Tom Boyd

Some draft picks work, some, like De Goey, don't. But we all keep soldiering on.
Hahah, wat? Second year player averaging nearly 20 posessions a game, barely missed a game, and you're making that call? If you're going to attempt to deflect a recruiting error surely you can do better than that...

Very early to judge that. Shown plenty for a young kid IMO.

He was excellent last year, but IMO he's been disappointing this year. Hardly deflection, just an opinion. Like yours.

If improving in every statistical category in a players second year is disappointing, I'll take it. Once he builds his tank more and starts playing in the middle instead of forward/mid he'll be a 25-30 disposal clearance machine.

And yes, it was a deflection. The thread is about Tom Boyd. The "yeah but player X was a bad pick" statement is as big of a deflection as you could possibly make, even if it is your honest opinion. They aren't mutually exclusive.

Ok then, your opinion on Tom Boyd is off the mark.

The only people who know more about their players are punters. As someone who has the occasional wager on the footy (read every game) I've been very disappointed in Jordan. He is slow, he makes poor decisions and his disposal is poor. Having said that, as you quite rightly point out, it's his second year. He is a bull, but other than his combative nature, I haven't seen any traits which scream A Grade to me.

But I could be wrong, as you are about Boyd.

I don't believe I actually put forward an opinion on Boyd himself as a player, just of the trade itself. If you want my 2c on Boyd, I think he has all the right tools to become a very good forward, and over time, if he stays at the Bulldogs, will likely over time become the focal point of your forward line.
Will he ever become good enough to justify the million dollar long term contract he's on? Doubtful. Will he ever be good enough to justify giving away the equivalent of two top 10 picks and steak knives? Extremely doubtful. And that was my point. The trade itself has been nothing short of extremely poor value, and is unlikely to ever look like it will be, given you could have picked up a possible combo of Wright and Lever if you had traded Griffen for GWS' pick 8(?) and had your book ends for the next decade, in addition to having an extra $800k in the bank to chase a marquee player if the opportunity arose.

Griffen and Pick 6 is the equivalent of two top ten picks?

Maybe at the time, but right now Griffen is looking more like a third rounder. We offloaded him at the right time.

The contract was excessive (although Carlton and St Kilda had offered similar), but the trade price looks better by the day.

I doubt anyone has an issue with the trade price. His contract is what people generally cant believe. He is getting a similar salary to Buddy this year and doing nothing.

What's he's worth now is irrelevant. At the time of trade there was debate over whether Beams or Griffen were the better player. Beams netted Collingwood pick 5, 25 and Crisp. Griff was older, but it's not unreasonable to think that GWS would have handed over pick 8 for him given his standing in the game at that point.

There's still some consternation over giving up "your captain and pick 6" for him. Moving the pick looks iffy, but when a guy commits to your club you pay the price. If we leave him in the lurch after requesting a trade, what message does that send to any other players you try to get across in the future?

The contract though, I can understand. It's absurd money for the output we're getting. When he's on $500k at the top of his game in a few years, it will suddenly look pretty good, but too many people don't think he'll get there. He will.

For a player with questions over his mentality, a slipped disc in his back, and coming off his worst season in 7 years? Griffen was washed.

Perhaps with more time we could've banged out a more even trade (reflective of his standing at the time, as you say), but if they get him up there for a medical the trade is probably off.

That worst season still produced a 23 disposal, 5 clearance per game average, in addition to the fact he was your club captain.

But the doggies are still paying part of his salary.

$900k in total, $800k paid last year and the balance paid in 2017. Did you read the article?
I read the article at the time, and it's incorrect.

It would've been outside competition rules to continue paying him beyond the duration of his original contract with us (end of 2015).

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But, I reckon if the dogs had their time again, they would have kept their $7M and taken 2 meter Peter

Probably correct. But at the time, given the situation the club was in - and the fact we weren't sure if he would be available with that selection - it was a risky move to just take the draft pick. Even if purely symbolic, we needed to push back.
