Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

He seems a different player in the wet. Just need him to smash open another final and we will have a good player!

True. The wet usually tends to bring the big blokes undone but seems to motivate Tom to throw his weight and size around like he should. Useful game but will not get carried away with it yet. Great to see him communicating/co existing so well with J Pod and resting West/Ottens up forward.

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

He did not hurt his foot playing ruck, he was taking a contested mark in the forward line like forwards are supposed to when he landed awkwardly and hurt his foot - the original rucking experiment worked for Hawk and brought him into some form.

You have to ask yourself though, did that extra workload around the ground exacerbate the foot soreness to the point where that one marking contest was the straw that broke the camel's back?

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

It's beginning to look that way to me.

The mugs on the main board and in the Bay can crow til the cows come home about what a spud he is, he was only on Schoenmakers etc. Of course he was so influential last night that they had to put Gibson on him, who proceeded to make a fair impression of a rag doll in the goalsquare. This in turn opened things up for Pods to get in on the action. Having two genuinely dangerous forwards is pretty exciting for us and makes the opposition have to really think about how to work their matchups.

Of course, he has to keep putting it together, but ever since the game against Brisbane when he clutched some strong marks he's been quite consistent, and playing with increasing confidence.

Re: Hawkins - using his hands to mark

Really pleased with the way he imposed himself on the game especially early on. It was his lift in assertiveness and not wavering in his concentration that struck me. It's amazing what a little self belief can do.

Apart from those key things the little cameo I loved was the clean gather in the square, a little feint to the left, a spin to the right, onto the left boot – goal.

Many of us here have offered reasoned criticism of him in the past. However, there are quite few who have done nothing more than slag him with cheap one liners. Noticeably none of the cheap shot merchants have appeared here. Little wonder! Special mention to Poida.

Though many haven't seen it Hawk has been improving week-by-week. Still has a way to go and one swallow does not a summer make as they say. But the signs are encouraging. Go Hawk!

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

As much as anything I think its Tom just maturing and coming to terms with what's required. How long did it take Lonergan to become a regular contributor.

Let me be Devil's advocate. He played close to his best last night BUT who did he beat. Hawthorns backline is not the best in the league. Certainly his marking has improved over recent weeks , his marks on the lead overhead are super impressive. His setshots aside , he is getting to more contests and gradually getting a better feel for it.

Hawthorn would be worried about this. Between Hawk,Pods Ottens and West we have to much marking power. If the grabs stick it their is potential for it to be a blow out if we continue to clear the ball. This time they targeted Selwood , next time it might be Ottens.

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

Amazing what happens when you give him a few consecutive games in the forward line.

Judging by how many times this has been replied to you obviously have hit the nail on the head with this one. How could they expect him to develop into a key forward, when you dont play him as a key forward?

But yeah he was very good last night, partciularly early when we needed him.

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

hopefully he keeps on playing that way, very good player.

Regarding the OP, 'one swallow does not a summer make', but a big performance against a tough team in a final won't hurt his confidence much! Here's hope the OP is right and Hawkins will realise the potential we all see in him!
that landing injury was the icing on the cake, the final macrotrauma aggravating previous repetitive microtrauma, ie a stress injury recurrence, and the ruckwork was the catalyst.

Anyway, he is fit and hungry and as I 've thought previously, he will be our MVP soonish, no doubt. If he's on , could be lethal. Hopefully 2 more games from him this year to further enhance his confidence. Not trying to sound outrageous, but I seriously believe Tom will be the gun we hoped for

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

He has the potential to be a gun, as was shown when his career first started out.

If he keeps up this form and using his size and strength to his advantage as well as going hard into each and every contest, he will become one of our most influential players.

Go Tommy!

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

He has been helped by the side playing more direct. The high possession game did not suit big forwards but this thrilling new approach is made for the power forward.

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

And to think that Caroline Wilson suggested on footy classified some weeks ago that he could end up at Melbourne in a trade.

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

Has definately been improving in the last few weeks.

I am still somewhat unsure about what Tom will become for us.

He maybe a late bloomer like Lonergan - just slowly got better to the point where he has become a regular member of the first 22.

However I just cannot build a case just yet on his history - as I like to base it on a player consistently performing for a season before you can really start to expect or have any real confidence in seeing consistent form from them.

Hawk is yet to do that - he has yet to have one good overall season. Either form or injury have not allowed this outcome to eventuate.

It goes really without saying - with imminent retirements and who is coming thru - we need Hawkins to play more consistently for us to remain a powerhouse club.

But certainly a case can be made he is looking like a player who can play their role in this final series. So far so good. He does not need to dominate a game - just needs to contest strongly, chase, tackle and kick 2 goals - he has done his role well enough for me. Without Menzel may need to kick another goal or two.

Amazing what happens when you give him a few consecutive games in the forward line.

Not just that. The last two weeks have been all about banging into forward fifty at every opportunity.

Must give him a boost to hear the coach telling the midfielders to bang it in fast and deep.

He was very good in 2009 particularly in the preliminary
(nearly won the plasma from Wallsy) so I wouldn't say he's turned the corner but I'm rapt for him right now.

Re: Has Hawkins turned the corner?

I have been a bit amazed by the plaudit Tom has been on the end of post this game.

He was very good but we must all remember he didn't beat someone like Scarlett or Glass or Tarrant. He is moving in the right direction but still has a bit to go.

Yes, but i think the encouraging thing was that he comprehensively beat opponents that he should. He hasn't done that in convincing style for a long time. He just looked like he was confident and ready to contribute. He will have to back that up and consistently, however all the signs over the last month have been extremely positive and i like the fact that he has now commanded his position.

I'm confident that we will see the best of Tommy Hawkins over the next few weeks!

Just pray then that what he is gaining is the confidence and the belief that he can at least put a good crack in when it comes to facing better opponents and not being a pussy and whimping out of the contest..

You keep banging on about this SJ.

Although I agree with the sentiment I think you are over playing the area of the ground he was on to perform this way. Are you trying to say he's played 50 games in the ruck?

Oh, note from SJ to the match committee.
Please play Bartel in the middle and stop playing SJ up the ground.
