Geelong has a pretty decent record of walking away if the deal doesn't look like it fits. Can't see it getting that far with us. We would just congratulate him on the big contract at Sydney and invite him on surfing trips instead. That has never been how it works. Players don't nominate clubs if its clear that a deal will not be possible and in the cases that they do, deals don't get done. If Carlton set the price of a top 20 pick and Geelong say our final offer would be a F2 then he'd be advised simply to not nominate them. All the list and player managers acknowledge that on podcasts and interviews, thats exactly what happened in the Cerra trade too.
Then theres the added 'levers' of the PSD and National draft threats. Geelong doesn't have the picks or the position on the ladder to do either. Geelong wouldn't take him with their first in a national draft situation, if they would they'd just trade it to Carlton for him. In a PSD situation Carlton, Sydney, Essendon and StK will all be a chance of finishing below you so there's no way he'd make it through to your pick in that situation. The empathetic homesick move is also not in play because he's not actually from Geelong, he'd only be wanting to get there to play with his brother and surf.
So really there's no haggling Carlton down in this situation. He's got interest from multiple clubs who are in better positions than you are to get a deal done and he'd be well aware of that. If its clear to the clubs and player managers that they are worlds apart on their valuations of him then it's pretty simple... He would nominate somewhere else.
