Thought its worth giving this mature first year afl player his own thread..

In line with many players from of VFL system we picked another in Tom Atkins.. going back to Matty Egan , maybe earlier we have been giving chances to those who were showing enough on the VFL field to suggest they have been missed. Egan became AA and it franked the idea of it can deliver good players and occasionally quality. Pods , Stewart .. and others .. some working well and others not working , the VFL pathway is worthy of exploitation and so although he was worthy of his shot , I was more thinking that its another player who fits in the values of being due his chance. A s much as him , it supports our VFL pathway and gives hope to those who have missed chances and encourages them to sign on the Geelongs VFL

So to me , drafting Tom A as a Rookie was no great head shake but no huge expectation thing either.. maybe the grass is always greener ..and the grass under our nose was a little under appreciated in my eyes..

And then the PreSeason noises started.. the verve the kept coming that Tom was impressing all..that he will be strongly pressing for best 22. Yes , yes , sure , sure ..this was keeping the mental hope of the fringe players up , but really ..unless we have a truck load of injures ..I doubt he pushes too hard for a spot. Maybe a game or two in the JLT ..like Constable last year..and he then slips back into a best support role for the best 22. Maybe a game in the middle of the year somewhere. Others more credentialed , others who have already played will demand selection

And then he played JLT. Very quickly he changed the frame of those thoughts ..this guy is not looking out of place.. from being a bit new in the setup but he was obviously ready to play. He tackled and chased like he enjoyed it , like it was not a task that he did cause he had to but with more the look of him being a wild cat hunting yet another slow bit of prey. This guy is going to get games and be best 22 for the first couple of games at least.

And he got those early games ..and has he looked back and put his feet up with the contented wild cat with a full stomach? Not at all.. in 7 games he has secured his spot even more tightly. I dont see him being replaced by anyone. From wondering where he would fit , perhaps someone who could add tackle pressure to a FP ..to now seeing him playing like a someone who is very comfortable trusting his mature body he can handle the heat of afl bodies , he is now seeing he can bust his way thru a tackle like more higly credential players , he can charge thru a tackle like a Bull even if he is more Bullant in his frame. He must have great core strength..and there is more to him than tackle and core strength. What I didn't really appreciate is he is he is a fine field kick..he finds his man more often than not and is not adversely affected by congestion , he makes mostly good choices. He has gone from being only FP pressure to be a very handy midfield cog in our midfield wheel. There is a lot of up side is this mature but young player.

I heard on the rado this morning ... other should clubs start to look at players like Sydney Stack and our Tom Atkins and throw some serious coin at them.. OOC at years end.. not sure what he would be on .. but the he is playing , the average wage of the afl is mid 300's and hed be worth that . although Id doubt we would have calculated him being worth more so quickly. Nice problem to have I guess but for the short term , I suspect he is just reveling in showing why ..he should have been picked earlier. Crameri was a nice story but really .. its obvious now Atkins should have been doing this 12 months ago.

I'll be honest - up until Sunday, I thought he'd been just ok. Doing his job as a role player, but limited in effect compared to the other newbies, and going missing in a number of games.

This weekend, he was excellent - and, I think, was playing in a role that he's just a bit more familiar with. I don't know that he's played small forward before in his life.

And it's good to see we finally have a sense of true Geelong balance: one genuine redhead, and one haircut from the late 80s.

He's as close to a new gen Max Rooke as you're going to get.
Is hard and tenacious, always gives everything he's got, is a hard tackler and is a sure user of the ball.
Will probably win more possessions than Max did and opens up a great rotation possibility going forward this year.
I love him. No doubt best 22 along with Miers.

I too thought he was a fairly limited hard nut role player (forward defensive specialist). But when he went into the midfield yesterday he just about tipped the balance for us. Love the Max Milburn description above about how he accelerates from the contest.

Love the way he accelerates out of trouble and uses it well even though he looks like he's about to fall over at any minute :) , fantastic balance.
Pressure forward who can change it up by giving us a different look in the midfield - doesn't mind a clearance !
He's not there specifically to be a main scoring threat but you get the feeling his turn will come as he's more than capable of doing some damage.

I think a rookie spot is fair if a guy shows something in the VFL good for our VFL side as players will want to play for our club win win not much to lose
I think that's three in four years - Atkins, Stewart and Ruggles.

And IMO Ruggles was really unlucky. Very good first season, dumped after one Barry Crocker in his first final, then a concussion and a collarbone in his second year, and then Tom Stewart happened.

Ruggles was, IMO, good enough to still be on an AFL list, perhaps just not ours.

Hes going well - cant compare him to Max Rooke - Rooke was a big man - i reckon about 6 ft 3 inc in the old where as Atkins would be lucky to be 6 ft

Atkins reminds me alot of Liam Picken of the Bulldogs - with his enthusiam and multiple efforts to win a single contest
Until he starts riding a Vespa, his resemblance to Max Rooke is purely coincidental.

Watched him last year and thought he was a waste of a pick. Didn't think his game would transfer to AFL. Better thab i thought he would be but will need to continue to play well to stay in the team.

Seems to be improving in every game.....you'd have to think hes a fixture at this stage of the season.

I recall many saying that our bottom half would have to step up if we were going to be competitive.....well Atkins is one of a number that have done just that.

Kudos to him....

100% this. He was so good in heavy traffic yesterday.

One goal in seven games ain't much chop for a so-called forward but he clearly has plenty to offer.

Plays with the chip - as they say in "Hamilton..."

"I am not throwing away my shot"
"I am not throwing away my shot"
"Just like my country im young scrappy and hungry"

Every game he plays.
Like him in VFL last year and was stout about him making it -pleased he's as good as he's been. Not sure his ceiling goes too much higher but its damn good where its at.
Credit to him

Breakout game for him yesterday. I didn't realise how good he is. Plays tough too. Shook off a heap of tackles.
Agree 100%. You really noticed him yesterday; he was like a bull in a China shop

What has impressed me as much as anything is how quick a thinker he is...
Yesterday at one point Saad almost ran him down, he thought his way through the situation to just avoid being caught... Later on he grabbed the ball and knowing Saad again was on his hammer instantly kicked it, I'm not even sure he actually had finished picking the ball up when he kicked it. That really made me take notice of just how good his smarts and awareness are.

Early days I thought he was just a trier but since getting a hit on the ball against the Hawks and since I have been blown away basically. Potentially just an absolute steal
