∵ they all need to be firing at the same time and generally they ain't. Smith and Max have dropped off a bit, though Max was good on the weekend.
The simple answer is we don't. We're ranked 2nd in the league for scores from stoppage differential. Bulldogs are 1st, Gold Coast are 3rd.
The extended answer for why we sometimes get beaten in midfield, is that we lack 4th/5th quality rotations, so when Smith + Holmes have a less effective game there isn't much to cover for them.

.On Atkins, I always thought Cameron Ling got as much out of what he had as any player I’ve seen at Geelong, it’s now Atkins. Unbelievable what he has turned his career into.

Tom's career panning out the way it has is testament to the work ethic and hunger of the man, to do everything in his power to succeed.
You just know that the guy is a head down, bum up, no bullshit kind of guy. He gets on with the job, avoids the media and has laser focus on his craft.
I loved his dry response the other day when asked about Bailey Smith's Instagram Tinder collaboration. "I know nothing about it and could not care less."
Extremely underrated by uninformed watchers.

Harsh. Not sure what he has done to be seen as just this ‘honest toiler come good’ He is no Chris Judd but definitely has vision and skills to go along with his terrier work ethic.
Plus contested ability and defensive know how is still under the talent umbrella. Skills and vision wise I agree, he's absolutely decent too. Makes a lot of smart decisions in tricky congested situations.
If Tom started off as an honest toiler (we can agree to disagree there), he's certainly come beyond just good in my estimations.
I've seen some bloody good country and suburban league players never get to the AFL precisely because they didn't have what it takes to make the next step.
Tom wasn't a first-round draft pick, wasn't on anyone's radar as a junior, and ultimately had to work his arse off and earn his list spot, and then retain his position in the senior side.
My post was intended to be complimentary to the man who is internally lauded as one of the most disciplined and respected players at the club. His career success to date is largely testament to his character and work ethic.
