MVP Tommy Boyd - The Grand Final Enigma

Big effort from Tom, had to play a huge amount of the game in a very tough position and didn't stop giving it everything all night. Hopefully recovers well for the big one next week and can slot back to only 20% or so rucking!

Mark Robbo wrote a article this morning called
Tom Boyd Delivers
Ill assume he tagged his own infamous tweet in the article?

Immense. His effort to compete was immense. He touched it out with a gorilla and didn't die. Last night, and this Finals series, will be the making of Tom. He's now worked out he can compete with the big boys on an even footing.

Look out next year.

Well I guess we won the Tom Boyd trade....
We won the preliminary final nothing more. Could you set the bar any
lower, i am sure most fans would have hoped for more goals and less
ruck time. The constant backslapping on this thread could further
damage his shoulder which already requires off season surgery.

chin up ole chap we are playing for the cup next weekend for the first time in a little while

I'm such a proud supporter of Tom (we traded for him when he was a zygote and everyone wanted the Second Coming in his first game with the club) - there has been a lot of shitalking, but last night took the cake, Tom Boyd has arrived. He stepped up and he's looking the goods. Can't wait to see this team at the MCG next week!

I cannot believe we're in the Big One! Go Dogs!

Lighten up a bit. We're in the Grand Final and he helped us get there, which is more than you or I did.

Did you just write that dismissively? Ridiculous.
Oh we just won the only preliminary final in our history and a 21 year old stood up against one of the best and mature rucks in the comp...nothing more o_O

Tall poppy syndrome is pretty insidious. That may not, or may, be playing out here but you know someone will try take the shine off, or move the goal posts everytime he earns some credit. People would rather be right than happy.

Tom had to do a mountain of work, he did it well and in the face of a very strong opponent. It was an inspirational effort for mine.

I Have never been to pick a part, but i don't need to go. Mutt suggested
we won the Boyd trade that is all, i think we should wait a week before
the gloating starts. Tom Boyd competed magnificently on Saturday and
i even gave him an honourable mention in the ching votes, but it also
showed how far off an AFL tank he is as his two kicks and 12 handballs
were down at 50 odd percent effective. I expected 25 to 35 goals this
year not for Tom to morph into some kind of pseudo ruckman as an
excuse not to kick goals, one goal in his last seven games is piss poor.
Maybe that explains the Travis Cloke situation because even Link
the rottie has a problem with the logic there.

You're being ridiculous. You know you're being ridiculous right?

How about Cameron and Patton both being into him after the Lobbe mark in the 3rd...

...after Lobbe kicked the goal, Patton is clearly yelling, "[Something] (how's that?) Boydy".

Just wow.

Cameron 5 touches, 1 mark, 1 tackle.
Patton sh1t himself late when the game was on the line, and then ranted at the umpire about a mark that he wasn't even looking at...

...meanwhile, after an average start, Tom rucks 75% of the game and still has time to be competing at either end.

They both should be embarrassed. While we, should be thankful.

Patton shat himself twice in the same passage of play.

Plus he has a tiny pimple head.

He must learn to mark the ball or get fixed whatever injury is preventing him from marking the ball. Of course that is his gig - marking the ball and kicking goals, and thats how he should be measured.

But the other facets of his game are coming along.

He is more use to us as a key forward / ruck, even with his bung shoulder than Grif is to GWS as a midfielder with his bung back. Grif is more or less cooked physically and he isnt the leading type anyway - the irony of poaching another teams captain who wanted to leave because it was all too hard, in order to provide leadership for your own struggling team...

Effectively we traded Tom for pick #6, plus some steak knives (Griffen). If we want to talk about winning trades, its how good is Peter Wright or Jake Lever going to be, not how well is Grif travelling.

Another epic title change. Positively cannot wait for it to reach its inevitable crescendo Saturday night.

Its interesting that the main board thread was bumped again over the weekend and besides a couple of the usual obsessive dickheads. There is little doubt that the tide of public opinion is started to come into line with what most of us have been saying for quite some time.

Worth noting that despite Mumford having many many more hit-outs, Tom had close to the same number of hit-outs to advantage.

I am still impressed by the amount of running he is doing this year compared to last year, much much improved tank. He could surprise everyone (including me) and end up playing a high forward role with the way his running has improved.

It only occurred to me relatively recently that Roughy has really lifted this year - in his 8th season on the list and after being average for years. Obviously Boyd should be hitting the scoreboard more, but his best is yet to come and I'm looking forward to seeing it :)
