Roast Tom Hawkins’ goalkicking

It was longer than that. His kicking had been pretty poor for most of the year. Just look at his accuracy stats pre-last night.
And late last year too.

All career. When on, he is perfect; other days, if he misses the first shot, he seems to drop confidence. Just not always reliable, but he creates so many opportunities that he is an absolute gun. And looking at the tables, it backs up how great he is. Who really is more reliable?
Just a few interesting comparisons. I admit to having been overly critical of Tomahawk.
620 goals, 350 behinds. 240 goal assists
JC
440 goals, 250 behinds, 90 goal assists
Gary Rohan
160 goals, 90 behinds, 80 goal assists
GAJ
445 goals, 337 behinds, 261 goal assists
Taylor Walker
470 goals, 300 behinds, 165 goal assists
Josh Kennedy
670 goals, 370 behinds, 140 goal assists

The numbers disagree with you Vdubs.

One thing you can bank on with Tom is when it’s not going well it’s not down to technique...

He knows his routine and knows when he is kicking it well. Puts him ahead of most. That shot with the hand dropping the ball and the outrigger is classic. Something Sav needs to work on .

To kick with a slight hook is natural as the leg swings across the body. To kick left to right requires a precise drop and a precise contact with the boot in order to achieve his slight slice. It doesn’t take much of a drop in confidence to affect his kicking.

Natural depends on several things. If you look at the period when Hawkins was dropping the ball outside... it was when he kicked the goal after the siren to beat Haw , he made an effort to kick that way with a draw. I think his back and how loose it feels plays a role in how he kicks now, what is natural etc is what you are most comfortable with. Hawk does hold it a little too central etc for perfect tech but its very repeatable and he knows his shape.

One might make the argumant that in this era , to be able to shape it that way in one pocket and the hook the goal in the other, allows him to have a chance to be happy either side. Even Camerons action means he not overly happy in the left pocket.

Is hawkins the best kick in our side? Not just at goal kicking but in general play as well?
The only one who would challenge him would be Duncan. But I think Hawkins is more creative and has better vision inside 50.

Yes hawkins does have amazing vision.

a very under appreciated skill in the game.
Vision, absolutely! Not sure about kicking.. Duncan, Tuohy, Stewart are all beautiful kicks too imo. Hawkins does after all have a tendency to inexplicably lose some confidence in front of goals every now and then. More than makes up for it in setting up twice as many for his teammates.
