Re: Should Harley play on?

I don't think we can say whether he should or not. However would i like him to? Yes he is an important part of our team both on and off the field. Do i think he could? Sadly i think his body is a bit far gone to manage another year of Afl football.

Re: Should Harley play on?

If I were in his position, I would want to go out on a high as captain of a premiership side. There's plenty of other worthy candidates for the captaincy, and there's no guarantee he'll stay in the side next year.
We probably won't hear an announcement for a while, but I'd put my money on him retiring.

Re: Should Harley play on?

I want him to go on a high note.

He has been a brilliant role model to all at the club Id say.

I hope that he gets Life membership though.

If this can be sorted, would be awesome for him to step down at the Carji night to get the standing ovation he deserves..

Re: Should Harley play on?

His body has struggled to come up the last few years, and I think the win on Saturday is a good time for him to go out.

Someone mentioned needing to get games into Gillies. That is true, but more importantly we need to get him out there while we still have Scarlo, Boris and Dasher to teach him.

Re: Should Harley play on?

His leadership off the field is as important as it is on, having said that it appears his body is telling him it's time.

Would love to have him stay on at the club in a mentoring role.

Re: Should Harley play on?

I reckon you're right. His leadership seems crucial. Would be a shame to see him leave Geelong for somewhere else, in any capacity. I really rate him.

Have a think about it. His body is knackered, was basically guided through this year. He is NO chance of being picked up as a player. He is getting married and most possibly moving to Sydney and I'd expect it will be the AFL picking up his services before the Swans pounce.
I agree I really rate him. Both as a player but more so as a very smart and commited person. I think he knows its the right time and didn't wat to say as much while all the gloss was wrapped around the win.

Re: Should Harley play on?

I am happy to give him the 2 games next year then chuck him on the long term injury list. I don't think this one spot on our playing list will be very significant next year or in 10 years.

Re: Should Harley play on?

Bomber was on SEN this morning saying he'd be willing to give Tom the games he needed to make it to 200.

Re: Should Harley play on?

There's been a reasonable amount of attention and speculation on Tom's future in the aftermath of the grand final victory.

According to the man himself, the club has left it up to him to decide whether he will retire or continue playing next season.

Andrew Mackie has been quoted today as saying he believed Tom can and should play on.

Many media pundits have predicted that the grand final was his swansong.

Personally as much as I love and respect him, I think Tom should retire on the highest note possible: dual premiership captain. He will forever be remembered as one of the most inspirational leaders who transformed the playing group's culture and led our club to greatness in the modern era. His catchcry "We are Geelong" will forever resonate with us supporters.

The reasons I think he should retire are obvious: his body is shot, he looks old and slow on the field, and his place in the side is better used to blood a young defender like Gillies while Scarlett and Milburn still have a few years left to teach the kids.

I believe this decision will have a bigger impact on our premiership hope in the next few years than it may appear.

i know we want to get some games into gillies but dont forget we'll have josh hunt coming back next season who can fill harleys place in the team

Yeah according to the Herald Sun Bomber wants Harls to play 2 more games for us to reach 200, which is a very nice gesture by the club.

Does anyone know how that would affect the list salary-cap wise? Does he retire and get put on the long-term injury list for the rest of the year?

Undoubtably he would be on whatever the AFL minimum wage is, and yes you would expect him to be placed on the long term injury list.

Re: Should Harley play on?

Well if theres no other way around him getting the life membership, first game against the saints, then second and last game at KP unfurling the flag!

Then we can promote Ranga from the rookie list yeah?

Re: Should Harley play on?

I reckon his time has come. I would not have a problem with him getting a couple more games for the 200 - but I have a feeling his body is shot and he just can't keep up any more. One more long preseason might just be the end of him.

Re: Should Harley play on?

i'd like to see him retire. he brings a lot in terms of leadership, but on form he struggled to keep his spot this year.

Re: Should Harley play on?

I think Tom should enjoy a retirement up in Sydney with his wife etc.

Next year's backline could look something like this:

B: Hunt Scarlett Mackie
HB: Wojo Taylor Enright

Still pretty good with Dasher, McKenna, Laidler etc to back up.

l would have kelly and gillies in that backline before wojo but the back 6/7 look pretty good for next year.l think tom should call it a day he had been so dam good to take on the skipper role and now has 2 preimerships if he gets to play on to get to 200 games that would be a fairytale.

Re: Should Harley play on?

the man deserves to go out how he wants too, karnt argue with the mayor of geelong

Re: Should Harley play on?

Harles has been a good player for us and a fantastic leader. I'd hate him to go a year too long. He's served us really well but I reckon times up as a player. He'd fill an off-field role well but I suspect he'll end up in Sydney after his marriage probably filling a role with the new Sydney club.

Re: Should Harley play on?

As far as I'm concerned Tom Harley can do whatever the hell Tom Harley wants to do. He has delivered greatness to this club, and infinite happiness to myself - enough credits to go out how he likes. 200 games would be great, especially if it's at KP after unfurling the flag.

He said that on on the couch. that is what the essendon did for bomber.

Re: Should Harley play on?

I suspect Harley will retire. For an ordinary "foot soldier" it would be a big thing getting to 200 so the extra work needed would be done and the milestone celebrated hard.

Harley is no ordinary foot soldier. His reputation is set in gold not just at Geelong but across the AFL. He will retire as a dual premiership captain and I reckon on 198 games.

He has more important work to do in the AFL in the years ahead.

Re: Should Harley play on?

1. We have salary cap issues
2. He is going to move to Sydney with his very soon to be wife
3. It would be great to see him get to 200 games

Anyone seeing a similar case to what we did with Steven King? Harley to the Swans for virtually nothing?
