Played cricket against him yesterday. Got him out actually. Smashed the crap out of a short piece of crap to get caught at square leg.

Anyway, the boy is HUGE! Seriously, after he went out he came out of the rooms without a shirt on and man, well, I am starting to sound a little homosexual.

I had a chat to him because one of my teammates is friends with him, and he said he definitely wants to come to Geelong next year, which is great news for us. Didn't seem at all reluctant.

When he comes to the club..

Ottens
Playfair
McCarthy
Lonergon
Kingsly
Gardiner
Mackie
NA

Whos going to go/delisted? Atleast one, and keep another 1 or 2 for depth, but who?

Well at the moment Macca is the obvious one. Lonners would be the other, but he could prove himself this year, and is apparently well liked among the playing group.

I guess everyone else will say Charlie, but I think he'll do well this season.

I HOPE he does well, but if he does or not is very different. Plus, even if he broke into the team it would be his first full season so he might tire late in the season.

After Henry retires. ;)

Nothing against H, he is our best option right now and maybe for sometime but "IF" the wraps are right then H will have to find another spot.Becaue unless you are the best any club will always look to improve by playing the more talented player. Right now, in our best side, with no injuries. CHF is our bigest chink. If we had big bad Johnathon Brown in our side we would be outright Flag favourites because others see H as proficient but not much more and really they are probably right.

I'll wait and see with Hawkins, he sounds exciting, but his physical advantage ia against schoolboys. It'll be intersting to see how he plays against the big boys (quite literally)
That's a good point. I s'pose we all just assume natural progression from school to seniors but there is a huge difference. I mean, I've played in the same comp as Hawkins and done OK, but I am no where near being close to anywhere near a VFL Reserves boot shiner.

upside. Hawkins is still only a kid, will have some more growing over the next 5 years. will be a behemoth by the end of it, and hopefully retain his much spoken-of mobility.

Hi everyone.

I might put up some more detailed information on the draft board about Hawkins later. But at this stage he is a giant and has a huge body already. Is listed at 198cms and 97kgs. The thing with him was when he played TAC last year in the last 3 games he looked very comfortable at the higher level and playing against most players who are older than him.
He got a lot of the ball in the last game he dominated. I have seen that game
and they played him at full forward. He took a number of very strong marks and kicked 5 goals. They also played him at CHF in the other 2 games.
Warncock was the ruckman for Sandringham.
He is big but athletic and moves well and takes a mark like a key forward and not a ruck.

However he will most likely become a ruck at AFL level. I would have him at about 15 in the upcoming draft. It is a very strong one and if for example a player like him was available in the last draft he would have gone well inside the top 10. I dont know what it is about Geelong and the father/son but when you have it you might as well flaunt it.

Heard on SEN last year that he played for Bentleigh seniors on an off week (no school commitments) and kicked 5 early in the year. Not sure of the standard there but has played against men which isn't a bad thing.

Bobby Davis was talking about him with KB.

Did they say anything else??

Interesting point of view.

I generally agree that he has the tools to become a ruckman at the top level with his size, leap, and handy tap work, but I'm more of the opinion his overall value would be maximised up forward - especially to this team.

He has far too many things going for him as a CHF option that a general failure to utilise them would be poor management of his abilities. Assuming ruck duties in the forward half whilst playing as the key option seems a better projection. Perhaps even a poor mans Ottens-esque role is on hand down the track, who knows.

Fair enough. I am going to assume the 198cms grows some more and will perhaps lose some agility and speed with that. Naturally helping him as a tap ruckman but taking away from his ability to accelerate.
If he stays at 198 then he might develop into a forward but seems pretty unlikely that a 17 year old is not going to get taller.

I have only seen him play on 2 occasions at TAC level. 1 live and 1 on tape so its hard to judge but what I wrote earlier are my early thoughts on him. Strong hands and is capable of taking a contested mark in the Brad Ottens mold but I think Hawkins will be a more physical type of player who also has good hands but can crash the pack and be more mobile as well.

No doubt, the capacity for growth is still there, and with it, the 'expected loss' of athleticism, but I still think his moulded game is that of a forward. I think he copes fairly well with his already, relatively hefty frame (at least for a boy his size). His size might be a factor, but not one I expect to have a significant say as to where he can or cannot play.

His game is still moulded around that of a true key forward, and I expect that will be where he'll be most comfortable as he makes the transition.

Mmmm , not having seen the kid but going by the contributions from experience observers like that of Gee and Mojo, Id say he sounds like our missing link. A tall power forward thats capable of rucking that is probably worthy of a top10 pick or at minimum a Round 1.

To me he sounds like a Mathew Richardson type player. Say what you like about Richo but he is probably one of the few players who can make you watch an ordinary game of footy. He is a one stop, high leaping,Russian roulette kicking, excitment machine inan era of mass produced footballers
If young Tom has his sort leap with the frame and the kicking fortold, them ....whoooo are we in for some value for money games.

Mojo , As Ive said before the Cats have been a bit stiff in some ways. The way the cards have fallen, the picks and players available when we had a couple of years with top10 picks , not once was there a player like Mitch Clarke available when it was our turn.
While siff in some ways but as you have pointed out lucky with the FS in others. We may have a FullBack , a Centre Half Forword,a Full Forward, a Ruck and a quality on baller from FS. Yep , just keep those FS keep rollin in.

Hopefully in a couple of years Ottens will be the poor man's Hawkins.
