Re: Tom Harley needed to retire- earlier this week!

Liberal Leadership
Out: Turnbull
In: Harley

As it goes with most footballers, I had no idea of Tom's political leanings. Actually the only Geelong-related leanings in that regard that I know of are Damian Drum and Billy Brownless, who are both National Party voters.

Damian Drum even entered politics on the National Party ticket

So is there any evidence that Harley leans to the right?

Re: Tom Harley needed to retire- earlier this week!

There is an easy solution to this problem:

Tom plays his 3 games, gets the send off he deserves, then has a mysterious "accident" at training which causes him a career ending injury, we put him on the LTI, elevate a rookie, and Tom rides off into the sunset (aka Sydney).

We keep a full list together, and Tom gets the appropriate send off.

Everyone wins.

i really don't think the 2-3 games thing is a serious option in this day and age. i mean, you can't put your heart into a pre-season knowing you're only going to play 2-3 games. and if you're out there early next year and you're not fit you'll be exposed in the modern game. reading what bomber said about that idea i don't think he was even serious when he said it.

to me it has to be all or nothing. and i don't think any of us will look at tom harley, the 198 game dual premiership captain any differently to tom harly, the 200 game dual premiership captain.

I agree with this. Also, as nice and honourable as it is, I think by Harley playing the two games needed to get to 200 is the Geelong Football Club putting the individual ahead of the team. A 'no-no' in my book.

Also as pinion mentioned, it'll be hard putting in a full preseason knowing this. Also I don't think Harley is any better than the next defender, who is also younger and with greater upside.

Everyone has their day, and I think it has come for Tom.

I'd hate to miss the top 4 or top 8 by a close loss after we didn't put our best team on the field, just so Harley could play 200 games.

Putting the individual ahead of the team? Don't you think that's what they did by trading Steven King and Brent Prismal so cheaply?

Not Prismall, as he was under contract, and if we did not take pick 39 we would receive nothing. Also I am under the impression that King was given in a deal involving St Kilda accepting the salary in Gardiner's contract - although accept some goodwill was present too. I think it is good that Geelong has become a club with morals, rather than just a business - but I do think there isn't much to gain here.

We didn't trade either of those guys cheaply.

We set them up at the club they wanted and got **** all in return. We did the right thing by them for whatever reason. We should've got more from Prismal, but he wanted to go to Essendon and rather than let him float in the PSD we sent him where he wanted to go. Similar situation with Steven King and StKilda.

I agree about the morals part. I think part of the reason we have all these star players playing for each other and not worrying so much about the size of their pay packet is because they know the club is there to look after them. Matthew Egan is a case in point. He did his bit for the club and put it all on the line and the club stuck by him. Players know that they're not going to be stabbed in the back like they might at another club. In the case of Harley, if he thinks he can't complete the season, I'm sure he'd be the first person to step up and say that he's not going to fill a spot on the list just to make 200 games. If some deal can be worked out though, which I know the club is trying to put to the AFL whereby he can reach his 200 games, I'm all for it.

Agreed...and Tom's a good team man, unless he thinks he can play a whole season, he won't stay on for another year. That way another young bloke comes onto the list, and someone like Gillies gets more game time.

Ah well, we'll soon know what Tommy decides to do.

correct me if i'm wrong - isn't he veterans listed? (or at least eligible to be next year?) and thus not taking up a spot on the senior list anyway?

We already have two on the veterans list (Milburn and Scarlett), I don't think we can have any others. From memory, they take up the spots that a rookie might also take. A few years ago when we didn't have much veteran's we used up all of our rookie spots, which I think is four.

It will be interesting which way he will go.

Tom became eligible to be a 'veteran' for the 2009 season but we chose not to nominate him and that won't change if he plays on.
Making Tom a veteran would only cost us cap space so it'd be a pointless exercise.

Also, because we already have two veterans, making Tom a veteran wouldn't free up a list spot as he'd have to be a 'veteran on the senior list'.

We're allowed 44 players, with six of those being veterans/rookies outside the senior list.
If you've got two players on the veterans list, you can only have four rookies, and if you've got no veterans you can have six rookies.

Also, there is no limit on the number of veterans you can have but only two of them can be put on the veterans list and thus excluded from the senior list, any others you have become 'veterans on the senior list'.

Play on Tommy! Cat legend. Worst case scenario is his body does not come up and he retires, what have we lost? Best case scenario he is around the club another year, teaches our young defenders and footballers how we play the game and may even play some good footy.

He is a humble and unselfish man, we lose nothing by letting him go around again.

He wasn't so humble and unselfish when dropped back in 2007. Go read 'The Mission'.

Harley knows he is well passed his prime but would be top 3 paid players at our club, if not highest paid.

Another year hiding him in the backline while stunting the growth of a promising young defender? Thats a loss!

Re: Harley

I've noticed this too (arrived way too early at the Blues match the other week and only had the Record to read).

If we won straight through to the Grand Final and were good enough to win it - leaving Tom on 199 - I'd personally love the romanticism of Harley playing our first Skilled Stadium match in 2010 after unfurling the flag, then retiring after being chaired off by his team-mates and formally handing over the captaincy... Surely it's not too much to ask, is it? :p

Of course, the idea of having an opportunity to celebrate your 200th match by holding the premiership cup is also appealing - but I'd prefer the first scenario, because it would mean that we won in straight sets. ;)

Hmm... I think I now prefer this fantasy realm to the real world and really don't wanna go back. Haha. :D

It's even better when your fantasy realm becomes the real world :thumbsu::thumbsu::D
