I've worked immensely hard on my ability to understand all areas of the games, something my wonderful colleague Leigh Matthews has helped me with. As for my apparent favouritism of some sides, my wife follows Sydney and therefore I certainly have a soft spot for them..

I suppose not many of you understand how a commentary team works. Bruce and Dennis call the action, while Leigh and myself add expert opinions. It may seem like my comments are slightly "on the fence", but that is only because I'm a fan of the game first and foremost.

A few words of advice on how I can improve would be nice, rather than just attacking me..

Not sure if you're really tom Harley but can you tell us do other footy players read bigfooty? How do they deal with hurtful comments? I'm sure it could cause depression reading so many negative
 
No need to change Tom-us princesses will just have to toughen up. Next thing you know we'll be weeping and wishing gazza would come back.
 
Tom, great call of the GF, also great to hear Bruce right on top of his calling once again. I've watched the replay three times and you guys were right up with every little thing that happened and even ahead of it.
During the year Bruce gets too much on the entertainment side, too much congratulations between him and Dennis on how good they are, but in the GF all that all went and Bruce got very serious which was great.
Also the camera editor stayed with the play at boundary throw-ins and forward-line marks and didn't show replays while real play was still happening (for example when Hawkins handpassed to Johnson in the 2011 GF, the TV was showing a replay).
Just one example of great calling was how you immediately said how Goodes had done his PCL ten years ago in the ruck for Sydney. But there were dozens of examples. Very early on Leigh Matthews says how Buddy had kicked 4.16 in Hawthorn losses this year.
The calling matched the great play that was happening on the ground.
Well done.

If it IS Tommy-gun I was wondering if you could do something humorous on air for the entirety of the next season. Whenever the need to say "can't" arises, would it be possible to substitute it with that rude 'c' word that rhymes with 'stunt'?

I swear, nobody will catch on except folk who have read this thread. It will be piss-funny I guarantee it.

Next time you see a bloke who won a Norm Smith on the way to making you a premiership captain get cleaned up in the opening 20 seconds of a game, try saying "the match review panel will probably look at that," instead of "nothing in it".

Well, at the end of the day, he was proved correct, wasn't he? Do we want the likes of Healy, Brereton, Matthews, Johnson, Richardson, Frawley, Darcy, Roos etc. cheerleading for the teams that they have an allegiance to? If Thompson had been given six weeks, then Harley would have looked a bit silly, but the MRP decided Thompson had no case to answer, so in the end, he was spot on (even though I thought Thompson was going to get suspended at the time).

Only got off because they thought J.C. Pushed him, but that's not the point I'm trying to make, just an example. I would of thought saying the MRP will look into it ( and not say he is guilty or innocent), is better than just saying he'll get off.
 
I think a better example of his reverse bias was the Swans game at home this year.
Chappys hit? High, intentional and blood, a case to answer. (correct though)
Grundys hit on Pods? not much there (incorrect by a LOT).
I think thats the point people are making, its not we want him to barrack for Geelong we just dont want him to be biased AGAINST Geelong.
I had no issue with what he said about that chappy hit until his comment on Grundy.

he can't be biased though as the TV executives will give him the bloody chop and he's forced to work a real job.

Only the old farts like Bruce, Lethal and who ever still has a pulse can make their own calls and Tom's relatively fresh in the industry.
He needs to express a little more though than what he does, the robotic typical one liner,

Bruce: "What is it about this group? They are just so resilient"
Tom: "I think it just comes from the culture Bruce"

You know, he needs to give a little more than what we may already know.

But he has been posting under that Alias in Bay 13 since 2010....... Surely people on Bay 13 wouldnt lie.....

Pretty silly thing to get upset about. There was nothing in it. And saying the review panel would have a look at it, does not mean the review panel would have a look at it, despite what every Bigfooty poster seems to think.

Also Harley wasn't captain when Stevie J won the Norm.
