Tommy has cracked Robbo's Top 50 footballers for the end of season 2022, albeit at 43 (IIRC). Great tribute to the guts and determination of this guy and worthy entrant.

I've looked back at a lot of our games since the season concluded...that last quarter against Port from him was just incredible. Selwood-esque.

This is what I love about him the most, absolute modesty to the point of entirely down playing his importance to the team, and none of it is fake.
He genuinely (and perhaps rightly) believes he HAS to give it his all every single time he plays or trains and the second he doesn't he's out of the team, or preferred position.
In some ways he's right, Parfitt maybe should make his way back into the 22, Bruhn is lighting up the track and looks awesome, Clark will get his shot eventually, there's more than enough competition for Atkins spot, and they are all more talented than he is (not knocking him, but he's not in the team due to talent but instead dogged work rate and unending application to his role).

It is truly magnificent that a player like the Axe can make it at the very highest level. So many other players across the comp have him covered for talent. But very few come close to his level of endeavour and hunger for the contest. If ever there was such a phenomenon as a coach's favourite, surely our current #30 has to be close to the ultimate prototype.

And while he keeps treating every game as an honour and as if it was his last, he will continue to endear himself to so many fans of the hoops. Long may his footy fairytale last...

I think the biggest kudos you can pay to Atkins ( and Close, Stengle, SDK, Holmes, Miers et al) is that he / they are the barometer for Geelong now - not the PFD, Stewy types.

If Atkins has a great game and is on, we are a greater chance of winning. If PFD is off but they all still fire, we are the goods.

If PFD fires and Atkins and Co dont, IMO we are in more trouble.

Not say PFD and Stewy dont count - but the gap has closed and the faces on the barometer has changed.
