen at the top level (ruckmen aside). Maybe Ben Fixter.

Did Scott Harding play 2 or 3 reserves games in 3 seasons? A lot more competition now than back then as well.
Granted, but I see Harding as an example of a 'confidence player' with whom Voss persisted and gave every opportunity to turn his form around. Harding played 15 games in '09, including the Blues final, but was still cut. While it is far from a given, I wouldn't be shocked if the same happened to Banfield if he doesn't show much in the next few weeks.

Jackess, you have advocated that he won't be delisted, but that argument is evidence for the contrary.

Pretty sure Jackess' point was that despite the increased competition Banfield has held his senior spot, which implies his position is more secure than Harding's. While that is possible, I'm not convinced it is the case.

Yeah that's it. Must remember Banfield has never been dropped. He either has been performing his role to a satisfactory level or the coaches see his potential being so high that it is worthwhile to invest games into him.

Yes, and my point was that increased competition is an argument that favours the prosecution, not the defence.

That's true, but his form has steadily declined for a while now, and he is seemingly on the verge of being dropped. Voss and co have shown a tendency to give incumbent members of the senior team every chance to regain their form. But if they can't do that, and it gets to the stage where the coaches lose patience with them, then they are on shaky ground.

Dropped (and not before time)

....and using the argument you've provided above, I wouldn't be totally shocked if we either de-listed him or traded for whatever we can get.

Banfield is one of the sloppiest players I can think of.....terrible hands at ground level, unreliable set shot for goal and seemingly impotent as a crumbing forward. And for all the hype about his "speed", can anyone recall him running down an opponent, or for that matter, being able to effectively run away from one?

And I for one, don't buy the "being played out of position" argument.

If he can't demonstrate adequate skills as a small forward, how on earth could he possibly cope with the pressure cooker that is the midfield?

While I agree Toddy lacks clean hands, is woefully out of form & deserved a run in the 2s let's not take Toddy bashing to an unrealistic extreme.

I have seen Toddy run a few people down over time & that run through the middle against the Crows is one example of him running away from people.

If you're talking about this year you might be right on those things but he has done those things in the past so let's not rewrite history to suit our arguments & tarnish a current Lion in the process.

I've wondered about this for some time. Does he wear contact lenses?

He has at least another year on his contract. Really hope he can rediscover his mojo in that time.

Are you sure? I thought at the end of 2010 he extended his original contract by another year, meaning it'd run out this season.

No extension length was stated here. Have you got another source? I'll be concerned for him if he's uncontracted.

Nothing but a feeling that he just extended by a year. After just one season in the seniors, wouldn't it have been unusual for them to commit to him for any longer than that? Would've meant he was essentially signing a three year deal after just one season, which by my memory is rare.
