Has he ever actually had a breakout game? He’s taken some decent grabs, looks fairly mobile, but never seen him actually dominate a game or do anything to suggest he’s worth more than the pick he was taken with.

For comparison, Lewis Young was traded for Pick 52 (three way trade with SPS) while playing for a better side. This talk of huge contracts and first rounders makes no sense

Young was at a better club, but you couldn't really argue the point that he was playing for them. 24 games across 5 seasons.

By comparison, Tom has played 24 games for Carlton since the start of last season, and we're only 8 rounds into the year.

The media have a lot to answer for here. Johnno Brown described him on Monday night as a “generational talent”, worth “two first rounders”. What absolute nonsense.

At least by the time Rhys Stanley was traded he’d had a breakout dominant game of

19 disposals
14 marks (3 contested)
13 hitouts
5 marks inside-50
3 goals 2
2 Brownlow votes

And had shown the versatility to play a season down back, as well as of course showing he could play forward and ruck. (Averaged a goal a game in his last two seasons playing forward/ruck).

What's to say TDK doesn't have a game like that this season ??

Exactly. Heath is coming along really well and looks like he could be another Marshall type, while Keeler is a freak-show, who has more natural football talent than half an AFL list. Then there’s Caminiti, and why the hell would we want to have TDK likely pushing him back into the ressies!? With Hayes also up our sleeves.

SOS’s chronic narcissism looks like it’s running the show as per usual.
Maybe he wants TDK so he doesn't take Jack Silvagnis place in the Carlton side.

I get why Carlton would want to keep going with him. He’s the prototype for the modern ruckman (mobile, athletic, decent contested mark) if he can develop properly. I just don’t understand any other clubs wanting to spend big on him when they could just go straight to the draft for a speculative ruck without paying the supposedly premium price tag

Nothing. But as of right now he hasn’t, yet in spite of that he’s being described as a “generational talent” worth “two first rounders”, and nonsense like this, while Rhys HAD played a game like that, was similarly an athletic freak, who was versatile and had big upside, yet he went for just pick 21, and probably about $500K PA, or maybe even less.

Agree in principle, TDK still has to deliver that one blockbuster game to justify the supposed big money offers that are expected to come.

I'm near certain that the Saints will make an offer he can't refuse though.

In the VFL!

Journo's dream up some rubbish for clicks, last year for months Dusty was off to Sydney, was always crap, just making stuff up.

This year they made up huge $ offers for a Carlton VFL player who's never done much, but has a nice highlight reel

What is Tommy's latest future value?

Marshall is just a far better TDK. Both are better suited as the number one ruckman. In theory both should be good forwards.

Tom has not shown a heap up forward but I get the feeling he’d look better in Harry’s position instead of next to him. He does not get a heap of looks when we go in tall.

King at FF, TDK at CHF and Caminiti/Membrey floating could work well. And Owens looks like a nightmare match up who can play tall or small. I see the appeal.

Caminiti is looking a much better forward prospect than TDK at the moment so it would leave TDK still playing that third tall/ruck type that he hasn't had any success at so far.

Feels like we'd be left with exactly the same issues Carlton have with him

Carlton can't expect to get much for him if he is constantly in the reserves, it's not like he has been impressive when he has played.

He got concussed at the worst time as we had the bye in the VFL last week. No need to rush him back against an undersized Collingwood side on what will probably be a miserable afternoon.

Suspect he plays against Sydney.

I feel TDK is someone with a lot of potential but people are also assuming that he's just as good as his brother when that isn't really the case. I suspect that at best he'd attract a late second round pick but most likely is just a pick swap for like a pick in the 20s for a pick in the 40s.

Carlton will look back on this in five years time in the same way they look at drafting Boekhorst etc.

Woeful mismanagement.
