Like to sorted - sorry I am infracted and can't do likes etc. Yes he should and will get a 3 year good deal as he is one who has dragged us on his back into contention this year, rather than the same olds like Skip and Stewart etc.

Who would have guessed 2 years ago he would be critical to our structures?

I apologise for asking naive questions. If a player is contracted on the rookie list does he have to stay in that status until the end of that contract?

Atkins isn't just playing good footy, he is now intrinsic to the team. Can he be given a senior contract early, with the rewards he deserves? Can another team pinch him with a lucrative offer?

I think you can upgrade them any time and he's still a Geelong player so he goes elsewhere he has to be traded.

To drop a player to rookie list you need to delist and then draft them in the rookie draft again and that's where you can lose a player the way the Suns list greenwood

I can't say precisely but from what I know about contract law and HR he will see out his contract unless another is put on the table now. But if that doesn't happen he would want to be fairly compensated going forward.

He and his manager would be thinking about what if he has a blinder going forward and smashes the finals - or not. It's a bit of wait and see on both sides I reckon.

EDIT: you don't have to apologise, we are all friends on here

Correct as far as I know

From GFC website:

Standing face to face with Melbourne’s premiership winning engine room in the middle of GMHBA Stadium last Thursday night, Atkins, unintimated, got to work.

Nice words and true. Not sure what unintimated actually means though
except for the spelling mistake, actually that's decent writing especially in this day and age of SM

Unintimated, like there was no hint or suggestion of him. May be a reference to the ignorance of the commentary team?

Yes it amazes me how crap media writing and grammar is

EDIT: Actually I'm not surprised, kids are more indoctrinated than taught basic skills and have been for many years in Oz.

Journos are trained to write at a high school level. Their writing needs to be really accessible to everyone
Since I was a kid, sports writing has been some stats and couple quotes. Too much media coverage already so not much need for actual writing. The sports columnists however still had skills, but they're extinct now as well.
The hey day was back in the first half of the 20th century. Writers had to capture the imagination of readers who couldn't watch games, and then later couldn't hear the radio broadcast.
from a movie but it captures the idea
"To see the three Chiefs make a scoring rush, the bright colours of their jerseys flashing against the milky ice, was to see a work of art in motion."

It's spilled over into the commentary too. Howard Cosell was one of last great describers.
"Then there is a still higher type of courage – the courage to brave pain, to live with it, to never let others know of it and to still find joy in life; to wake up in the morning with an enthusiasm for the day ahead."

mass communications defaults to the least common denominator :(

lol, the hype over this bloke is beyond anything I ever seen to date.
I know Shannon Neale garners praise usually only reserved for no.1 picks but Atkins is off the charts.

He's averaging 18½ touches, 8 of them contested possessions, 5½ tackles. He's a 27 year old journeyman. He's had a decent season to date but the hyperbole is a bit rich.

Accurate. Does deserve praise for his last game though but the talk is over the top

its nice to see you actually are even complimentary of his season at all.

Based on your proportion for praise, he's gonna win all the awards now.

Hes been great.

You are aware those are good stats for a borderline tagger who spent the first half the year as a defender right?

The fact that we're getting decent output out of a 27 year old journeyman like this and to me to be strong evidence of good coaching. That's what I'm excited about

I do wonder sometimes what some people want or expect. The guy is smashing it for us in the guts and yet it is still considered conditional. FFS.

He'd be right up there in the B&F & most improved, and as noted above Petracca and Oliver were trying to block him the other night.

He’s been good for weeks. The praise is proportionate to that.

20+ in 4 of the last 5 games since being moved to the midfield. Getting over 5 clearances per game which has gone some way to improving our grunt in the middle which we were struggling with in the first half of the season.

Tackling machine too.

How would you compare him to Parfitt

How would you compare him to Parfitt
Similar disposal output.
Better tackler - not in tackle count but ferocity.
Better kick.

I think Tom also attacks the loose ball a bit better, but if we play them in the same 22 (would be surprised if we didn't), that they could somewhat compliment each other and allow us to rotate the two of them through the guts/centre bounce

That would mean we keep a defensive mindset player at centre bounces, while still guys like Guthrie, Dangerfield, Selwood or our other more attacking midfielders to keep doing what they do best
