This happened on Thursday with my mate at the WACA but i only got around to posting it now, so...

We were sitting a few rows from the front and witnessed security guards telling some guy to sit down or something(he was banging on the fence..it's the atmosphere) and i think he might've told him to get out or something. He then called in the cops who were talking to him and one of them was slightly pushing him. This was when i decided to videotape the thing with my mobile...after all it could've ended up being some police brutality(sell for $$$$ :D) After around 1 minute, a security guard told me 2 'put that phone away'. I'm like....wtf? I told him something like it's a free country but he told me i 'wasnt allowed to film'. I put it away or it'll be conviscated and given 2 me at the end of the day(sounds like school!). I didn't wanna cause trouble so i put it away...but i couldn't just sit there n the crowd was getting louder... so i just got my phone out and proceeded to film(It's my right). the security guard then yanked my shirt and told me that if i don't put my phone away in 5 seconds he'll take it away and i'll be kicked out of the WACA. I'm like...???? By this time, the cops proceeded to leave the guy and there was nothing to film...

He's not allowed to do that, right? Cos it's my own phone and this is Australia, not saudi arabia. The cops were overall shocking on the day: A chick flashed her t*ts and got kicked out of the ground...it didn't offend anyone and there were not little kids in the vicinity. Shocking. Absolutely shocking IMO.

Perhaps a little overzealous. There *could* be some reason to do with film rights at the ground having been purchased that might be used as an excuse to cover the security though.

I always assumed video cameras were banned and that mobile phones are now an extension of that anyway. You wouldn't have made any money anyway, the WACA or Cricket Australia would have owned it.

Yeah obviously channel nine would have exclusive telecast rights.

Although those mobile phone cameras don't exactly produce commercial quality vision, so it does seem a bit over the top.

Not usually allowed to take photos or vision at public events. Are you sure you weren't just trying to film girls flashing their t1ts? If I was the cops, I would have kicked ya out, and locked you up for a few days for being a pervert and a troublemaker.

With mobiles 3 has bought the rights to show expensive small out of focus video snips and the don't want any one to compete with them

This is where copyright laws fall down IMO

At what stage did the security guard ask him what his intentions were? It is only once he sells the clip he breaks the law.

I think it was overzealousness and would have challenged him..and kept on filming him as he beat me up :p

I had a similar experience with a digital camera at the Australia v Uruguay World Cup soccer qualifier at the MCG a few years ago; where after taking a few pics of the police using excessive force when kicking someone out was threatened with being arrested and charged - fortunately some other incident blew up and while the police's backs were turned I gave them the slip.
Goodness knows what they would have charged me with. Photography was banned in Afghanistan under the Taliban, but it remains legal in Victoria.

WACA security has been like that for ages. Basically it's all about ensuring no-one has fun. If you have fun, you have to go somewhere else.
